Thanks for the honest review. We stayed in the French Balcony for our Rhine Cruise and enjoyed it. We found that when we wanted to sit and watch the world go by, we wanted to be on top of the ship and not on our "own" patio so the French Balcony was adequate for short scenic views. Saved money as well. We've booked the same stateroom for our Grand European tour and looking forward to the trip.

We have a 7 night river cruise booked on the Danube, a few days after the eclipse in Spain 2026. We may book a transatlantic while onboard, though I would like to see the internet improve. How were the mattresses on Viking Ocean and Viking River? I recently saw video displaying a thin firm mattress that was difficult for the couple to sleep on. We mostly sail Holland America, but wouldn't turn down an upgrade when it makes sense. Azamara just blew it with our booking, double charging our deposit and blaming me for causing it, claiming I shouldn't have selected an excursion days later. Viking seems like the next best deal.

The mattresses are a little firm for our taste. We find the quality of mattress usually is better on newer ships, maybe because they haven’t been used as much. We always ask for a feather bed mattress topper and a top sheet on Viking to make our bed more comfortable. You can ask your room steward like we do or even try requesting it before with Viking customer service/TA.

Just home from Budapest to Amsterdam. We had a veranda suite. Queen beds were 2 singles pushed together. We fought over the duvet because it didn’t cover 2 bodies. I ended up asking for extra duvets and folded them in half to get enough padding under me.

We eat primarily vegetarian and there were options at every meal. You can request a special diet before you board with Viking and they will work with you on every meal. We didn’t, but found many good options.

Do not eat on the boat. The food is terrible and the wines are grocery store wines.

@@LuxuryTravelDocs I've seen the Viking boats in Lyon, Budapest and Porto. It made me sad when I realized that these people will never experience the fine food and wines that are served only a few hundred feet away.

​@@jamesripton7120 Cruise passengers think the same thing about people on land, so maybe there should be a food swap at the bridge? Of course Budapest is a major embarkation and disembarkation port, so I guess everyone is fasting before and after their cruise?

@@jamesripton7120 You're referring to the Viking buffet? I would like to hear more about this, as well as the dining room if you're willing. Land is varied and subjective, from cooking in a hotel kitchenette, fast food, a grab and go at the grocery, hotel breakfast, to various restaurant grades and themes. Do you have certain rules in mind in what can be compared? Also, what is preventing cruise passengers from eating beyond the duration of a cruise?
