I always edit after 2 - 3 paragraphs, otherwise, I get lost. I sometimes edit after one long paragraph with complex and intertwined concepts....can't move forward before editing it.

This is a different case... in a short I've only got a minute so can't include every nuance! In your case, don't focus on writing chapters. Write short pieces investigating specific issues while you figure things out (make sure each piece has a specific focus so that it's manageable). Then you can take the parts that work and craft them into chapters

Well thanks for the reply. And I will say that your advice is correct and I am actually doing the things you talk about. I do think your reply to me is absolutely correct. The overall argument of the thesis is way too big to have a clear narrative/structure right now, until I can gain that specific knowledge. Therefore I'm working on shorter essays/article to gain that knowledge. Anyways. You are sharing good knowledge. This isn't the first video I have watch of you and I think you're advice is great.👍

Yes. I've been trying to get it to write me a meal plan because I hate doing it, and the ai version so bad. Can only keep a max of 3 specifics in mind at a time and if given a specific type of diet it just repeats the top most popular ideas. If ai was feeding us we'd all be either really fat or eating an expensive cardboard tasting diet that's so monotonous and repetitive. It's just so bad. Also can't schedule for a stay at home mom worth a nickle.

What version or model did you use? The nature of generative AI is still probabilistic meaning predicts the next word based on its trained data in which it select the word with the highest probability.
@Sorobai
@Sorobai 2 күн бұрын
@@paultvshow I used chatgtp. The problem is not the probabilistic. I mean it was completly wrong in basic things like atributing wrong author names to very familiar books and don't knowing about the contents. But the worst part to me is what James says in the video above, it tries to do the work for you and it does it wrong assuming it's right. In the end it does all the work for you but it's a complete mess and you need to start from scratch with the problem you have wrong ideias in your head.

Would you quit a well paid job and a well settled life to go to PhD (linguistics) under the assumption that after it you will get an even better paid job? Awesome video btw!
@James_Hayton
@James_Hayton 5 күн бұрын
Probably not! But if you're thinking along those likes, test your assumptions first. Are there any well paid jobs that require a PhD in linguistics (in places where you'd want to live)? And is the difference in pay worth taking several years out (and possibly paying a lot for tuition too)?

@@James_Hayton As far as I've learned so far, job opportunities can be very few and limited to academia, and there might be a pay rise of about +20% (best case scenario) compared to M.A level. Thank you so much for your input!

Great video, it highlights a great point in communicating Ph.D.'s daily worries. I do find it sometimes difficult to respond to people every time someone asks me how many years left do I have in my candidature. But as you've mentioned, reframing my reaction on it helps, along with other points you've mentioned such as self care, routine, etc. ^_^

I am planning to go for PhD but I often feel I am not qualified to go for it. On one hand, I am a teacher of English Language in schools teaching commercialized books of language learning and they have got nothing to do with what I am going to study in PhD modules. On the other hand, I believe I haven't got enough researching skills because of focusing on schooling. How would advise me preparing myself for this journey? I want to study either in Applied Linguistics or TESOL what do I need to read and skills do I need to acquire? What books should I read either on my professional and research writing? I would be grateful if you answer my question. Thank you in advance

You're unlikely to be the best researcher in your field after a PhD! It's a common misconception though, spread by people who should know better. How can everyone with a PhD be the best in their field, unless each is in a field of one?

I’m doing a PhD in materials engineering (wool biocomposites) and I must say that I have no regrets. Of course I’ve been lost and bewildered one too many times. Of course they push me to points where I think I can’t even do it. But these supervisors of mine push me with kindness, with smiles on their faces, with arms opened wide. Every Tuesday, we hold meetings; myself, my director of studies, and two other supervisors. All they want is to simply teach me! I’m learning a lot, I’m growing, and I’m glad to be here in England studying.

Academics like to generate their own made up gobbledegook language when plain English would clearly suffice to explain any subject simply in order to justify their very existence and perpetuate their made up industry of over inflated egotistical, overpaid professors, and overpriced courses and lectures.

Not necessarily useless... in some industries it's very useful (pharma research, for example). Get to know the job market and what's in demand before you start
@NoIce33
@NoIce33 19 күн бұрын
Yeah, that's true. But that comes with a catch: a PhD makes you blatantly overqualified for most jobs. We have pharma companies in the vicinity of the uni; they are perfectly happy with bachelor students with basic lab experience, but if you have a PhD, you can apply to a group leader position (which you can only carry if you are an excellent biochemist) or gtfo, no middle ground. Outside academia, there are not really that many positions where a PhD would not scare the hell out of the employer, and the few that exist require a very specific training that most people with the degree never actually have.
