Couldn't agree with you more, great video! I got my Tucson PHEV in USA in March, it's a fantastic commuter car, even if you go beyond the 33 mpg electric range. Having the 35 mpg hybrid as the back up helps if you still are in city driving. Highway driving long distance gets less. It's so fun to drive, sport mode really helps when merging into traffic.

I received mine in May, so we'll have to see about fuel economy in the New England weather. Most of our drives our local/suburban and we have been averaging 130-150 MPG with charging the battery nightly. We recently took a long road trip, and once the battery was depleted after 30 miles, the fuel economy was disappointing at highway speeds of 75-80 MPH - it only return around 30-31 MPG. Driving on rural roads at around 50-60 MPH returned 35MPG.

You did a very good presentation with honest "yes IF" scenarios. I have a PHEV (different from yours) and I too enjoy all electric for the short, around town trips AND having zero worries on longer trips thanks to the gasoline engine.

I purchased a '21 Toyota RAV4 prime. I totally agree, the PHEV is best of both worlds. The EV range stated 42 miles in all electric but I have been averaging an amazing 52 miles in ALL ELECTRIC. This is the best all around vehicle especially with the Federal Tax credit of $7,500. So The price works out to being a regular hybrid Toyota RAV4 XLE. I am very pleased and knowing the dependability of the vehicle. IMO

Thank you Ron! Appreciate your "real world" insight on the Hyundai Tucson PHEV. I am considering this vehicle. Do tell me if possible, when you are in "Hybrid" mode, (lets say your battery is depleted) and you are stopped in traffic or the red light, does the (Gas) engine still shut off to conserve fuel ?? Thanks in advance and keep up the great videos.
@RonArmes
@RonArmes Жыл бұрын
Yes, it does. I have also found that in hybrid mode it more or less maintains the battery percentage, so if I have a long run that I know will deplete the battery and have a town at the end of the journey, I will switch to hybrid mode to maintain the battery and switch to electric for the town. During the winter the engine does cut in more to heat the interior. I have owned many cars and this is one of the best, I’m really pleased with it.

We've had a Honda Clarity PHEV for 4 years, a total of about 70K miles driven. We are retired so we can go somewhere, come back home, charge, and leave again all in a day, and all 100% EV. We have a solar roof on our house which provides about 90% of our home and car electricity needs. About 10 times per year we travel to the next largest city, about 150 miles away. Few BEV cars could make that 300 mile round trip without a long stop to charge. But our PHEV only needs 10 minutes at a gas station. So we drive in gas mode about 3K miles per year in HV mode @ 42 mpg. These are one day round trips. We almost always also take a 1,000 mile round trip for vacation, which is spread over 7 days. That is mostly in HV mode. So our totals for a year are 17,000 miles driven, of which 4,000 are gas miles, and the rest of the 13,000 miles are 100% electric. This includes only 17 days out of 365 that we use gas. We've never once charged anywhere except out house so we're not tying up public charge stations. The two Prius cars we owned earlier are great cars. But you have to realize that a hybrid is basically an ICE car with battery assist to improve gas mileage. Our 17,000 mile yearly drives in a Prius hybrid would be 17,000 gas miles. I'm careful not to lump hybrid data in with PHEV which is a far superior design.
@gpaull2
@gpaull2 2 жыл бұрын
Everything I read/watch on PHEVs act like the electric portion of the drive is free. I’ve crunched the numbers and it is currently cheaper than buying gas where I live…but after I factor in the extra cost of the PHEV option (plus interest) the break even point over gas is well over a decade. If the price of gas comes down or electricity goes up and it’s even longer.
@RonArmes
@RonArmes 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, but the cost over the standard hybrid wasn’t much more because the governments subsidies almost made up the difference. Then, it is also much nicer to drive in electric mode, and is also 4 wheel drive with different terrain modes. For me it was a no brainier.

The problem with PHEV's is that the fuel can sit in the tank for months without replacement unless the mileage the car is driven is substantial enough to use up the fuel in a shorter period. This requires either not charging as often to use the IC engine and the fuel or only partially filling the fuel tank to require a refill more often. After a month gasoline begins to break down and lose power as well as absorb moisture. Give it a year or two and the fuel pump, fuel lines and injectors can begin to corrode leading to major engine failure. I still think PHEV's are great, but there are use and maintenance issues that have to be considered.

While accurate, new PHEVs have fuel management systems to prevent stall fuel problems. The vehicle will quietly burn some fuel so you have to add fresh petrol every once in a while. Auto manufacturers want to limit warranty issues.
@tamer1773
@tamer1773 2 жыл бұрын
@@wxdogs I understand your point, but if the car isn't driven enough miles to completely burn off the fuel the problem may still occur. I think they're a great idea and I was looking to replace my current RX 350 with one, but since I'm retired and don't normally drive more than ten miles a day I'd have to constantly be monitoring the fuel and battery level to make sure the gas doesn't stagnate in the tank. For someone like me who doesn't have a daily commute a standard hybrid would make more sense. It's all a moot point anyway because at present there's a six month to two year wait for EV's, PHEV's and most hybrids.

Good show, mate. I am still contemplating a PHEV like the Tucson or Santa Fe vs. the soon-to-be-released Ioniq 7 full EV, which should come out in 2024. I will only go full EV if we also go with a whole home solar setup because we lack the charging infrastructure in rural Southwest Virginia. I want to have the ability to charge even if we lose residential power.

Didn't watch this right to the end, so my point may have been addressed, but shouldn't the cost of electricity be factored into this? No doubt it is still a good beit better than a straight gasoline vehicle, but forgetting about the price of electricity would distort things I think.
@Snerdles
@Snerdles 2 жыл бұрын
I also found just as you had on the Hyundai Ioniq PHEV on the range. It is rated for 47km but I regularly hit about 54km of EV only range before the engine is required. It's been living up to what it is designed to do but even with incentives from the government it seems it will never pay for itself over a regular small efficient gas car. If the incentives weren't there I never would have purchased it because it would have been far too expensive.

I think at least 50 miles all electric range should be a good mark. It gives enough for going to work and back with enough to spare for errands and dropping and picking up kids. More range would be even better but it would cost more and can become dead weight if you don't travel that many miles often so you are paying extra for nothing basically.

@@mjcantwell6420 As I said, the car arrived at the end of the winter so I don’t have that much experience of really cold winter driving, but I can confirm that the engine does cut in to warm the car.
