I ordered one a few days ago in cherry red. I already have a G310 (among others) back at home that I was given in 1998. Looking forward to playing it. I am not a beginner but I think Epiphone SGs are among the best guitars in terms of value for money.

@@Electric.Flamingo I will be honing my chops on her for the foreseeable future. In the summer, I might buy an Epi SG Classic Worn Cherry with P90 pickups. I showed her to the guitarist of the house band last Friday pub night, and he christened her by playing Anastasia. @@richardmartinez1628 because unless you're going very high end (ex: 3000 dollar Les Paul or 4000 dollar PRS) a cheap decent import guitar that is upgraded with good parts can often be better than a lot of 1500 or 2000 dollar guitars.

Picked one up 2 days ago. Granted, still in the honeymoon phase, but so far I love it. Yes, there were cost cutting measures. Don’t care. It’s a cheap guitar. It stays in tune (so far). It is lighter than I thought a solid body could be. The frets were better than many guitars for 5x the price, but don’t care, I bought it for slide. The pickups aren’t my thing necessarily, but I bought it for distorted slide, and they work great for that. For $200 (or negative $20 on a trade in) what’s not to love? My parents bought me this as my first guitar back in 2013, the Guitar Center in Fairfax VA sold it to my parents even though the neck joint was fucked up. I saw the guy try to screw the neck joint back together, but I thought it was just a calibration. We went back to my country and I only realized then that the actual wood in the neck joint had broken. I put in some elbow grease, wood filler, a few screw plugs and a little piece of a library card to give it the correct neck angle; learned how to calibrate it on youtube videos and has been an amazing guitar ever since. Extremely stable tuning, I think I would tune it just a few times after putting on new strings and then about once a month. Very acoustically resonant guitar, something that surprised me but that apparently is a characteristic of SG guitars. The fretwork was flawless from factory (rare) but there were obvious flaws in the way it was painted and finished. I see that the new ones coming out don't have those flaws but there are complaints of the fretwork being half-assed. The tuning heads were fine on my guitar but most other Special VE's were a nightmare. I definitely recommend this guitar for anyone looking for a beater/sleeper guitar they can modify and manipulate without affecting the resale value (which is close to $0, I wouldn't buy any one of these guitars second hand).

I have one in the cherry satin finish. The body is poplar. I upgraded it because I think the stock tuners are terrible. I find them flimsy and don't stay in tune and I also heard other people say they have a tendency to break easy. I think Gibson was just trying to crank these budget Sgs out of the factory asap and that's probably why specs like the tuners aren't great. I upgraded the tuners and put in Grover Rotomatics and i found that a big improvement and as well replaced the bridge pickup with a Seymour Duncan Pegasus.

I don't have any complaints for the cost. I had a Gibson SG and while yes the Gibson sounds 100 times better it was a 2000. Dollar guitar. But as things go we needed some cash and were able to do a sell/ trade so I got the cash I needed and I got a budget SG from Epiphone now. Do I miss the green goblin yes I do, but we have a roof over our heads and I have made some adjustments to the Epiphone to take it up a notch. It will never be the Gibson I had once upon a time, but for the cost and fairly inexpensive mods the Black Beauty is pretty close. Note: I did let the kids name them so we went all over the place there, easiest way to get them into guitars is let them name one😮😂. But this Epiphone is really good for a budget guitar, it is a good starter. Some people don't like the bolt on neck, I tend to like it as I have had a guitar neck break and if I didn't have a bolt on we would have been replacing the whole guitar vs the neck and head piece replacement parts.

You can get an SG Muse for not much more than this. I got the jet black metallic version for £249 last year and it's a great guitar. The Muse series come with some better tuning heads (don't get hung up on tuning heads, even the expensive Gibson ones drop out of tune regularly and any serious guitarist should always be tuning before playing/recording anyway), alnico classic pro humbuckers and gorgeous metallic finishes. Honest review, i like this. I am looking for a guitar that i would tune up strictly to open d tuning, using it mostly for blues slide playing. I already have better guitars, but i don't want to hesitate any of them for that thing, cause i am not that far into slide playing, so this is the one i am looking at. It would probaby be a walnut one. I am gonna set it to medium to high action, use it mainly for slide, so i don't care about fret buzz. Interesting, and i wonder if these pickups and tuners will be good enough for my taste. If not, i'll mod it later anyway, it'll be a learning process, so i think i am just gonna bought it at the end of that month. I like the price, it's something i can afford right now.

I’m used to playing Les Pauls and have really had problems liking the neck/body ”proportions” on SG. The neck fels so far away (due to body size and where the neck joint is). I noticed the SG VE doesn’t have the spacer/disctance between the neck and neck pickup,. So in theory it look like the fretboard is “closer” to the body than compared to other SG. Would you say that is noticeable when playing? Hope I managed to explain this in a way that makes sense.. 😊

We gotta be smart together and make smart decisions with our money. Something tells me companies capitalize on our “stupidity”. 199$ is more fair than 1960-70 whatever how old 5,000-20,000 guitar. Than again if you have the money you have the money.

would you recommend this or the ibanez gio for a beginner guitar?
@Electric.Flamingo
@Electric.Flamingo 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on what your preference is feel wise. If you want a really thin neck and 24 frets, I would go for the Ibanez. If you want a slight chunkier neck, go with the SG.

It's all good, we all start somewhere! So, there are different neck carves, different neck widths, different neck thicknesses, different fret sizes, all kinds of stuff. It's all really a comfort thing. If you have smaller hands, you may want to go with a thinner neck and vice versa. You may hear a thin neck described as "fast" really meaning it's easier to shred on. Me, I prefer thicker necks but I have bigger hands so it's more comfortable. I wouldn't think too much into it, honestly. The best thing you can do is get your hands on both and see what feels best to you!

@@Electric.Flamingo I see, other than the neck, are their any other differences between the two guitars? Does the guitar matter in terms of sound or is it the amp?
@Electric.Flamingo
@Electric.Flamingo 2 жыл бұрын
The pickups can make a difference, mainly in output, but the amp, more importantly, the speaking in the amp, makes the biggest difference in sound. Differences between the two guitars in question, body shape and neck obviously. The ibanez has 24 frets as opposed to 22 on the SG, so the scale length is different. The SG will have less string tension. The SG will probably be lighter than the Ibanez. You have two volumes and two tone knobs on the SG as opposed to the Ibanez, which may only have one of each. You may get a 5 way switch on the Ibanez vs a 3 way on the SG, so the Ibanez may have more tone options.

Great vid. Question...does this SG still have the dreaded neck dive even with the strap button on the neck plate??
@Electric.Flamingo

Not as bad, believe it or not. I think it offers a bit more counterbalance and the fact that the neck isn't super heavy to begin with, it's already pretty balanced.

A wide suede/leather strap will remedy it, but yes, all SGs have significant neck dive. It's even worse on the better ones because the bodies are thinner and lighter, but damn they are comfortable and great guitars to play!

Depends on the style of music you are wanting to play. If you're looking for a more classic rock sound/feel, I would say go with the SG. If you're wanting to do more metal/high gain stuff, I think the Ibanez might be better. Scale length will affect the feel as well, the SG will have a shorter scale length, making bends a little easier. The SG will probably have a fatter neck than the Ibanez as well, so I would figure out which neck shape you prefer as well.
