Thanks for this video, Andrea. I find this video very helpful and interesting. As you are aware, motivation is so important for language learning (and for... everything). So discussions of motivation, even if they are not language specific, are always valuable for parents with this interest.

What would you recommend in this particular, very unusual situation... Single, native English speaker woman gets custody of three child relatives - 18 month old twins, and a newborn. The woman is fluent in French and Spanish, C1 level. She moves her new family to Europe, in particular the island of Malta. The maltese language is a required subject in schools, and many lower schools do bilingual with English. However, English is a very popular "schooling language" there. Probably the majority of the kids schooling will be in english, as the best schools there teach in English. I'm sure maltese language or bilingual preschools and daycares are a thing there. The woman does not speak Maltese at all. Further plot twist - English is mandatory because the judge that expedited the children's adoption ruled that while the woman is allowed to take the kids to Europe, they must be skilled in the English language, to communicate with the rest of the family during required yearly visits. The woman wants the children to be fluent in all these languages - English, Spanish, French, and Maltese. What should she do??? Four is a lot of languages!

Hi, interesting case. Well, the most natural thing to do is for her to speak EN with the kids, outsource Maltese (make sure that the kids get regular exposure from native speakers) and introduce and practice French abs Spanish using the OSOL method and supplements. :0)

I don't think you've mentioned your thoughts on this specifically, and I wonder if you might make a future video about it - but another thing that I have heard from several places/people regarding motivation is that, with young children, they encourage you not to 'name' the languages but instead to say things like 'how would mommy say this'. I have heard that this motivates the child by associating the language with someone they care about instead of it just being a communicative tool that they may or may not be interested in using.

Dear Andrea, my native language is Polish, my husband speaks Arabic. We are both fleunt in English and that's the language we use at home. We are planning to have a baby and currently live in Poland. But we are planning to move to Italy in the future. In this case I'm not sure if we should provide italian resources for our baby before we move? Thanks ❤

Hi, no don't worry about that now. Speak to your baby in your languages and organize a nanny or a daycare for one or two days in Italian to get your baby exposed to that language when you get there or after your child is 1. Consider booking a consultation so that I can help you with the details. There is not only no evidence that a high IQ makes you a better language learner, there is actually evidence that the two are unrelated as there are a lot of cases of children with development delays/disorders that are multilingual. The only thing necessary for children to learn languages is exposure and motivation to use the language.

Hi Andrea, thanks for all your videos. They are really useful. My son is currently 2 years old and we are speaking to our kid only in Chinese dialects or "languages" (my wife in Cantonese and myself in Mandarin). Cantonese is pretty much our home language where all our parents speak. I am talking to him in only Mandarin starting his age of 1. Because Cantonese is a dominant language at home, is it bad if I introduce him the same word first in Cantonese and then in Mandarin? That means he will be saying the same word twice? Or should I teach him from scratch by not saying the Cantonese word he already knows? He will be going to a bilingual french and English school in Canada so our main focus will be the Chinese dialects at home. Thanks Andrea.

Hi The best thing you can do is always speak Mandarin to your child. No need to translate or repeat the words twice (that is really exhausting!). Just address your child always in Mandarin and when you speak to other family members or your partner, you can use Cantonese. It's ok, if your child hears you speaking it. I hope that helps, otherwise I also have a very useful course with very practical and concise videos exactly on the topic you are asking. It's module 2 (www.multilingual.family/courses).
