It's not a real "Reset," per say. KH4 is just the starting game of a brand new saga where the last left off that will lead to the potential ending for the series. New main antagonists, new possibilities, never before seen characters, etc. Everything dealing with Master Xehanort is over, so it's almost like a fresh start and somewhat newcomer friendly. I'd still recommend newcomers to play the previous saga to better understand the new antagonist and everything that led to how Sora ended up where he currently is.

They should have done a reboot honestly. Kh3 was a rushed uncoordinated mess. Sora’s reverse character development was a kick in the nuts to fans.

They don’t mean “reset,” in the sense that the entire story set up to that point is scrapped. They mean “reset,” in that all of the games up to this point have wrapped up their story arc, and this game is starting with a new story arc. Meaning the story is designed that anyone jumping in will be able to get into it without the weight of the knowledge and goings on of the rest of the series. Whether they will actually be successful at doing that is anyone’s guess, but considering that they hired writing staff from FF14 and NEOTWEWY to work on the game, I have faith they will achieve this.

It’s basically proven what I said all along. He doesn’t know where he wants the story to go because he made it to complicated. He confused himself and I knew this was gonna happen.

I think the reset was a necessary business decision to draw in new players. Personally, I was pissed because KH3’s story was so rushed that it felt like someone told Nomura, “Just end all this Dark Seeker crap already so we can do something new.” I was unsatisfied with the lack of development for many of the characters, the unused lore, etc. I think Missing Link was created as a compromise. Tie up the loose ends, fill in the blanks, show certain character backstories. That way, KH4 can just have a mostly blank slate.

Kh4 is due for a lore reset, and it's clear that square Enix can still produce a good story, as we've seen ff7 rebirth, even I it piggy backs off of an already established story.
