As a teenager in the late '80s and early '90s, three-quarter and one-ton trucks came with gas engines putting out 190-230 HP and didn't even crack the 400 ft.-lbs. mark. People somehow towed heavy stuff back then (slowly) so we're in good shape these days.

I really appreciate your videos man, keep them coming. I was looking for just this kind of video. Recently identified that my Travel trailer (33ft)was just too much for my 17 F150, fell for the marketing scheme thinking my truck shouldn’t have issues towing at least 10K but in reality it only has 12800 GCWR… meaning I’ve got a bit over 7K towing capacity which is difficult to achieve with any additional gear/passengers without exceeding truck payload. I’ve been eyeing HD’s. Not really interested in the expenses and complexity of a diesel considering I don’t tow regularly. I like the 7.3 gas but it seems to have some growing pains with camshaft delaminating issues and they’re hard to find at a good price. The 6.2 is an old work horse that’s proven reliable. So its on my list but i like the capability of the 6.4 hemi. Keep up the good work.

Towing at 80 mph knowing your rig has a tendency to sway?? Other than a trip to a CAT scale, you would be wise to purchase a Sherline scale to verify your tongue weight anytime your cargo varies from what you normally carry. 12-15% on the tongue is ideal to keep sway from being a problem. Have you considered using a weight distribution hitch? One with friction built into the spring bar setup might be good. This makes the truck and trailer act more like one unit and puts weight back on the front truck axle improving steering input and control. I have an older F250 with V10, 5spd, 4:10 rear for towing a travel trailer. 457 lbs max torque at 3200 rpm is really useful. I'll be keeping this one a long time. Considering the growing pains Ford is having with the 7.3 gasser, I would opt for the 6.2 V8 if buying a lightly used Superduty in the near future, at least until Ford sorts out their camshaft delam problem.

Back in 2011 when I met my (now) wife, she had a 2008 F250 XLT with the 6.2. I don't remember what the rear end ratio was. I loved that truck, and it pretty much converted me from GM to Ford. Back in February of 2022, our factory-ordered F350 Lariat with the 7.3 and 4.30 rear arrived and man... We just upgraded our travel trailer to a 33ft rig that weighs about 8500 gross. Aside from some wind sway, you really don't feel the thing back there in terms of take off and braking. We ordered it with the "camper package" which includes a rear stabilizer bar, as well as upgraded front springs. Although I think that is more for 5th wheel hookup, that rear stabilizer bar seems to sure help with the sway. We ordered that 2022 in the same color as her old 2008 F250, and I always wonder where that truck ended up after we sold it to help pay for our wedding back in 2014. It absolutely broke my heart at the time, but now I'm a lucky guy for being able to drive around the 2022 F350. It is funny how things come around.

But cost and overhead on diesels are high I run my trucks into the ground so kind of between a rock and a hard place on the deciding factor in the future. I bought one of these used during Covid. Basic model, white no thrills. I have had it for two years now and when I bought it there was 24000 miles on it and now it has 65000.. i use it for my business and I have two job trailers. I live in pa between two mountains so it has to climb hills no matter where I go really. I usually have to tow a track hoe which weights about 7500 lbs and of course construction materials. I am happy with the way it tows. The 6.2 liter is strong, the truck suspension is strong. The only thing I found like you have found in this video is it seems to have an issue in the lower gears where it gets stuck in third if your going down a hill. It will do this even when you are not towing anything. I usually slow down and let it catch up when it does this. My house is on the top of a hill so when I leave I am immediately going down a grade and the truck seems to get stuck in 2nd or 3rd the rpms go up but it won't shift. until I either step on gas or apply brakes. The only other problem is sometimes when I put it in reverse, the reverse will thud. Seems to thud into reverse instead of smoothly going into reverse. I don't know if that will come back to haunt me when the truck gets a little higher in miles. Guess I will find out. Nice video!!!!

Good video. Towed an 8000lb. trailer through 6% and 7% grades with no issues on a F150 with the 6.2L. No sway. I think going from a front engine to mid engine car shifted weight away from the tongue of your trailer and that is why you are now feeling more sway.

I don’t use a weight distribution hitch or a sway bar. However, I’m researching going back to a gas motor due to maintenance cost of $18,000 in 105,000 miles. Replaced EGR, DPF, and turbo charger actuator to keep the truck legal in addition to tires, oil and fuel filters and other items on the maintenance schedule. A lot of people get a diesel when they really don’t need it, you prove that a gas engine can get it done. The diesel emissions aren’t a problem when they’re worked like a diesel. When pushed hard on a regular basis the DPF doesn’t require regeneration. Diesels love foot to the floor driving. But if you are using it as a daily grocery getter you will have problems with the DPF, regardless of brand.

I think the new diesels are a little disappointing in fuel mileage. Mine only got between 10.5-10.8 towing which is not quiet 2 mpg better than my new truck. The squat is misleading with this truck because it did look about level but still squatted 2.25”. That’s not a bad number or anything but because it has some rake it don’t look too squatted. Maybe you should try backing your car in the trailer. I know most people with rails (dragsters) back them in the trailer since the engines are on the rear.

After purchasing it from the dealer (used) a couple of years ago, I did a few long MPG tests trips traveling from AZ to CA empty at 72 mph. I was getting 15.2 - 15.5. When I did my first oil change, I switched to Royal Purple, my mpg’s improved to approximately 16.5 - 17 mpg at cruise control at 72 mph. After driving it for several thousand miles, I discovered that 72 mph is the sweet spot for highway speed/fuel efficiency. I also have a 9’000 lbs travel trailer and I have also done an mpg test loaded. I am getting 7.25 mpgs at approximately 65 mph. I do have to say, my truck/trailer also gets a lot of sway.
