Thank you for this video Dr. Hayton! Recently i have really gotten tired of colleagues who almost condemn me because I don't use AI apps!!! P.S. AI apps are not/cannot be as intelligent as us: E.g. recently i asked one of the free AI apps a question in my expertise. It listed the recent academic literature, among which there was one of my recent articles! But the article was registered to that app with another author's name!!! 😮 I know it's mine but for the other users of that app it belongs to someone else! (Of course there is a link to the original source that readers can see my personal data to use for citations, but on the flip side, there is a chance that some could refer to someone else using my article if the researcher didn't click the original source!!!

I never comment on KZbin unless something has made a meaningful impact on my life as a Phd student. I found this gem accidentally when I was trying to find something "useful". The definition of useful advice for phd students is lost in the numerous sources that most of them are clichés and give advices that resemble funny film quotes, something like 'embrace the sun'. This was by far the best seminar I have ever watched and I think you cannot believe its impact on us. Keep up the good work and thanks for your generosity in uploading this for free here. Really appreciate it.

I'm only 3 minutes into the video, but already pressed like and felt a strong urge to write a positive review! I'm just in early stage of my Phd, and I returned to it after already failing once. I feel lucky to to do it now in era of AI. It is really helpful to have that not very competent but enthusiastic and always available to you intern! Phd is quite a lonely and isolated journey after all. So, getting back to it after a long long break I'm really trying to start it on the right foundation and your remarks that videos advertising ai-written reviews miss some fundamental points resonates so strongly with me! With or without AI if you try to cut corners and don't understand the fundamental concepts your research will be built on shaky grounds. It's not just about somebody catching you cheating, it's about hindering your progress (if you even can make any to start with!). So, excellent point, that you should be able to judge whatever your AI assistant is helping you with!

Mine, in humanities cost me about 6 years of salary at 100k plus per year so I am in the hole for almost 750K. If I had my time again, there is no way I would do a PhD. The mental anguish and financial impost was not, is not worth it. Mine cost me almost everything precious in life. A PhD is rewarding on some personal level, but most people really won't care. I would suggest one really evaluates their life and where they would like to be in 5 - 10 years before starting. And I mean write down anything and everything you would like to achieve. Where does a PhD fit with that list? If it is not at the top, by a significant margin, you may be asking for trouble embarking win the research journey. Most people start and don't finish. If they were easy, everyone would have one.

As a final year PhD student in Social Sciences , I am starting to panic , as I am yet to decide what methodology to select for my thesis - luckily I have some data to work with , but I feel like I am losing it all- I do not even have a complete chapter and I feel so behind. I only have 10 more omnths to go -
@James_HaytonАй бұрын
With so little time, you need to decide quickly what methodolgogy to use. You may have many options, but go with the one that's quickest and easiest for you to apply. If it's really impossible to finish in 10 months you may need an extension, and it's better to ask early than to wait until the last minute

@@James_Hayton Sorry I should have been more clearer - I am talking about the overarching ontological paradigm for my qualititave research.
@James_HaytonАй бұрын
A lot of social scientists pick an ontological position at the end. It's given a lot of importance, but usually people pick a method, then pick the ontological position that best describes it (rather than it being a starting point that influences the method). There's a great blog post on research paradigms (including ontology and epistemology here: salmapatel.co.uk/academia/the-research-paradigm-methodology-epistemology-and-ontology-explained-in-simple-language/
