I got one of these last year. I’ve always wanted them despite the general hatred of them but they were always too expensive. But now the price has come down so much that you can easily pick on up for around the $300 range. I spent another $300 or so maxing everything out and it’s a fantastic machine! I use it as my daily computer. So perfectly capable of most day to day tasks and more. And it just looks cool.

@@karimelbahloul3854i have traded my M1 Mac Mini base config for almost top of the line 2013 Mac Pro. I own also M1 Macbook Air so having two almost identical M1 systems was redundant for me. Saying that the M1 Mini performancewise could run circles around the "Trashcan" but man it is so much more fun and looks like a pice of art compared to the boring Mac Mini. If you are on a budget and you need performance go for that M1 Mac Mini, if you like to tinker and don't mind occasional frustrations go for the "Trashcan"

I”m still using one of these as a web dev box. Will likely hold on to it for at least another year and see what the M3 max studio is like. If anyone is thinking of buying one of these then my recommendation would be get one with D700s in it and don’t worry about the rest of the spec. Then upgrade it as follows 8 or 10 core CPU - the 12 is too slow at single core. 64Gb ram, it can go to 128gb, but only with slower memory The SSD can be upgraded to a later Apple version that was used in some MacBooks. You can also get an adaptor to you an M.2 SSD for even better speeds. Just make sure you get one with D700 GPUs, as upgrades are unobtainable.
@inwedavid6919
@inwedavid6919 Жыл бұрын
The D700 is also the one with highest failure rate due to heat, and note that Mac OS use only one D700 at a time while the same mac under windows can use both at the same time and deliver more performances. Before M series I knew and was a mac user under windows, and not using crapy bootcamp drivers it was a perfect world faster tham mac os and better design than most PC. And I was far to be alone on it.

I love my Mac Pro. I maxed it out. When I bought it, it came with 128 gigs of ram. That dropped the speeds from the native 1866 to 1033. So I switched it to 64 gigs. I use RAM disk to do my video editing, rendering and converting. I get close to original video time when done rendering. Very satisfied with this beast. I know when I eventually buy Final Cut Pro the performance will be even greater

I run my recording studio with my Mac Pro 2013 12-Core 64GB ram with 500GB SSD and it runs fast and is great at working with heavy music production tasks. I had bought a Macbook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and it was lightning fast but because of stability reasons (Avid Pro Tools program) I had to go back to the 2013 Mac Pro. Since I’m running a business, stability and reliability is everything, hence why I had to go back but it was so worth it. I love my Mac Pro 2013. Did you notice your machine is not showing time and other icons such as control center in the upper right corner area, i.e. at 11:47 and 13:00 in your video? Is it always like that? The reason I'm asking is because I recently got one Mac Pro and it's doing the same thing which is a bit strange. It works fine when not showing those info. However, if I restart it over and over manually, I could occasionally get it to show those info. But it wouldn't last more than a minute or so before it froze and restarted itself. Not sure if you ever experienced this with your machine?

I might have found a used mini for my budget of $350, but it would have been hard. I did have one disapointment. I thought I would use it to run old copies of Adobe PS and Illustrator. But, I found that they only run Adobe cloud rental programs. I switched to Affinity for both.

To look cool and run quiet, they put the slow fan in the middle. To appeal to pros, they provided for quite a bit of circuitry in a small case. To make a market disaster, the fan could not keep up when all of the chips were going flat out for hours... exactly what a pro would want to use it for, doing pro stuff like video editing. Nice smooth easy to follow video and narration. I could watch someone unscrew components all day, as long as I'm not responsible! The 80's synthpop tunes in the background were a perfect choice. Did you just put spaces for the new password? How exactly do you clear it? If the Mission Impossible team could distract someone for ten minutes, they could reset the password! I'm not happy to see you, that's an RPi in my pocket. And put it back with improved thermal paste so that the bad guys think it runs better than ever... What's the going price for these with everything turning on okay?

It make sense as to why they didn’t hold their value. They were built to be thrown in the trash. I have a Mac Pro 2009 and it runs like a top. Is it the fastest machine out there? No, it comes somewhere in the middle of all the newest machines fro Apple. The price for that machine would cost around $4,000 but mine only cost me around $600 upgraded. So it’s obvious why older “cheese graders” Mac Pro are liked so much today. So we come to this 2013 trash can Mac Pro. It’s limited by the inability to upgrade the OS. In your case, you had to use a Pie machine to hack the software to upgrade the OS. For most people, this is just a bridge too far and that is the reason why they are selling for a few hundred dollars. It also dictates where Mac is going to miss the mark. With the M1, M2, M3 machines designed to never be opened (or upgraded). It seems Apple wants to control your needs by charging you every time you figure out you need more computer. It might be the end of the road for older Mac Pro trash cans and above. So where does this leave Mac OS lovers? Basically Sonoma is it for Mac Pro 5,1 or 6,. The main problem right now is that the latest OS doesn’t recognize the mouse our keyboard. Hardware wise, with a little bit of work, you can turn a PC into a Sonoma Mac machine. With DosDude or someone else,you can keep upgradable Macs going just not a Mac. I am sure the newest OS’s (once figured out) will take the latest and greatest Mac OS’s but maybe a few years behind.

The 10 year old Mac Pro is slower than the base model Mac Mini, that is unsurprising. I wonder how fast of a CPU you could put in one of these Mac Pros though. Maybe with a newer Intel chip and updated graphics cards the scores would be closer. But it is already over unfortunately. It is not worth doing that as OS X for intel has been discontinued.

I do but a couple things…. 1. Reading the title, I wouldn’t expect you to flash firmware and do a complete tear down for 75% of the video. 2. A fair comparison would be against an Intel Mac mini. Regardless, I think a 2013 Mac Pro is still worth replacing my 2011 Mac Mini Duo Core. Thanks though!

Don‘t you think the title is misleading? The video shows for 12 minutes how you order, unpack and disassemble the Mac and 1 minute about the performance 🤷‍♂️

I think no. The video was not about just comparison, it was more about if the mac is still a good tech to use from perspective of support, design, possible performance.

I am surprised to know that a mac mini is much powerful than a 2013 mac pro, sometimes more than twice powerful. Currently the m1 mac is cheap(especially used ones), also it cost much less power, so you will save from electricity bills. I think 2013 mac pro is not worth to buy nowadays.

Today, in October of 2023, a brand new Mac Pro will cost about $9000 USD, and it cannot even accept a PCI-Express video card! And it also *cannot* *accept* an external GPU box over Thunderbolt. $9000, and the customer has to make due with the weak gpu that is built into the M2 Ultra processor. NVidia or AMD video cards are light-years faster than what come with the M2 Mac Pro.

@@mortenthorpe Apparently Steve Jobs disliked slots and wanted to move the world to "virtual slots." Since then putting RAM, GPU, and SSD on-chip have even done away with expansion on the motherboard. It seems this is the reason for the absence of a new Mac Pro... if you can only add to those with a different system-on-chip, what purpose remains for any slots? I'm curious if M3 will bring back enough pci lanes or whatever would be needed for meaningful upgrades that don't require picking a different chip at time of initial purchase.
@mortenthorpe
@mortenthorpe Жыл бұрын
@@editingsecrets wanting to move the world in a direction, clearly at odds with the current situation in the real world, does not make sense at all times. wishful thinking is decoupled from reality… point in case… electric vehicles and the argument for them, as replacing gasoline vehicles… the environmental benefits of them is highly exaggerated, while the negative impacts are underrated… electric vehicles pollute as much in their own product lifecycle, as any other vehicle… it’s just pollution of a different sort, at the moment and their immediate location of use.
