Is a longer thesis PhD thesis a better PhD thesis?

Some say that a longer PhD thesis is a better PhD thesis, or that if you have a word count limit then you should use ALL of it, but is this true?

Close to wrapping up my thesis, I am very happy that it is on the short side (core text of 80 pages). It just makes everything better. Statements are more to the point; giving, receiving and incorporating feedback is easier and faster. EDIT: I also like that the thesis contains very little beyond what I want it to contain. The exception is when my supervisors want me to include something, which typically is a very reasonable addition that clarifies a point I want to make. EDIT2: The thesis is on experimental physics, and also contains about 30 pages of appendices documenting the details of the experimental setup. But I also recently heard of a case where people bought the BS, with a 800 page thesis. People were complimenting the person, who had done a lot of things, but who had written a large amount of nonsense as well.

There's some validity to this, but generally I think that it is in writing papers you learn to be succinct and to edit heavily. At least in my discipline, a PhD thesis is a place to put all the background information and detail that you had to edit out of the paper. No one is going to read the thesis in its entirety, but at best look up specific information from it.

I'm in the last stretch of writing and it's so easy to slip into thinking (anxiously) that I need to write more, more, and MORE. So thank you for this video, it's good to realise when I'm in that trap of anxiety, and also that having perfectionistic standards doesn't mean that those standards are perfect!!

In the final stages, It's better to tighten up what you have than to add more. Good luck with the final push to completion!

I find that writing 50k DBA thesis is much tougher compare to my peer that is brewing 80/100k thesis. There is a new trend is that a phd thesis consist multiple publish journal been Integrated into a coherent study.

It's not a new trend- it's been standard in many countries for a very long time. Why do you think writing 50k is harder than 80 or 100?
