I am a Christian and I had a slight problem with a dress I had. Cotton, long, with long sleeves, but slightly see through. A friend suggested an orthodox Jewish clothing store for a slip, and they were completely wonderful to me. I had the dress with me, and they found the perfect cotton slip. Thank you to the community for helping me.

@Annacolleen Etters If you sew, a slip would be a very easy garment to make. I used to wear dresses all the time (I’m not religious but I do enjoy dressing more modestly) and started sewing because I wasn’t happy with everything being polyester and staticky. Nothing bothered me more than my skirts sticking to my legs.

I am a Christian woman also. 64 years old, I would LOVE to shop there. The designs are beautiful, and I would feel appropriately dressed for my age. Sometimes, I am shocked to see what some women, teenagers, wear in church. My mother would never allow us in church with some of the clothes teenagers wear at services.

I live in a mixed neighbourhood of Christians, Sikhs, Hindus, Rastas and Muslims and we all dress modestly. As you say we are all strong women who feel safe in our own skins. We are not oppressed. @@GoogleGoogle-fy3cj I agree. I'm also a Christian who was raised to dress modestly, whether it's in dresses and skirts (both of which I love) or pants, which I do wear sometimes. It's so hard in some stores these days to find clothes that cover well without looking frumpy, which is very different from being Frum. I hope I said this right. :) I also agree with you that far too many women these days - younger and middle aged and even older - show off far too much, whether it's how their garments are cut or are too tight. Very little is left to the imagination, and it can make those around them uncomfortable, something that a person of modest spirit would avoid doing.

@@valor101arise not always. Also, if people are going to be checking a woman out from behind, or even in front, they'll do it no matter what she's wearing. I've worn long, loose skirts before that went up past my belly button, topped by a long top that wasn't at all skimpy, covered my arms and everything else, and I still got checked out. So people checking others out happens no matter what a woman's wearing. What a woman's wearing has absolutely nothing to do with that. I usually wear skirts, at least knee length or longer, but sometimes skirts just aren't appropriate because of what I'm doing. Then I wear pants, usually leggings. I always wear a long top over them, though, one that goes down to my thighs. I'm not saying that pants are for every woman - not by any means - but I do think that women have the right to wear pants if they want, and they can be quite tasteful and modest. Sometimes skirts just aren't appropriate or comfortable for certain things. I tried wearing skirts for exercising, and, aside from walking or cycling, if I was on my comfort bike, skirts aren't great for certain things. But this is just my opinion, and if skirts and dresses suit you and you can make them work for you all the time, that truly is a good thing. For me, they're what I usually wear, but sometimes pants just suit a situation. :)

This reminds me of a former classmate of mine at university. We had two classes together over two semesters. During the first class she wore simple black abayas every day, so when she dressed in skirts or loose slacks and colorful tops for the second class I was a little surprised. When I complimented her and said I hadn't seen her in those outfits before, she looked confused for a minute and then laughed. She had been pregnant during the first semester, and turns out she wore abayas because she already had them, they still fit, and she didn't want to shop for maternity clothes! 😂 I can definitely see the appeal!

A Muslim friend of mine went to Mecca on Hajj. We met up when she got back to catch up. I found what she told me amusing, not because it was funny but her reaction. She was horrified to discover that the young Saudi girls and young women wore mini skirts, halter tops and all the clothing she knew wasn’t modest under their long black gowns. All the time we were having coffee she kept coming back to this!

I'll admit, I cannot dress particularly modestly because I have a chronic illness that makes it difficult for me to regulate my body temperature, but I loved hearing your explanation of the reason for Orthodox modesty and the way observing it makes you feel. I have an outfit that makes me feel protected like that because it holds a special memory for me. My paternal grandmother (who basically raised me after my mom passed) loved fashion and made many clothes for herself and others throughout her life, but I was never very stylish because I was shy with shaky self-esteem. When I was just coming into myself as an adult, I found a sundress with a soft pink and coral floral pattern I loved and a loose knit sweater that matched the petals almost exactly online, but I was really concerned it wouldn't actually look good on me and I'd be made fun of. I decided to take the plunge despite my fears and when they showed up I styled them with leggings and some ankle boots. My grandma was the first person to see me in this outfit. I walked into the kitchen, not even trying to show it off - I think I had gone to get a glass of water - and then she gasped and immediately caught my hand and attention. She asked me if my clothes were the package she'd seen on the porch and when I said yes, she exclaimed how perfectly she thought it suited me, how nice the colors looked on me and how flattering the silhouette was, and told me I should wear more things like this. I had heard her rave about outfits my other cousins have worn through the years, but she had never complimented an outfit I'd put together before. It made me love that outfit and gave me bravery to try out more things. Now, when I miss her dearly or want that little boost to my confidence on a gloomy day, I wear this outfit and it feels like she's given my hand an encouraging squeeze.

What a sweet story! I have similar concerns. On an average day, I dress modestly (though perhaps not by Sephardic standards, as my previous religion allows pants). However, I wear a tank top underneath my tops as I need access to my arms, and I'd rather not be standing in my bra by a public sink. There have been days where, despite the visibility of my medical devices or scars, I'll take off my top and continue my errands in my tank top, because I'll get sick from being hot if I didn't. I do feel self-conscious when I do, though.

A couple of my medications and illnesses make me sensitive to heat as well, but I also prefer to dress modestly! Living in canada it's easy for about 6 or 7 months, but in summer it gets dangerously hot, especially in the city (I suspect I live near where Frum it Up lives, too!) I think it's very relative, because even on the hottest days I see many Hasidic/orthodox Jewish people walking around in their typical modest clothes and headcoverings with barely a sweat. My Muslim friend also wears modest clothes and headcoverings and lives her best life in the summer. I think most healthy people can adapt to the climate where they live, it's unfortunately just us outliers who can't learn to deal with the heat!

When the Bible says to avoid the appearance of evil, that would certainly include our dress. I love the store you brought to us today. I also wish there was a store like this in my city. Look up Pope Pius XI encyclical on Christian modesty and you will see that there actually is a standard of modest dress we need to live by in our daily lives. You can also find it in "Dressing with Dignity" by Colleen Hammond. It's only just that too many Catholic women ignore what past popes have said about Christian modesty thinking that since it was before Vatican II we no longer have to follow it. That is not true. Christian modesty doesn't change because society changed. It is just as important now as it was in 1928 when Pope Pius XI wrote it.

I have never felt comfortable with this , I too am an old school feminist and have found the way women's lives are commented on by the media is irritating. I am just turned 60 and suddenly I am supposed to ( never wear, do or be) now that I am officially an old person. This is more of the same!!! Women should wear whatever they feel comfortable with . From my experience, being dressed modestly has never kept me safe. The kind of sickos that attack vulnerable women do so regardless of what their victim is wearing. @@lynnmalpas8124 But you are not old at 60! You are middle aged! If people tell you that you are old then they are as crazy as the people that tell me that I'm old - because here in the UK, once you are 40 you are "old"! Yup, you'll get told to "claim your pension" (which, ironically, cannot be done until age 69 for state pension), you get told you are "old" now, you get told to "forget about finding a husband [if you are unmarried or widowed] and get a pet instead or concentrate on the grandchildren" (grandchildren at 40??? Is this even possible???), doctors will fob every health concern off as "just old age", and another strange one - I constantly get told by doctors that I "must have gout and arthritis", two conditions I have never suffered from and most likely never will given I am slim and vegetarian. Very strange, this new system - suddenly one is now a child until 29, from 30 on middle aged and from 40 on old. Blimey - when is one a young adult then...?

I ran across your videos the other day, and I must say they are absolutely beautiful. Your content is a breath of fresh air on KZbin. I love it when you talk about your Prince and how happy you are as a wife and mother. Thank you for sharing about your life and culture as a Jewish woman. I have learned so much from you that I did not know. I am Independent Baptist, and I love the Jewish people. The two most precious things in life came to me through your people--my Bible and my Saviour. I also love to dress modestly. I feel feminine and beautiful when I wear modest clothing, but yes, I totally agree with you, modesty is much more than just what we wear. I felt like saying Amen all the way through your video. Very well done and very well said. Wow! I never once considered looking in Jewish clothing stores to find modest clothes, but is good to know that that is also an option because modest clothes are so hard to find. Thank you for sharing with all of us!

as one of the kids - i would love to share a little bit with you here! i have had times where i do not dress modestly as it makes me feel like i am shining my brightest and feeling happy and confident. (i feel like myself, so i feel able to best be myself and protect my peace) and then usually as soon as september hits, i begin dressing in my modest (always below knee, never skin tight) winter skirts and sweaters. i have a balance in my life to allow the best parts of me to shine through. i love when people dress in ways that make them feel comfortable and happy, it makes me smile to know that someone is wearing clothes that they love to wear. again, just my own personal life and opinions but i thought it could help for me to share my experience as a younger person.

Growing up with an active duty Air Force Dad then joining myself taught me how to carry myself and if necessary to defend myself. Never into tight fitting or flashy clothes I would wear loose fitting items. Helps when you had to chop wood, clean a grease trap, do some plumbing and all sorts of yard work. I am reminded of a course I took in college on the psychology of sexuality. In one of the books there was a picture of a Western woman in nothing but a bikini and a Muslim woman who was fully covered from head to toe and the question was, "Which woman is a prisoner of their societies demands?" It was a trick question because the answer would depend upon the culture you were used too. It made me realize that while I had always thought my society was "freer" as a western woman, really, I could be just as imprisoned in the expectations of what I should or should not wear as if I lived in any other society. It made me stop looking at women in societies where modesty was recquired and see them as prisoners to men's expectations. I began to accept that if the woman was comfortable in the clothing her society deemed appropriate, then all I could be was supportive of her.

I hear this kind of stuff in the US a lot, especially on college campuses. The problem is that I am not comfortable being fully veiled, but I am required to be so when I visit my home country or I go to jail or worse. You may be imprisoned by your expectations, some women go to actual prison. Nobody is legally compelling you or any other Western woman to wear a bikini. I never do when I am in the US as I prefer to dress modestly and I never work out. But lets not confuse Western democracies and Islamic Republics or fool ourselves that all women in Iran or Saudi want to cover up any more than all women in So Cal want to run around in butt floss.

Fast fashion is horrible for the environment and for the workers, I would think y’all’s religion would care more about protecting God’s creation and other humans more than “modesty.” Seems like wearing clothing made from slave labor, or what is nearly slave labor, would be haram, but I guess this is why I’m not religious, I care far more about my fellow humans than seeing a woman’s knees or hair.

As a conservative Jew my standards for modesty are different and a little more lenient but I am so inspired by tzinus fashion. I absolutely love it, frum women are so beautiful! I've been experimenting with dressing more modestly, and covering my hair in public (albeit not full coverage because of my sensory issues, most days I wear a bandana because it's very comfortable and covers the majority of my very short hair!) and I can say I love feeling protected too. Modesty IS a Christian command. It is only rejected by so-called modest theologians. But there are many New Testament verses that support modesty. For example, it was never normal for a Christian woman to wear a sexy two-piece bathing suit. What do we see now? Even in church outings…Only a handful of churches with strong ministers enforce the “dress code”. People wearing all sorts of accoutrements, short tight fitting skirts to service is an outrage.
@codename495

It also depends on what version of Christianity you’re following. Catholic women ( Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic) are called to cover their hair during prayer, some Protestant denominations have VERY strict ideas of “ modest” dress. Mennonite women must always wear a hair covering and Amish, Pentecostal, Mennonite and other sects of anabaptist forbid women to wear pants. Being “ christian” only means that you believe in the trinity of God the Father, Jesus his son and the redeemer of humanity and the Holy Spirit”. It’s a varied club.

It is commended in many places in the Bible. Both Old Testament and New. Old Testament speaks of dressing modestly in a few places and of women covering their head. Genesis is the first place you see a women cover her head and that Rebecca when Jacob comes up the road to the her. The Hebrew word used is for a garment cover. In Leviticus you see a chapter about the jealousy ritual in the temple being done with the bitter waters of a husband suspects the woman has been unfaithful. Anyhow I’m the beginning of the chapter the priests uncovers the Womens head and then starts the ritual to find out if she indeed slept with someone else. Your head to be covered in order to uncover it. The Hebrew word is again a garment/cloth that is being taken off. Isaiah 47 like right at beginning of chapter tells a women to pull her veil off (again the Hebrew word is the same as the other two, and means garment/cloth) and with doing so along with the other actions in the verses brings disgrace for all to see. But before vs16 he speaks of penalty for women dressing immodest like their captures at the time; Babylon. There is also verses in NT: 1 Timothy 2:9-10 speaks of not adorning our hair with Elaborate braids or pearls and gold like the pagans do (Roman’s and Greeks and Egyptians at that time) and to dress modestly in all ways for a women whom professes holiness in God and good works. 1 Peter 3:3-5 Do not let your adorning be external-the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear- but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God's sight is very precious. For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands… Proverbs 11:22 Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion. That one is an ouch when I read it years ago. Who wants to like a pig. Not me 😂 1 Corinthians 12 And on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, Then you have 1 Corinthians 13-1-16 that clearly tells all women to cover their head at least while praying and prophesying. The Greek words used in the earlier verses and in verse 16 mean garment/cover and is not the same word used in 14 (may be 15) where people say Hair is their cover. It’s not the same word at all that Paul used in the other verses when speaking of a proper cover. Hair is our glory as it states and yes it even made the angels sin (mated with human women in Genesis) because it’s our beauty and a gift to men from God. But it’s not a cover, it’s what gives the difference between man and woman. It’s also why these verses state men shouldn’t have long hair and women short. For short hair was a disgrace for women to have as you would look like the pagan women working as prostitutes in the temples. In vs16 Paul says to tell the contentious woman that we have no other tradition. Meaning tell the women whom fight about doing this that there is ZERO other doctrine than to cover your head at least when praying and prophesying (the Greek word used for prophesying is gender neutral. So for man or woman and is also used for teaching, not just telling the future events like a prophet would). My head is covered while writing this. But we also must remember we can make men fall too. We shouldn’t be a stumbling block to others. 1 John 2:16 says For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life-is not from the Father but is from the world. So we should cover so we glorify God, ourselves, our husbands. We don’t cause a stumbling block to others, and ultimately because scripture says to do so including our heads when praying (worshipping too) and prophesying (teaching) at least during that times. It brings us honor and God honor instead of the world. God bless dear sister. ☺️😀

I was very surprised to see how colorful so many of the dresses and swim garments were! I did have an idea everything was only going to be subdued colors. I would love to find more opaque tights to wear under skirts myself! I also love the idea that it encourages someone to be seen for their mind, and their actions, rather than what their body looks like. I love feeling protected! ❤

I love the way you discuss modesty and I think you move with grace and a confidence that bespeaks that you are a daughter of the most high King. And yes, I love feeling protected.

The store that you visited has a great selection of clothing for everyone. I love the way that you "frum it up" with your head coverings!

I love being protected . I found that when I started wearing long jumpers and headscarves I was treated differently when I was in public. Men opened doors etc . And treated me respectfully . I was very envious of your store .

they were treating you with the same respect you were giving yourself by dressing modestly -- dressing like a lady :-)

I love being protected. Half my mother’s side of the family is Jewish, half isn’t. I’m on the isn’t side. However, my children went to Jewish summer school, and loved it. I’m naturally a modest person, so I was excited to see the shells and slips in the store you visited - it’s difficult to find modest clothes in regular stores these days. Most of my clothes qualify as modest (but not kosher, of course). Thanks for this lovely video tour 💖💕 Shalom!

I love feeling protected! ❤ I used to “dress to impress” in college, showing WAY too much. But now I dress modestly and I have so much more self respect. I loved that shirt/blouse on you! Glad you bought it!! You have great taste! ❤😊 Beautiful clothes at that store! I was shocked there are kosher tights!! 😃

I definitely love feeling protected!! I just found your channel today and I feel so at home! A friend of mine told me where to find you and I'm so thrilled! Where I live we don't have access to stores like this, so we have to order things online or just do our best shopping in regular stores. I've definitely learned the fine art of layering! Lol. And it's totally possible to have a fun, beautiful style that you love while staying modest. I'm glad to have found you!

I love feeling protected. I wish we had stores like that in my area. I am not Jewish, but I do dress modestly both for my own comfort and because it is taught from the Bible. Finding slips, shells, and leggings is so difficult! I never thought about sleepwear for the Orthodox community, but it makes perfect sense. Thank you for sharing!
