Yeah! I know I made this poor choice and suffered(1800$ is lot of money in my country), that's why i decided to buy ps4 when it launched. Since then I Bought a lot of games and still ps4+games doesn't cost me 1800$ in 2 years. Buying gaming laptop after 2014 is a stupid idea cause consoles of the same year can play any game at 1080p and med-high settings no matter what even if the game is launched in 2019, still graphics settings will remain the same.

The thing is Alienware before they were bought by Dell were a great company I had a friend that worked for them building systems here in the UK. Yes the hardware was overpriced however the hardware wasnt really what you were paying for they provided 24/7 tech support, free engineer visits, free upgrade programs. Every single Alienware pc and laptop came with a birth certificate and all the benchmarks from the burn in period in a ring binder it was an event getting an alienware. Nowdays its just a dell xps with a different badge and the magics gone.

If you end up not using that laptop for anything, I can point you in the necessary direction to repurpose that CPU (which should be socketed) into a mini-ITX desktop board. Pikslzplit, it all depends on if the cpu is of the socketed variety (not soldered like some laptops), and if there is an available motherboard that takes that socket. I've seen boards that'll work with 1st Gen core-i laptop CPUs, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, and even 4th gen. I run an i7-3610qm mini-ITX desktop system in my living room as a stream PC when I shoot in there (building, etc. Not gaming) but also as a retro emulator system and keep it on standby as my portable LAN party PC since it has a GTX 970 in it as well. I took the CPU out of a dead MSI gaming laptop, then sold the gaming laptop carcass for $200.

This was actually my first "gaming" system. A gift from a friend back in 2014 after he built his first pc. I loved it at the time (considering it was free) and used it for about a year and a half before building my first pc. After that I gifted it to my girlfriend, who used it until it finally bit the dust. It did the job and played everything I wanted (a few brand new titles at the time lagged pretty bad like Shadow Of Mordor). So if you end up with a free Alienware , its not too bad.

There is an error in the video. Sandy Bridge i7 (and some i5) CPU's are usually listed as supporting up to 8GB of 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM, but in many cases they can actually take up to 16GB 1600Mhz (and depending on the BIOS support low voltage DDR3L too). I've tested 16GB of DDR3L on a Sandy Bridge i5-2540M which was inside a Lenovo T420 and it works perfectly at 1.35v 1600Mhz, though I did have to change the BIOS for an older version to support the lower voltage. So don't be put off by a Sandy Bridge laptop stating it can only take 8GB max, there's a very good chance it can take far more!

I'm a fan of the i7-2630qm. It's still quite powerful for the cost used. My HP Elitebook 2560p has that same CPU in a 12.1" form factor, very strong mobile performance. The CPU is rated by Intel @ 45 watts, up from the 35 watts most Intel Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs are rated at. No surprise on the fan noise, mine sounds as loud when pushed. You should try to eGPU the i7-2630qm, you might be surprised at how much it can handle.

I'm glad someone made a video about the Alienware M14x, my college laptop. One of the last gifts from my father before he passed away. I still have it with every accesory, well kept. So many good memories.. Even in 2017 I used it with a 4K monitor for productivity. It is now my backup computer, dormant until needed. I just found an M17X. it has a i7 3740QM and a GTX675M with 16GB ram. I saw this video when it came out and I have been looking for one of these ever since...now i have the 17 inch version and I asure you it is a TANK. the battery still lasts about 3 hours and it runs at full speed while off the charger. its comfortable and the rubber coating aged very well. thank you for insiring me!

I still use my 2013 MSI GX 60. Specs wise it beats Alienware in GPU performance, but is slightly worse in terms of the CPU. Well optimized titles run just fine. You can even get ultra settings for most modern indie games/2013 and earlier AAA titles. Probably wouldn’t recommend buying them right now, but to all the people hanging on to such hardware, I’m pretty sure you can get away with using these all the way up to 2020. ‘Cause 10 year old hardware is a bit of a stretch for gaming.

Currently am using a 7 year old M41X. The right bracket key and escape key are missing, all the drivers are out of date (computer was sitting for two years), right click key and right alt key are losing paint, right panel on the side is gone, the lights on the front are scratched, the plastic above them is gone, the fascia below them is almost gone. It's on it's second hard drive and screen. All the lights still work. The computer runs Phantom Forces (Roblox) at playable framerates. Once I started the computer up and it gave five beeps (this means either the cpu is dead or the cmos battery is dying), and every single time the hard disk clicks for a couple minutes. This has the same specs as the computer in the video, so that's the specs. Computer bios is from July 2011.

I had the Alienware M17x R3, and the battery exploded in a year, and Dell upgraded me for free to an M17x R4 with an i7-3840QM, and a GTX 680M, then I just built my own desktop 🤷🏻‍♂️

TBH I think buying a used laptop in general is almost always a better deal. The only reason why I think somebody should buy a lower end laptop new is if they dont know much about computers in general and is afraid of buying something that doesn't work properly. I love the look of that Alienware that you bought, kind of looks like something from the future with those green lit up speaker looking things! I myself have an Alienware 17r4, Iv had it for a year and still love it. Its my first gaming laptop Iv ever bought. I remember seeing Alienware laptops go for so much money when I was younger and Iv always thought they looked cool! Something about them just stands out. By the way I love you video. But did you change the thermal paste and cleaned the fan(s) ? If it’s full of dust it might improve the perfs enough so the CPU might not throttle if it did before, same for the GPU

all i can say is probably not. Alienware laptops are usually outdated when they come out, but ill be interested to see how this laptop games. Edit: I would love to see what this would be like with an external GPU attached to it with that i7 xtreme edition cpu. I am sure that for 250$ this is not a bad deal on a laptop.

I still have my Alienware with me. Bought it back in 2013. I do all the maintenance. I clean the inside, change thermal paste, regularly change to new HDD... still plays games fine. But I guess it is time to move on. I bought this because I flew very frequently (I was a pilot) and carrying around a bulky gaming PC with me wasn't an option. Still love the build quality though. The industrial grade (their actual advertisement back then) hinges never flutter whenever I hold it in my arms and move it around. I just love the system. After I finish building my gaming PC I am planning to buy a brand new Alienware and let this old one rest in my hall of fame. Will still occasionally run it to make sure it functions. I always keep my electronics functional.

I just bought an M18X for 150. The guy listed it as non working and no other description except "Alienware laptop" as the title of his ad. I looked at the pictures and checked out the service tag and was like... OMG! This is an 18!!! Bought it immediately. Once i got it in i opened the package and plugged it up. The thing booted right up but would shutdown shortly after. I took it apart and it was just clogged heatsinks! Used Artic Silver on the gpu and cpu, cleaned it up and it works like a charm!!! These things are still going between 600 and 2000 online. I got it for 150 bucks... 👍🏻

This was such a great laptop - I had mine for almost 5 years. Only gripes were the design. The speaker grill would collect dust and you couldn't clean it out and the keyoard would scratch the screen when you closed it.

I got the Dell XPS L702x in the same year. It had the same specs, except 4gb of Ram, and the 555m was the 3gb varient. Cost about half the price and had a 3d panel. I have since put the 2.5ghz i7 in it, 16gb of DDR3, and got a custom bios that allowed sweaty overclocks on the GPU. Doesnt even heat up with the overclock once some decent thermal paste was added. I used it for 8 years and would never get rid of it. Might even get an SSD for it in the black friday sales.

Some of the newer Alienware laptops do have an upgradable Graphic card like thing lol. A buddy of mine has one of these similar models but I think he has the 700 series GPU in it. not upgradable though. I think the ones with the 900 series GPUs are upgradable. I could be wrong on that.

Ballistic Cheeseburger MXM gpus still exist, as in Hi-end Clevo based laptops. The problem is lack of manufacturers wanting to use them, and when they do it is not cheap. Some also launched a bunch of cards with dimensions out of the MXM spec to prevent upgrades to older laptops. MrFoxRox has some sucessful upgrade videos on his channel.
