Is A Professional Doctorate A Good Idea? | MD, JD, DBA, Executive, And Online Doctorates.

While I admire your efforts, permit me to say that in the USA and many parts of Europe, the DBA is recognized as a research degree and cannot be ranked with JD, MD and other professional second degrees. The National Science Foundation and the US Department of Education rank the DBA and PhD as equivalent research degrees. While the DBA researvh aims at applied and real problems of organizations,, the PhD research aims to produce theoretical knowledge, which may only be useful in the academia. The professional degrees of MD, JD, etc are not equivalent to the PhD acquired from doctoral research universities as classified by Carnegie Foundation.

Most DBA's are quicker less extensive than a PhD and require no dissertation. In the academia world a DBA is not equivalent to a PhD as one is a practitioner program and the other research despite mis-information from the dept of education.

I just completed a DBA from the University of South Florida because school accreditation was the most important factor in selecting programs. I would offer that in addition to the program costs, there are many additional costs, such as travel, hotels, and food. If that's an issue, look for programs that offer online alternatives.

That’s the wrong reason to do it. If it’s just for the title, it’ll burn you out. You need a passionate drive to complete a doctorate. There’s immense freedom in recognizing that her opinion of you is meaningless and not within your control, though you may be able to influence it. Do it because you want to do it and it will benefit you. Don’t do it for others.
