Just dropping by to say a massive thank you. I'm overwhelmed and very flattered by all of these lovely comments. About the Mac Pro. There are loads of absolutely fantastic points in this thread, so many that I could easily make another video of a very similar runtime about those points alone! My plan is to try and put together a Part 2 to this, trying out some things that people have suggested, and covering in detail some more of the points listed here, especially regarding the Mac Studio, a machine that I forgot about entirely when making this video. On a more general note, I'm delighted that after all this time, people are still enjoying this content. I know things have changed a lot on KZbin, so to see so much love for this style is very refreshing and means a great deal to me. Thank you everyone. As always there's no shortage of ideas in my head, it's just about time and life. I'll never ever 'leave KZbin' or anything crazy like that, it's just sometimes it may take me a little longer than other times. I'll always be here though! I can't respond to every comment, but thank you for the love and I hope you're all doing great too.

So good to see this online. As you know I have not been too well and I forgot you had acquired this from me. As far as my records show, it came from Apple who upgraded me from the base specification to this, replacing my faulty 2013 Mac Pro. They had none of the original one I ordered in stock, so I agreed to this. The D700 GPU turned out to be a great choice, as they performed great for video editing. It came with 2x 8GB memory modules inside and I upgraded with the Crucial Memory straight away. Lucky I did that upgrade, as the pre-installed memory had developed a fault, so never made their way back into the machine. I hope you really enjoy it Tom :D

I picked up a 2013 Mac Pro at the start of the pandemic just to have a desktop Mac and it honestly blew me away with how fast and responsive it was. It may sound a bit weird but I think it's one of the computers I've loved the most despite (or perhaps because of) its flaws.

Please tell explicitly what are the flaws of this unit ? i'm hesitating between a Mac Pro 2013 and an Imac2017 to produce music with Logic Pro. Do you have an idea which one would be the best ?
@jani0077 Жыл бұрын
@@lambertlambert7076 as an owner of this model, the ones with the mid- and high-end graphics units (the D500 and D700 ones) tend to overheat and in the end fail because of bad thermal management, so buy one with the D300s in it. I have this on a proprietary stand to cool the unit even further and clean its internals regularly so that no overheating occurs. Besides these i'm not aware of any other issues (and buy a lot of TB2 to TB3 dongles, it's just wasteful to not use the 6 TB2 ports).

@@jani0077 Yes I do agree. It's not acceptable that SSD or RAM are soldered to prevent any upgrade or simply a replacement for repair. Thanks for the video. Just purchased a 2013 Mac Pro via eBay. Been watching prices for these for a while now...and big price drops seem to have stopped. Older 2010-2012 Mac Pro's still sell for a decent price (expandability)...which I think is keeping the price of the 2013 Mac Pro higher. 2013 Mac Pro going to be a partially a day-to-day computer...and partially an item for my collection. Since the video had some M1 Mac-Mini vs. 2013 Mac Pro benchmarks...one thing I think I was expecting (and was missing from the video)...was the gaming performance of the M1 Mac-Mini (just for comparison to what the 2013 Mac Pro did with the game you tested). Yes the game would most likely run via Rosetta 2 on the M1 Mac Mini...but still would have been interesting to see. Thanks again for the vid.

Awesome to see a video from you every once in a while remembering the 'good old times' when we were all nerding out on PowerPC Macs! I see the 2013 Mac Pro as a very important Mac in Apple's history. It failed miserably and I think it was ahead of its time. How much better it would have been with Thunderbold 3 or 4! And in the end I think Apple themselves learned a lot from that machine. The problem was, there wasn't really a possibility to seriously upgrade it over time because of heat envelopes. I am pretty sure, that if the redesign wouldn't have happened, we also probably wouldn't have gotten the Mac Studio, which is probably the greatest desktop Mac of all times in my opinion besides the Mac mini, which is back to good since the M2 Pro exists. The old times of big tower Macs for everybody, who is a bit of an enthusiast, are gone and in my opinion also not really needed anymore today.

Thanks for this! Great video! I just bought a "trashcan" Mac on eBay so like most nerds I am watching lots of videos about it as I wait for it to arrive. I bought it for a pretty simple reason. I work remotely and use remote desktop to control my cloud based Windows PC for work so I do not need anything super powerful but I also like to use a triple monitor setup, two for my work machine and one for podcasts, music, videos etc. I currently do this with a Ryzen based Windows PC but I discovered while travelling and using an old Mac Mini how convenient it is to use iMessage and Facetime on the host machine while I worked. The problem is the Mac mini only supports 2 monitors without resorting to janky or expensive usb to hdmi adapters. Major first world problems! I bought the Mac for $240 usd. It is the mid tier model with the 6 core processor and D500 graphics but has been upgraded to 64 GB of RAM. I feel like I got a pretty good deal. Most are going for more like $275-$300. If it doesn't work out as my daily driver, I might use it as a Plex server.

Have to say its my favourite computer of all time (my first was a Spectrum 128K +2 back in 1988) and it really is a hidden gem if, ironically, you're not too much of a Pro user. If I upgrade now it'd have to be a Studio to make it a worthwhile investment. Really great to see you back Tom!

I just landed a 2013. Love the design. I'll line it up with every other Apple over-designed failure. The 20th Anniversary Mac (TAM), the G4 Cube, and now the 2013 Mac Pro. Come to think of it, my new 2013 Mac Pro looks suspiciously like the speaker on the TAM. Perhaps this has been answered already, but regarding your RAM question at 13:20. The ECC RAM used on the Mac Pro, if it is 4 or 8 GB modules, is UDIMM, or un(buffered/registered) dual inline memory modules. At 16GB or larger, all the modules are RDIMM, or registered memory. While the 2013 Mac Pro can use either type, they cannot be mixed. All of one type or the other. Except for any special order 64GB orders, Apple would have shipped all of their systems with either 4 or 8 GB UDIMMs. That machine probably shipped with either 12 or 16 GB of RAM, which would have been three or four 4GB modules, respectively. When somebody upgraded to that Micron RAM, they couldn't run those 16GB modules with the original Apple RAM, and that is why it is absent from the other two slots.

I always thought these were such cool lil machines! I always wanted any mac pro (could never afford one). As a fun project (especially as I'm a weird linux user), I'd love to see you dink about with a linux install on the machine. I've no idea how well it supports the 2013 and it's weird GPU/Thunderbolt arrangement (though I imagine the support is pretty solid now). Also it's great to see you back, Tom! It's been ages! I went on a bit of a binge of the "old school" content a while ago whilst remincing about the "old youtube" as such. It's great to still see people like you making casual vlog style things.

Funny thing. I got a 2013 Mac Pro in April of 2022. Little cosmic coincidence of sorts, as that appears to be less than a month after you got yours. I prefer to call it a stovepipe, though, as it blasts heat out the top and it's a nicer name than trashcan. It isn't good for a whole lot in this day and age, but I settled on using Mac OS 10.14 on it so that it could run 32-bit Intel apps while also managing modern tasks. I don't use it much, but it's a neat little thing to have around.

Hey, Tom! I wanted to wait until I had time to watch the entire video before I commented. It's awesome to see you take a look at one of these! (I'd seen the social media post about it a while back and was wondering what kind of paces you'd be putting it through.) One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention or compare was the Mac Studio (I've seen a couple of other comments about this.) When it was being announced, and the Mac Pro was still on Intel, it reminded me of the 2013 Mac Pro's announcement. Now that we have the Apple Silicon Mac Pro, we know it's basically just the Mac Studio's hardware with PCIe slots-- or, put the opposite way, the Mac Studio is just a Mac Pro without PCIe slots. Apple clearly still thinks there's a market of pro (or semi-pro) users who can use the best-available CPU/GPU performance in a small package and can make do with only external expandability. Furthermore, the Mac Studio has been generally well-received! Personally, I think the Mac Pro 2013 was somewhat ahead of its time in that regard, which you mentioned with studios typically having more external dongles and things as an alternative to PCIe cards now. You also touched on the G4 Cube not taking the PowerMac towers away as options, and similarly, the Mac Studio didn't take the Mac Pro away as an option (although it appeared to be a potential replacement between when it was announced and when the Apple Silicon Mac Pro followed.) I made a video coming out "in support" of the Mac Pro 2013 when it was announced, and it's funny to look back on that after all these years knowing that Apple's vision for it didn't fully pan out, but that it still influenced future products in a way. I've been watching your channel for many years (we had a brief email correspondence way back in January 2014, when I almost got a Skype call with you after being the subject of some harassment in your Ustream chat, although I think you were pretty busy, since you ended up going quiet.) Your channel's still a huge inspiration for mine, largely in terms of your exploratory spirit towards tech and your unashamedly long-form format. I'd checked your socials a few times over the last few years, and even just a few days before you uploaded this video; I basically expected we wouldn't hear from you again, as I've got many other channels in my subscription list from "older days of KZbin" that have effectively ended. Really cool that you're still around, and thanks for making some time to share this with us after all. (I don't have any particular ideas of things to do on the Mac Pro-- it's clearly still very capable, so it wouldn't be much of a "challenge" to use it for most tasks-- but I'll look forward to any follow-ups regardless! Perhaps you can think about use-cases that aren't computationally demanding but would still require some creativity to pull off with that form factor.)

You said about a setup tour ; maybe you should do a room tour instead. You said about comparing apple to Oranges. what about Apples to apples and compare it to the previous Intel cheese greater Mac or even better a G5. that would be Apples to maybe Pears. Or maybe a server? It's just great to see you back. just did what all others have done and checked the prices for the Mac Pro. What was funny before narrowing down by year I got 666 results. Good to see some love shown for the much derided Cylindrical Mac Pro. I purchased my first maxed out machine in 2014 it has worked seamlessly on a daily basis ever since without issues. I still believe had Apple not made it a replacement for the old cheese grater pro machine it would have had a lot less criticism. The design still looks futuristic 10 years after it's launch .It would appear Apple has lost interest in their pro consumers by playing is safe and rehashing the design of the recent upgraded Silicon machine which is a real shame as some prefer stand alone desktops .

Obviously family and other personal life things are more important than KZbin, but it’s nice to see ya on the platform again! In regards to the Mac Pro, I’ve always wanted to get one myself. With the prices they’re at now, they’re not the *worst* deals anymore. It wouldn’t surprise me if I got one if it became a daily driver Mac. With them being unsupported though, it does make me wonder how well they’d run Ventura, since they can be patched to run it. 🤔
