Is "Albuera 1811 2nd Edition" Worth the Upgrade?

With the popularity of S&T's Ney vs Wellington, I proposed a Wellington's Victory game system version of Albuera, and wrote the Feedback proposal that appeared in a later issue of S&T. The proposal failed miserably, but I then treacherously purchased my second La Bataille game, Clash of Arms' Albuera (GDW Moscowa was the first).

La Bat Albuera is a very fun game. Good challenge for both sides.

Interesting comments about the counters. I've always hated the fact that the La Bataille Leaders have a "0" on their counter. It just makes it easier to confuse them with combat units if you're quickly glancing across the map. The Movement Allowance would be more than enough, and a single number at the bottom of the counter would scream "Leader."

I agree. It would be much more clear if Leaders did not have the 0. It's an easy mistake.

What is your opinion of the new La Bataille de Kulm Kickstarter? Do you feel that it would be a good way to try La Bataille? That might be a good video.

I really feel burned by the 1st edition, a $100 game that has undergone so many changes for the 2nd edition. To be specific: The 1st edition map was horrid. The 1st edition counters were terrible, too. The values seem to have changed, really? We found the 1st edition to be a “kitchen sink” design and shelved it. Way too amateur. I respect that you have a more positive take Eric, but even so there are just too many different items to learn/forget when comparing the two editions. We won’t be purchasing any more games from Tactical Workshop, sorry.

@@steveoh9285 I completely understand. I have had a few purchases that were disappointing. I was fortunate in that I had a good experience playing the game. My biggest complaint with the first edition was the map. From what I see on the GameFound program, they are selling the 2nd edition game to 1st edition owners for only $40.

The landscape was not flat at all. You had a stream or small river that ran through the battlefield, and it had steep Banks on both sides, and then also where the coalition army was deployed there were heels, and so they were able to move units without the knowingwhere they were moving to and what their strength was. This was not a flat opened area.

Yes, there were several important hills and steep banked river/streams. The color palette of the 1st edition game was so dark, it looked like Albuera was either in the mountains or Mordor!
