I remember reading somewhere that the issue is those huge industrial air conditioners are rarely clean and the filters never replaced which basically causes to be spreading dust and bacteria all day. Same can be said about old AC units in houses too... just have a look, it's full of dust and turned yellow.

fahadAKAme That's not how thermal conduction works. FYI: Heat spontaneously flows from a hotter to a colder body. In the absence of external drivers, temperature differences decay over time, and the bodies approach thermal equilibrium.

65 degrees???? That's too cold. In the winter, I like to heat my apartment up to about 76 and leave it off the rest of the day. If you are insulated well enough, you shouldn't lose your heat to the outside. And vise versa, in the summer I cool the apartment and turn it off the majority of the day. Usually, I leave it off during the night too and always when I leave the apartment. I pay around $30-$35 in utilities.

Ok for the restaurant the thing, my boss started a new policy (BJs brew house) that the ac stays at 75 year round. That is great for customers, but not good for the sweaty staff running around getting your shit. I stink so bad when I reach over to drop plates off at tables, it's embarrassing. That's why most places keep it cold

In a third-world tropical country where I live, not having AC means you will constantly sweat while inhaling humid air all year round, and opening the windows will just add more pollution in the mixture especially when a neighbour is indifferently burning rubbish (as it is a norm and a non-issue for anyone else).

Restaurant owners intentionally blast the A/C in their restaurant so that patrons won't "camp" when they're done with their meal. Since it's so chilly and uncomfortable, the patron quickly pays their tab and leaves, then that table is "turned around" and quickly re-sat, increasing profits. (despite the increased power bill)

restaurants keep it super cold as a subtle way to kick out people who finish eating. also cold room = more energy your body have to use to keep you warm = more food you'll eat.

Good video! I have such a love hate relationship with these machines! They mess with my sinuses and have to be cleaned for ME about twice every summer with strong tea tree oil to kill black mold spores. But here (N.C.) it’s in the 90’s in summer for at least a month. Cant even go outside after noon. So , we NEED it. Growing up on Long Island we never had it. Only “rich “ people did. Our windows had box fans and were kept open all summer. As kids I do remember suffering trying to sleep some nights but we survived. we were always diverted with beach time and had a backyard above the ground pool . And summers were shorter up north. Here, it’s May to freaking October! I’ll shut up now. Lol

What about the consequences of recirculating the same air over and over again inside a room for prolonged period (not talking about HVAC with AHU Units) Doesn't that deplete Oxygen content and increase other gases %? What about long term health impact of this? This is especially dangerous if someone smokes inside and the remainder gases keeps circulating indoors...

Well, I managed to catch a cold in China once - which also resulted in a fever. In the Netherlands, it usually doesn't become warm enough to warrant the purchase of an ac-unit and as such, you won't be able to find it in a store. The highest temperature we get is often around 30 C (86 F) in the summer. The places where you'll find AC are hotels, trains or cars, but certainly not in people's homes. Anyway, the first time I entered a building in China that had a lot of AC, it was very cold for me. I had to put on my jacket and whatnot, go to a place where it was warmer or where I could adjust the temperature. After some time, I got used to the AC, but I still experience these transition phases when it has been a very long time since I've had (so much) AC.

There's a regulation in Taiwan that indoor public places (restaurants, stores, train stations, etc.) should not keep the temperature below 26C with AC in order to save energy. So 26C is cool enough for people living in tropical/subtropical areas.

I think the reason restaurants are cold like that is because all the little refrigerators they use throughout the building have a much easier time staying cold enough to hold the foods that are kept inside them. I work at a restaurant. The recent heatwave has worked our coolers very hard and you can tell that they just aren't made to work in warm temperatures. Keeping the foods at the right temp is much easier in a cool building.

Well I have a question, Why you need to cool your indoors if the temperature outside is only 29 degree C ? I Live in India, right now, the temperature outside is around 42 degree C, but still now I am not using AC in my room. Well that doesn't mean I hate AC, but affording one and the bills here is still a big problem for a middle class family. Can you make a video that the people of Asia and Africa where temperature is really really high, should people living there use AC? I think it may cause a health issue too, because the temperature outside will be the TWICE of the temperature inside. Can sudden change of this temperature make us sick ? Please reply if possible.

@Liam Lynch a brainfreeze is when your soft palate first becomes very cold from a food or liquid, which isn't a problem, but when you stop eating or drinking it heats back up from blood flow very quickly which causes pain. So to avoid that for your last bite of ice cream hold it in your mouth until it melts or hold your tongue to the top of your mouth so it warms up slower.

Hi I have worked on AC units for over 30 years. The biggest problem in my opinion is the routine service of a system iewashable filters checked and washed on regular periods .Panel filters replaced again regular . Biggest problem are dirty condensate trays which are wet and breed all sorts of germs. I would think that illness related to AC is more related to maybe the filter being dirty. Like the filtering and air circulation is great when like it's nice and new and fresh, but when it's circulating dirty air and the filter hasn't been cleaned in awhile, that's something else. Also, possibly setting the temperature to be too low and then going to sleep like that might be a thing too because being too cold in general as you mention has affects on the body that weaken the immune system. I mean, you want to be comfortable, not freezing.

As long as the temperature is between 15C and 35C. I don't want to cool or heat my home. At 15C, I just put on a sweater, slightly more isolating than a t-shirt and at 35C I sweat comfortably. I'm at my most productive when the temperature is at 18C though. What I hate most if all is really dry or really moist air.

So in other words, only use it to make the temperature tolerable and have a humidifier or two in areas of the house you spend time in? Alright, I can do that.

Wasn't there a study or something that stated going from to cold of a temperature to a much hotter temperature (and vice versa) is bad for you? I don't know. I dont like restaurants to be to cold. Gotta be a little warm.

I don't like the heat, it can get to warm, but not too cold. If it's too cold: put on more clothes. If it's too hot: you cant take off clothes when you aren't wearing any, and you cant even go as far as that in public. Hate the heat outside and you don't have anything to take off. I like the cold, we are best friends. I relish when we get a "bad" cold summer like we have this year in Norway :D Oh and I do occasionally get sick from powerful AC units, but we don't use them here so much, I usually get sick from circulating air when we have more than one window open it it blows like a wind. Especially when I'm asleep! If I'm sleeping and my mom come in and open the window I can get sick in my throat very fast if I sleep with the open window long enough and it's cold enough outside. Luckily in the summer I don't get sick though. If I don't get loads of sore throat pills it will develop to a full cold or influenza!

" it can get to warm, but not too cold. ". Yes, it can. It can get so cold that people freeze to death even wearing ten million layers.

Hey Dnews, what is a brainfreeze and why do we get it?
@prakharmishra5187

Liam Lynch A brainfreeze is when a sudden headache happens due to eating or drinking something cold. To get it (which I really wouldn't suggest) all you have to do is eat a huge chunk of something really cold all at once; like a huge bite of an ice-cream.

The latest iteration of earthship designs keep your home 70 deg year round (taos, NM climate) no ac, no heat needed. In a basic house swamp coolers can work, I hear. AC starts being really important at about 100F for me. Or if you are suffering from inflammation or for the people recovering I would go for the real deal AC with solar panels and a generator backup to always keep it like 70-80 deg and never go over.

I live in Rio, in summer is literally impossible to sleep without air conditioning. Those sick 35ºC nights. Now it's winter so around 3~4 AM we sometimes have 18ºC. I can't remember the last time I felt the need of using a sweater. Long history short: air conditioning the whole year.

I keep my room temperature at 25 degree Celsius in hot summer. It's about 45 degree outside. In night, I keep at 21 degree with sleep mode on. In sleep mode it increases 1 degree every two hours. 18 degree is nice but I have to save money as not rich.

dehumidification is a cause... also one factor is that being unable to endure the heat outside.. certainly it will affect harshly for people who have to work mostly outside..

You should know, there's now a regulation that mandates the amount of fresh air the the A/C unit (Central) has to inject, from outside, into the space you're trying to cool/heat. It varies from state to state around 10% - 25%. That's due to the first problem you mentioned, so you won't get sick :)

yup, hate super chilly temperatures indoors when it's hot outside. Not only because my nose and throat get stuffy but my muscles hurt from the sudden change in temperature... so I have to carry around tissue for my nose but advil for my muscle pain. on a side note, how does a swamp cooler work? I've been told it's better than an a/c for the environment, but that it's too big to be popular right now. I was at a store last night and saw a portable one... I wonder if it's worth buying. If it works differently than an a/c maybe my nose wont get stuffy.
