I hate the teacher in the original manga. He's one of the primary reasons the boy began the bullying. The other kids participated too. The teacher saw, did nothing. Gave off the impression to the other kids that he found Shoko a nuisance, so they found no reason to treat her fairly. The boy has to be held accountable, but he didn't deserve to be used as a scapegoat by a literal, full grown fucking adult because he didn't want to admit he's a fhcking awful teacher. Kids don't become shit out of nowhere. It's imposed by society, surrounding, and adults behavior. The movie and manga is a commentary on Japan and its horrible problem with bullying. And the general hatred towards anyone who sticks out from the norm even the tiniest bit. Both diving into the consequences of a bully who feels immense guilt over their actions, and the victim who's forced into hiding and running.

Not so fun fact from the manga: Nishimiya actually,as a child at some point, said in signs "I want to die". I don't remember to who,but she expressed that. Also,in the manga,Nishimiya's dad quite literally _abandoned_ them all because she's deaf, described her as broken,he didn't want to "deal with a defective child". So even before school,Nishimiya's life fucking sucked and the poor girl kept apologizing for just existing cause she didn't know what the hell else the world wanted from her...

I can empathize with it though. Depression has a way of f*cking you up. You don’t have the motivation to do anything, and you think everything’s your fault. You think everyone already hates you, so what’s the point in trying? And as someone with anxiety and a naturally passive nature, I can relate to the natural urge just to apologize for everything. She feels like a burden to people and hates it. And since she can’t just fix her hearing, all she feels she can do is apologize and smile to hide the pain. But I do feel like they should’ve given her more small things to her personality

I think Shoko seems shows no character because that is her main downfall. Because of her inability to commucate easily enough, she can barely share her mind with another. This is what hurt her so much. The effect of this makes her blame everything on herself and think she is always at fault, which is why she hates herself. Shoko thought it was her own fault for Shoya to lose all his friends, despite Shoya bullying her first for being different. She blamed herself again when their group completely separated. She says she wants to "restore what she destroyed." She will always be willing to smile, no matter how much she hurts inside. All her life, all that was in her character was pain, so she tries her best to fake a smile so that others can have a real one. Her Character traits: Empathetic Selfless Self-blame She was even willing to end it all for herself not because she could not handle the pain, but because she did not want others to feel the same way.

@user-zb5vt7yb9v exactly the point. Our perspective is from Shoya. Shoya himself tries to connect with Shoko but has a very hard time to. They opened up to eachother and there was no more barrier between them.

You mentioned about the legs and feet being shown a lot. It was deliberately shot that way as a way to show both of the leads state of minds. Similar to the 'Xs' on peoples faces, the more self conscious or out of control Sho feels the more you see someone's lower body. His tendency to look at feet is actually similar to something I do, I will rarely look at someones face, but instead opt to look at their neck or stomach. If I absolutely need to make it look like I'm making eyes contact I will look at their nose. Although I do love what you said in the video, making light of it helps. It becomes something less frightening and more aproachable when you can laugh at it. So thank you. 😊

I took ASL as my language credit for College. I then found out that it doesn't count because it isn't considered a “foreign language" like Spanish or French. It isn't even listed under language curriculum, it's listed under exploration. That's both horrible and offensive. I always wanted to learn it because it's a beautiful way to communicate and because I'm a writer and have characters in the ASL community. Now it’s five years later and I’m still self-teaching myself ASL and am still writing. We need more of the ASL community in media!! Also, this commentary is top tier!! Hilarious!!

"That's both horrible and offensive" Probably, but don't you think you're being a little pretentious, presumably not being deaf or hard-of-hearing and speaking for the deaf community this way? "have characters in the ASL community" "The ASL community" means nothing. There's the deaf community and those that can use ASL.

18:45 "What are his injuries btw?" When he ran to go save Nishimiya from jumping at her house he bumped into the chair, which caused him to fall, you can see how he held onto his side before getting up again. What supports this is when he falls into the water, you can see blood coming out of his side, where the chair had hit him. SO i assume the fall caused that spot to open up a wound and he would've been out cos of blood loss.

She said “suki” and moon is “tsuki”, the difference between “su” and “tsu” is really small and it does come up in listening tests for japanese learners, plus the lip reading is basically the same, so a young girl who does not know the auditory difference (hearing aids only go so far) and has not yet had extensive speech training and practice getting them muddled enough to not be recognizable is pretty much expected.

Hi, autstic+adhd person here! Correct me if I'm mistaken, but if a person refers to themself as a system, it means they have multiple personalities right? Also, I hope I'm not offensive but I have a genuine question. Do you have a "main" personality, like the one you had before the rest of your alters developed? And also, I just think it's super interesting that some of your personalities are mute and others aren't. The human brain is amazingly complex-
@parrotpepper3322 жыл бұрын
Hi!! And you’re correct, we do have multiple “personalities” but it’s generally considered more respectful to call them alters! The “original” is actually kind of disputed with us, because our host (River) is genderfluid, and we have an alter (she’s not around much) whos Rivs deadname. It’s pretty complicated, but Riv generally runs things!! -Natasha

As a note alongside the other helpful comments people have put; I can clear up a few things Danny was confused about additionally - clasping two hands together like Ishida did with Nishimiya's hands at the end is Japanese sign language for "friends". Not love, but he was essentially saying he wanted to be her friend and put the past behind them as well. Sort of like they both forgave each other. Ishida's mum said he was "dead" because when he fell off the building, he was in a coma for about two weeks. So yeah, a few boo-boos. It's also why he stumbles around like that because his muscles were stiff from laying there so long. She said he was dead to not give the child hope in case he didn't wake up. Weird as fuck thing to say, but it makes more sense than "lol, he just got a headache" I'm surprised you didn't really react to Nishimiya and Ishida's mums fighting at 5:30. It's subtle, in a way, but Nishimiya's mum absolutely rocked the shit out of Ishida's mum, who let her beat her up, as payment for the missing/broken hearing aids. There's a few things here or there that it took me a few watches to understand - like how Ishida said "I get it" with the fireworks, because it's one of the few times Nishimiya can hear because of the vibrations in the ground and your body that you can feel when you watch/hear fireworks. Nishimiya putting her hand to her ear in the bed - it's just her testing her hearing without hearing aids and how she really can't hear anything without them, and how that upsets her a lot. And finally, I'm curious what you thought of "the scene" where all the crosses drop off people's faces to show they're not scary to Ishida anymore. Regardless - I fucking loved this reaction. I can't wait for you to see Your Name. It's got similar "goosebumps" vibes that you know it'll destroy you 5 minutes into the film. And the female lead in that *does* have a personality this time. Which is sick, because your qualms with Nishimiya were the same as mine. Ishida *carried* this film, for me.

100 percent agree with the Sign Language part. Been saying this for years. Even if no one is deaf, learn it. It can only help you. Learning multiple languages literally rewires your brain to make you better at thinking. Literally, it's another way to communicate. Kids who are "abnormal" only benefit from this other method of communication. But yes, things should have been handled better in this movie (but it wasn't due to the characterization being so on point!). That's what makes it sad. Also: ppl don't like anything different, especially in Japan. Deaf and blind ppl especially get treated horribly by society. Thankfully, it's slowly changing for the better.

Please do Grave of the Fireflies! One of my favorites along with Wolf Children in terms of sadness. Do Clannad and Clannad After story, the second one is a real tear jerker!

I’ve heard the book,,, and nothing spoiler-ish for me. I really love your commentary! :) Edit: I figured I’d do one post instead of 2, so if you could there is Maquia, when the promised flower blooms. - a coming of age story, and of the promise one keeps, it may not be your type of story but… I enjoyed it so~ THEREs just a thought

12:46 yeah "I love you" which translates to SUKI sounds like TSUKI which means the moon. And dude wasn't expecting a confession, I love would be the last thing he could make out of what she said

Hi Danny. Thank you for reacting to this movie. I was in depression 1 year ago and wanted to just die. But by chance, before the day I wanted to jump off a bridge, a friend invited me to watch this. We did not have the same type of trauma but I felt the same as the deaf girl. I hated myself. But I have come to terms with my self-hate. Thank you for watching the movie that has helped me slowly start to value myself.

She should have gone full lilo and just rained those fists down. But jokes aside this was a beautiful movie about learning to forgive yourself and it’s really complex in its message because he’s done some bad shot and he’s not entirely a good person but he’s trying to be. And just the importance of realizing something about yourself and deciding to change Simply because you know you can be better it’s great.

My school has a new course for asl and yeah I’m taking it. I’ve got to say it’s my favorite class. We’ve got three teachers, one Deaf, one Hard of Hearing, and one who just supervises who is hearing.

12:44 I love you and moon are very similar in Japanese, I love/like you is “suki (da)” and moon is “tsuki” so needless to say I might’ve missheard them if they pronounced it perfectly

"The boy and the beast" and "summer wars" are a couple of my favorite anime movies, you should give them a watch if you haven't already

I feel like this movie isn't like other animovies for the reason of it not being like those "cliché romance animovies" like (and i dont mean any disrespect) "your name" in where at the end the protag and the main heroin fall in love the end, the movie isn't about loving others its more like its about loving yourself, at the end its not like they fall in love or anything its about protag and him accepting himself and finding the true meaning of life.

The person that made this movie also made a anime called to your eternity. It’s a different genre and it’s also sad. It’s really good though

12:47 the japanese word "Suki" means love\like romantically and the word "Tsuki" means moon, so yes, yes it does

I know that one translation of "I like you" in Japanese is "Daisuke" and the word for moon is "tsuki" so I think that's where Shouya made the misunderstanding.

340 I actually took a sign language course in college for that reason kind of. I had a pet sitting job and I thought there is a chance a client could be deaf and I wanted to communicate with them. We did have a deaf client that we met up with. They ended up not using us but still it was nice knowing I could talk to them
