Let me know what you think! - Oh, and I meant to add this comment : I forgot to mention in the video that I read an interview of Cynthia Nixon - who is an out lesbian off screen - and she said she was thinking about not returning to the second season unless they added "more diversity." I think that speaks loads to my proposal that Maud is set up to be the token lesbian.

I think so too! Over on reddit peope are saying it won't happen because there would be no drama. I think there ar plenty of options for drama like Maud sleeping with some straight married woman and the husband finds out or Agnes finds out her daught in law is lezzy but hasn't a clue about Oscar. SO many other ways this could play! Looking forwar to it!

I had never heard of a "lavender marriage" before, but as soon as they introduced this character, I thought this is exactly what would happen. I don't know why, but I assumed she was a lesbian and I thought oh this will work out great for the two of them.

Maude Beaten portrays a gilded age swindler. It is disclosed later in the season that she takes Oscar and his family for all their money. I am not sure if the show portrays her as gay too. The woman Maude may have been portraying was Cassie Chadwick in real life. Either way, I enjoy your take on it, and your videos.

I really like the show. As a gay man, you can imagine that I really appreciate that Oscar is representive and if they really do have a lesbian character, so much the better. I'm old enough to say that many of us had beards for dating purposes when we were not as out as the lucky young people of today who are safe as long as this country doesn't go fascist but let's not talk about politics. I am in love with the gilded age period of our American history. Everything was so over the top and soooo dramatic. I hope this show has a run as long as Downton Abbey which I also loved. I know they used to call them beard marriages where a lesbian would go out with a man on her arm who, I guess, had a beard so they called him her beard. Then that term got used for marriages and also lesbians came to be called beard when the guy was gay. You're right, it is complicated and if I may say, kind of weird. Thanks for the video.
