Really enjoy your channel. While it is very important to test the 0-60 mph, it is almost always unnecessary and unattainable in city driving before we are behind a slow car. I think you should consider adding the following times in seconds to your reviews: 1. Test 0-40 mph (city driving off a red light) 2. Test 40-55 mph (passing cars in city) 3. Test 65-80 mph (passing on highways)

I thought Hyundai was great until my mother bought a Tucson and after 2,000 miles the fuel pump failed. The dealer she took it to refused to fix it under warranty, saying there was diesel in the line. After checking every gas station she went to, pulling receipts and clearly showing proof that diesel was never put into the car, they still refused. Then they stopped answering calls and went completely silent while in possession of her car. Finally they said she could either pay out of pocket or contact her insurance provider to fix the issue. Hyundai corporate was zero help at all. Dealerships represent the brand, and because of how it was represented, I’ll never buy a Hyundai

I have the Kia Sportage PHEV. My only complaints is that I can’t tell what triggers the changes in hybrid modes and highway fuel economy isn’t great, my best was 33mpg after 200 miles on the highway. Love the thing otherwise.

I think the Tucson PHEV is an excellent entry into the PHEV segment, I think the interior is better than the RAV4 Prime, the RAV4's interior feels a little more rugged and truck-like, while the Tucson interior is definitely more luxurious but I think the RAV4 is better at being a PHEV than the Tucson, it has more EV range and its more efficient, which I believe is what matters the most in a PHEV and its also significantly faster while also being able to two about 500lbs more than the Tucson. The Tucson is definitely a solid competitor but it's hard to beat the RAV4 at being a PHEV. Another huge benefit of the RAV4 is that it has a heat pump which is better for anyone that lives in cold climates

The electric motor in both the standard Hybrid and the PHEV Tucson is connected to the _input_ of the transmission, literally right on the _output_ of the combustion engine. So it is required to apply torque through the transmission. I agree that the Toyota/Ford method - the "Power Split Device" as Toyota named it before Ford started calling it an ECVT (ugh) - is superior for Hybrid applications. All things being equal, the Toyota/Ford system is much better at effective regenerative breaking, and are extremely simple. I'd bet money that their drivetrains will last longer than that of the Tucson. The Tucson's 1.6L is also unfortunately only direct fuel injected. This leads to inevitable carbon buildup in an area of the engine that has to eventually be disassembled and cleaned. Hyundai has yet to add a temporary port fuel injector to the 1.6L (yet another clever solution from Toyota), which is frustrating since they obviously know about this problem - their 3.5L V6 already has this feature. So the 1.6L here is going to need regular "carbon cleanings" every 30 to 40 thousand miles. Still, the base and SEL Convenience trims of the Hybrid Tucson offer a *lot* of car for the money.

The Rav4 prime has the range and speed but feels way more like an economy car inside. I would look at the math very hard when comparing this to the regular HEV. It will makes sense for some but not for others. If you use 30 miles of EV on average for 300 days a year that is 9k miles of EV usage. Financially this would save about $500 a year as a guess. This is not bad but not awesome. If you drive less than that the numbers do not makes sense IMO.

Charging door needs to be in front of the driver's door, or the front. Hard to access the door while the car is parked in the garage when the charge door is at the back right. It's also a lot easier to see that the car is plugged in when it is on the front or left when you are approaching the driver's door.

It’s frustrated at how this is available in so few states. It seems like a perfect option for me, assuming Hyundai solves the fire risk issue plaguing so many of their models. I didn’t see if this one was included. I’ll probably look at the regular hybrid Tucson when my current lease is up, though loan and lease rates for Hyundai seem a bit higher than I’d like.

It's not a fire risk... the fire risks are tied directly to only two things... #1 if you have the 2.4L Theta Engine (this has been out of production for some time and is in NOTHING remotely current) #2 if you have an OEM Wiring Harness for certain model tow hitches (assuming you even got the OEM tow hitch to begin with, which few do). Simply remove/replace the tow hitch wiring harness, not an integral part of any car, completely optional, and removable in like 15 minutes. Once again, you had to get a tow harness in the first place, and it has to be OEM from Hyundai on certain models (not all)... an after-market tow hitch harness is also a valid option and immune to the recall. Neither of the above issues have anything to do with the current Tucson lineup. This is how idiots on message boards who don't have a clue what they're talking about scare legitimate people interested in a Hyundai into assuming ALL Hyundai's burst into flames... neither of the above issues effect any current Tucsons, the Theta engine problem is only for older models, and of all the "tow hitch wiring harness" issues... literally only ONE harness in thousands has actually caught fire... Hyundai's aren't bursting into flames all over the place, that's what Internet trolls want you to think... trolls will be trolls. I hope that clears it up, plz ignore (and dont feed) the trolls! ;-)

Hyundai offers different drive trains in different countries... in America, the N-Line is only offered with a 2.5L gas only engine. If you care to share what country YOU live in, than we can discuss the drive train options for the Tucson in your country. Hyundai offers a large variety of different engine options depending upon which country they sell it in.. not all countries have the same engine options or configurations.

Good review. However, I understand the Tucson PHEV does not have a heat pump like the RAV4 Prime (I can't confirm this). If that is the case and you live in the North or Canada, then you may well find that the engine is going to be kicking in regularly which means you could be better off with the Hybrid. We own a 2022 Tucson Blue and love it. We average 38 mpg in SW FLA, with a combination of 4 lane and stop start commutes. Our only complaint is the very long throttle travel before the car moves forward. We also own a Camry Hybrid and confirm the Hyundai's braking system is much better than Toyota, who can't seem to get over the dead brake pedal issue when you go from electric to disc braking. The Tucson also handles really well for an SUV.

I Got a regular HEV Tucson but my Bro in law has the PHEV. I can confirm, the Tucson uses the ICE pretty often once its chilly. Also, Rav4 prime lets you choose to hold the battery charge/ICE only mode to force charge OR EV mode only.... if you need that level of control. Both cars are good, but both have compromises.

I am not sure how they calculated the Total MPG for this one! if this has 13.8 KWh that allow it to drive 33 miles then 13.8/33.7 * 33 should be the MPGe which is around 13.5 miles (max). add this to the 35 MPG (max for gas) gives you 48.5 miles per gallon. unless the regenerative is considered and the fact that the gas engine is charging the battery but 80! not really sure if that would be true. By the way for those who would ask where did the 33.7 KWh come from .. this is required battery capacity to generate hear equivalent to burning 1 gallon of gas (which generated 115k BTU)

The MPGe figure doesn’t mean anything, and should only be used in comparison with other PHEVs. The kWh capacity and the range per kWh should be your main concerns. Just for comparison’s sake, my Cayenne S E-hybrid has a MPGe rating of 43, and its battery size is only 10.6kWh, and the range is only 15miles. So Tucson’s 80 MPGe sounds about right.

Exactly! What none of these reviewers ever mention when they put out videos on these vehicles are they are only available in the ZEV states. Not all brands do, but the Hyundai group and Toyota/Lexus do, among others. It's really something that all reviewers need to be mentioning!

Never like PHEV cars, I would rather buy a fully electric car, either way, both need to plug in, why not just buy an EV to save gas 100%, plug a quicker acceleration, now this PHEV doesn’t have tax credit available, it makes the regular hybrid more appealing.

EV versions of the same car are more expensive and if your daily drive to work is within the EV limit of your PH, it gets a bit less obvious to chose for the EV version. A matter of personal circumstances I guess.

@@arjen9104 if you daily drives 30 miles or less, and sometimes do road trips in the weekends, then it would be perfect for PHEV, but if you do 99.99% city driving, then it’s better to buy an EV, because in PHEV, you can’t just do EV mode driving all the time, gas has be used sometimes, you still have to do oil change and all that, PHEV can be as expensive as EV, I would rather just get fully electric Vehicle, I guess it fits my daily driving, I rarely drives on highway. EV can be expensive, but as long as that EV qualifies for federal tax credit, then it’s not too expensive. This Tucson PHEV unfortunately doesn’t qualify for tax credit, so it is about 5K more than regular Tucson hybrid, at this price difference, regular hybrid is the way to go.

the bad thing is this PHEV is not as efficient as a full EV. 13.5kw battery for 33 miles is pretty bad, even more if you include the energy lost via converting AC to DC which on its own would put around 14.5kw each time you charge it to your electricity bill.

This isn't correct. It has a 13.8 kWh battery but only the top c. 82% - ie 11.3 kWh are normally charged by the charger. The remaining c. 2.5kWh are kept in reserve for the car to run as a self charging hybrid when it has run out of plug in juice. Also the range of 33 miles is extremely conservative. Mine averages 38 miles on a charge and has done 42 on several occasions.

Oh no, I compared Rav4 Prime vs Tucson PHEV and the regular hybrids for months. Toyota knows how to squeeze more money from people with the Venza and Lexus products. Top 2 factors as to why people still want the RAV4 1) The RAV4 Prime can run the HVAC w/o running the engine for much longer because it has a heat pump. The Tucson does not have a Heat Pump so it will always run the Engine for alittle bit once it gets chilly. 2) While RAV4's reliabilty is not guaranteed. Cablegate and recall the original fuel tank issue. The Hyundai Kia group is getting sued left and right with the class action lawsuit that includes the Gamma I 1.6 non turbo engine. The HEV and PHEv Tucson's 1.6T Gamma II engine, its still too early to tell if it will suffer the same oil consumption issue, or the fact it is turbo, and is Direct inj., you run the risk oil dilution issues.

Canada also uses “gas”/“gasoline”. I don’t recall the details but it originated with a fuel used for lamps in Dublin in the 1800s called Cazeline and someone else selling the same product called it Gazeline. I don’t know of exactly how that term came to the US and became the normal term for fuel.

This will be a dumb question....probably. So, this is a hybrid, right? What if you didn't live in a house where you could plug it in. What would that mean for that person? Is the plug in part just the ability to give you that complete electric 35 miles? It would still utilize the electric motor the same, when it is being used in the hybrid times, right?

But I wish it had, along with the analog gauge look, a digital speedometer. I prefer cars that do. Also, this transmission keeps this vehicle from being quicker. I know a lot of people hate the CVT, but they do a much better job at keeping the engine/motor in a good powerband.

If you don't plug it in, you can use at as a regular hybrid but it won't be as efficient as a regular hybrid.

For the price of this you can get a U.S.-built 2023 VW ID.4 pure electric AND it gets the $7,500 tax credit. You didn’t mention the extremely limited availability of the Tucson PHEV. A big turn off is the very lackluster performance in EV mode. Get a little spirited with the accelerator and the gas engine kicks on. So “33 miles” electric range is only if you drive like grandma.

This is extremely misleading. The BASE model ID4 is the same price at the FULLY loaded Tucson. You would be losing out on a ton of features and luxury if you get a base model ID4. If you truly want to compare the fully loaded trims of both, the ID4 is over $10k more expensive than this. Tucson is a far better value.

@@eBikify take off the tax credit and it gets a lot closer. If you never drive more than 33 miles (slowly) the “fuel” costs would be comparable. Start putting gas in the Tucson and a real EV’s long-term savings pull well ahead.

This Tucson does not go 82 mph on EV mode. The RAV4 Prime does.
