So after more testing, I heave realized the problem is not really icloud in particular, but the FILES app. Even when moving files to my ssd, the files app will slowly grow in size until your ipad is suddenly maxed out. TLDR: You MUST back up regularly in small amounts or else it will take an eternity of troubleshooting to back up your entire library of work.

I had to learn the hardway that 64 gb was not enough. I bought a flash drive to back up my work and on the same day, my ipad stopped working. I had to restore it and luckily I had backed up my work already. problem was I backed it up 5 months prior. I lost 5 months of art, which luckily was during the time I had an art block, and I can't even remember exactly what I lost. If you plan on buying a 64 gb ipad, be aware that procreate eats up a freakish amount of space and an external storage is pretty much required just like the pencil is unless you're a risk taker.

I appreciate the question. Honestly the question is always no simply due to the sheer amount of work people can produce. Backing up all files is helpful but that can quickly become tedious over time. FYI on formatting drives: FAT32 or exFAT are almost universally supported and can be done on any platform that can format drives. I use them on all external hard drives so that they are easy to use on windows, mac, and linux. No need to buy a mac just to format hard drives. FAT32 has a max file size of 2GB and requires partitions on hard drives with 2TB or more. exFAT is newer but struggles with lots (as in thousands or tens of thousands) of really small files and isn't as easy to use on older computers.

For any artist that sees this it don’t matter if you don’t have the fanciest drawing programs, drawing tablets, supplies, and even where you at in your art journey to become the best artist it known of those things matter you can make art out of anything and you can make pretty art out of the things you have I recommend using the things you have already and once in a while treat yourself by getting some new supplies that aren’t breaking the bank the most beautiful thing of art anything can be art and art doesn’t have any rules or limits art just requires you to use your imagination and being creative I mean it does help to learn the basics of art to understand it better but at the end of the day what matters is that your passionate and happy to make art and do art so artist lets draw our hearts out

Even if there is truth to the rose tinted glasses idea of "good art can be made from anything/the tools dont matter" etc etc Its only relative to the person themselves/their own experiences. Personally, i want to make higher levels of quality for my digital art, but because my laptop is very old and doesnt have the specs to handle digital art properly, 3 out of 5 times i press ctrl+s to save, my drawing program crashes, so i lose about 30 mins of work time, making me less motivated to even make digital art at all. I used to make digital art on my phone as well, but my phone is also old and running on less than 1gb storage, so the drawings also lag and crash as well. There will be times that the only way to improve the quality of your creation process is to upgrade, and that means shelling out money plain n simple.

I have an iPad for school work and art- this is my solution and maybe one for you? I have Google photos on my phone so whenever I finish an art piece COMPLETELY- I send to myself and save it onto my photo album on my phone and since Google photos saves space (it deletes from phone and automatically backup on app) For me it’s really easy to manage storage with Google photos and gmail :) THEN delete it on procreate when you’re ready I hope I helped someone✨

For hard drives (if I'm not mistaken) exFAT is compatible for PC/Windows and iOS/Mac. My iPad hasn't come in yet but for my time so far with using both systems in the past, that's where I've had most compatibility with. I also recommend cleaning out your cache often (esp. if it doesn't interfere with your user settings/customizations. Also also, a lot of cloud software can be good, but be mindful of the preservation of file/image quality (Google Photos is currently having this issue). Happy arting!

I'm a dropbox user myself. My main computer runs Windowss, so Dropbox has the best interface to manage files between my PC, Androids and iPad. I noticed something, though... If you drag and drop files from Procreate to your Dropbox folder in the files app, the file will export as a .procreate or .psd If you drag and drop into the actual Dropbox app, the file will convert to a jpg or png.

Thank you so much for this video. I’m researching whether to get the 64 or 256GB Air and I’ve seen so many blog posts from digital artists I respect that claim 32GB is totally enough space for a hobby artist. NONE of them discussed the double-save of the icloud, and it’s something that really frustrated me about my previous iPhone and photo storage, so much so that I just bought the 12 when it was available since it had so much more space than my previous phone. I mean, I couldn’t even get Spotify to work after a while, so I had to choose between tunes and pics of my sweet pup. 🥺 Spotify lost, obvi. So thanks for covering just how detrimental that can be to your workflow. We shouldn’t have to actually delete the files app itself, that’s a serious UX issue that Apple should’ve fixed by now. 😒

tbh i never recommend artists with 64gb (especially how ipad can eat up the "other" space) unless they already have either icloud or google drive...but definitely perfect spot more-less is 128gb/256gb...had my 2018 ipad pro in 256gb since july 2019 & its been such fantastic device. i also have samsung T5 ssd in 500gb for backup my older art...currently i have around 223gb space so i definitely recommend getting 128/256...

Hi Josh, thanks for this video. You likely saved me from a massive error! Blows my mind that Apple don't offer ther iPad in a standard 128GB format. I'm looking at the iPad Air, as it's largely the same as the Pro now unless I'm missing something. The upgrade to the 256GB version is approx £150 which is a big chunk of cash. It sounds however that 64GB really isn't going to be enough without some major headaches.

Hi, you don't need mac to format your external ssd into native mac file format. You can do it from Windows. It's a matter of installing free VMware player software and downloading macos installation iso and setting up virtual machine. Then run macos system inside windows, plugin external drive and format is as you like. There are plenty of tuts how to set it up over youtube.

I use an iPad 9 64GB to work with illustration and comics. What I find limiting are the Procreate layers. But in my region the iPad Pro is expensive, and the used market in Brazil is also a fortune. The price of an iPad Pro you can buy a motorcycle or an old used car lol. I had my eye on the iPad Air 5 for having a better processor and being more "affordable" but the 256 GB version is quite expensive. I thought about using it with an ssd and use the 64GB one. But my idea is to stay with the device for a long time. I think it is better to continue with my ipad 9 :/

@@valentina2375 nope. With me don’t crash. The limitations of procreate are made precisely so that it doesn't have problems with files that it cannot process. It has been slow with a large brush textures. But it never closed. In A4 format, there are 26 layers, and you can easily work with them. I started my journey with an iPad 7, switched to a 9, and now for work I use the PC more because of 3D and because it would be cheaper to buy a display+ upgrade the PC than to get an iPad Air or Pro where I live. But if you need it for larger sizes, I would recommend you get the M1.

Thanks for your video. I'm still very confused (confess I am an Android user at heart which doesn't come with yehse storage issues) I got an IPad Air 4 64GB and just use it for Procreate. I did download about 27GB worth of items which I presumed was stored on iCloud, with my paid subscription. Last night to my shock I saw my iPad was on 58GB used. I copied all my iCloud files to an external harddrive and then deleted them from files. Which now means I have no files in iCloud either. Is this what you mean about backup up your files and deleting the Files folder? My question is, why bother paying for iCloud then if it still ads all that space on your device? Surely it should remain on iCloud when I delete the files from the FILES folder? There are some templates I would like to have access on the device but keeping in iCloud so it doesn't use space but it doesn't seem to work like that on my side? Is there something I am doing wrong? Please help 🙏🏻 PS. I also see the amount of storage available on iCloud on the iPad doesn't correspond with that if you login on a browser. Currently I should have full capacity available but says I only have 32GB on ipad and 34GB on browser. What is taking up the other space that I can't see?

i would turn "never go into sleep mode" in the settings on. it just leaves the screen on unless you turn it off urself

One big problem with external storage is that ios doesn't allow you to properly eject an external drive. Android does--you go to storage, advanced, click on your external drive, and you get the option to eject drive. I suspect some of the file corruption that occurs when using external drives with ios originates in this issue.

@@viavante4654 I think both MS and Apple have issues. I like MS, but I'm all Apple now, with an iPad Mini, an iPhone and a Macbook Air. I think 64 gigs will do you nicely. I load my iPad up with art apps, with kindle books and with music, along with projects I'm working on, so 64 gigs would be a bit of a squeeze. My wife has been all Apple for many years, and I've been impressed with the durability of Apple devices. Her iPad mini works hard all day every day, from kitchen recipe duty to streaming to facebook with her friends. She has 256 gigs, largely because she wouldn't be doing memory management on it--I would. She likes things to just work without any fuss; anything that has to be done is my responsibility.

I regret getting the 64GB iPad Pro... I should have gotten at least 128GB, so ugh... Also the corruption thing with the storage is so annoying, I bought a 32GB USB-C flash drive specifically for the iPad to avoid saturating it too much, and then I discovered it corrupts/interrupts file backup all the time, basically everytime I unplug it it corrupts everything on it, it's so damn frustrating and I started using MEGA to backup my files, since I can't use iCloud to backup files since iPad backup already takes most of it and I don't want to spend on monthly suscriptions, that's what I hate about Apple tbh. For someone that doesn't own a Mac I'll have to find someone that can format that drive for me to be able to use it, what a pain, but hey beside those hassles I really enjoy Procreate, I just wish Apple was less restrictive and more consumer friendly.

I can not believe that the file upload download thing is a real issue on a super high-tech, several hundred dollar expensive device by one of the leading manufactureres... that's shocking. EDIT: So does this mean, you have the files twice on the ipad?

Unfortunately, thats just how iCloud works. Its not really clear but its not really a backup solution, its a syncing system that tries to get all of your documents available on all of your devices.

@@ergojosh That's crazy but very good to know beforehand. What didn't understand completly is, do you have those files two times on your device after? Like, when you delete the files app does that get rid of the doublicate or is it completly gone from the ipad and only in the icloud after?

I have a windows pc and external hard disk with 2 teras, formatted ex fat, I ordered tablet with 128 gb, I would like to use it to draw, and use other apps, use it often instead of the pc that has been working badly for months. (either this or air but, to draw and film I was attracted to a lot of the larger screen, I thought less about space, I had more doubts on the screen of the 2 pros.) on the space, I don't know, if it's little, I hope hard disk helps, I can directly save here from procreate, once a week, 2 weeks .. I did not understand how to eject hard disk, I detach the cable directly, there is, key, safe removal, this can cause you to lose data or corrupt them?

Its okay, just remember to back up your files occasionally so your ipad doesn't get full. Google Drive and Dropbox are recommended because those 2 don't do iCloud's duplication glitch

thank you for this info. i was planning to buy an ipad air but your insights made me choose s6 lite instead. im already a samsung user and windows user, seeing how messed up the filing system is for apple and not to mention the transfer process.. imma just pass apple as useless unless magically all the devices i have at home were apple devices

@@viavante4654 yeah, if u are planning to do commissions do go for procreate. if you draw for fun and prioritises note taking for sure tab s6 lite also I'm an a I'd use of s6 lite now for few months :)
