Namitho19 well in the classic Tomb Raider lara's dad was an ass kicked out of the house and cut her off financially when he realized she was not going to settle down and marry like a proper Lady of society she did not get the manor until after his death. Worked her ass off to fund her own travel expeditions. And was a survivalist she did it for the thrill push yourself Beyond her limits. When the first Tomb Raider movies came out fans were afraid they would use this as an excuse to alter the game some and make it more like the movie which they did

This film could have easily been any other action heroine film if it hadn't been for the title 'Tomb Raider'. This Lara never went to university OR had a single interest in Archeology. Seriously, she was just good at solving puzzles and only went out to find her dad. That's it. Alicia Vikander was the only 3 dimensional character in the whole film and she did awesome as a heroine but at least with Angelina you had her play Lara Croft down to the exact part with her motivations and curiosity.

Angelina Jolie's version of Lara Croft was based on the old school Tomb Raider games and Alicia Vikander's version was based on the rebooted Tomb Raider franchise. So both versions of the character is pretty different and almost hard to compare both of them because both of em are based on 2 different eras of one of the most popular video game franchises out there.

@@nessnake123 I 💯 agree! The movie is based off of the Definitive Edition and they dropped the ball. The game has arguably one of the best plots I've ever seen. The music and the bad guys in the game spark something inside of you which really sets the tone and influences emotions. They dropped the ball so hard they didn't even make it fictional! Like, in the game they didn't even bother to add Queen Himico and her powers. There was so much potential with that alone! Then, in my opinion, they created one of the most beautiful character designs I'd ever seen for a female and the actress looks nothing like her! And they didn't even bother to mention the Oni. A fan made film would've been better than this. I swear, Hollywood has never gotten a video game turned movie correct. That is the difference between the two versions of Lara. This is the origin story for her beginnings. The Lara we have seen previously portrayed by Angelina Jolie is the result of what she became because of her origins. I like the idea of seeing her beginnings but I am not sure it is fair to compare the two versions. They are based on the same character but at completely different points in her life story.

Omg I loved this new tomb raider movie so much, they did such a great job, glad they made it close to the game but changed some aspect for the movie. She’s a great fit for the role she’s so strong and vulnerable at times too, just like the game!!! Glad they brought the dual pistols back finally (doubt people who only watch films would stick around without the iconic dual pistols) Alicia is a great actress, so glad she was cast for Lara ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Really like the new Lara, love the old Lara, the underworld Lara was the epitome, but this new Lara has so much potential and so real, they really made a good choice taking it all down and building her up again, definitely attracted new demographics. I watched the film in 4D (3D with motion) and it was AMAZING so many cool intense actions sequences and sets 😍 I’d pay to watch it again for sure 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Angie will always be the iconic Lara. I like Alicia, but not as this character. It's odd she's supposedly playing the "young" Lara while being 6 years OLDER than Angie when she played Lara. Plus, Angie had ONE stunt double and that was only for the stunts the studio refused to let her do, Alicia has NINE stunt doubles, basically she's in the film very little. Another thing working against this reboot, the really bad CGG, whereas there was no CGG when Angie starred in the films.

In the movie, we actually see a BALANCED down to earth Lara and still being that over the top character, with her unique humor. What I see here is that you don't really know nothing about the previous games. Yes, she was used as a sex icon right after the first game, then what? What about these past 20 years? Why she became a huge icon? A role model for most women? Was because she was overly sexualized? LaraCroft MP they missed the point. Lara is a very confused individual in the movie. From a weakling whose supposed to set the tone by being knocked out in a boxing match, to a confused scared child on an island to somehow a person who can do stunts. The reboots story at the core relies very much on mysticism, something Lara was fascinated about when it came to Queen Himeko, movie Lara dismisses the curiosity of possibilities and goes to science. Wtf. Nevermind that the cast was scrap, the story was also rewritten. You can sit there and say that you enjoy it but don't assume it's anything like the reboot which is something they said it was based on from the get go.

Maybe the more apt title for this review is "Which Lara Croft Do You Prefer?". Alicia and Angelina may have been assigned one and the same character in Lara Croft but the personalities of the early (Angelina's) & the recent (Alicia's) Laras are different that the portrayal requirements for each is just as different. Its not a question of a better Lara. Angela played the old Lara, the rich tough tomb raider, already grown up into her own Woman. Alicia is playing the Lara who's not even THE Tomb raider yet, unsure of what she is and what it means to her. Given that they have established the new Laura Croft as a younger adventurer getting into things, I am sure the sequels will run a lot faster.

I got a chance to see this movie, and without spoiling anything. I had the same exact thoughts as they did when I was walking out of the theatre. I'm going to see this movie again once it comes out because I believe it was that enjoyable. Alicia kicks ass in this movie (no pun intended)

Jolie embodied the Old lara croft games where she is actually over the top just like in the video games while Vikander is like the new lara croft games where they copied naughty dogs' uncharted. There i said it.

You do realize Tomb Raider came before and an origin story has been in the works for so many years way before uncharted. Uncharted was based off Tomb Raider. I get that you like Uncharted but know your facts 🤷🏻‍♀️

She really didn't seem like she was into the whole tomb raiding game. In the game she was as fascinated with the tombs and the artifacts as she was with finding out what happened to her dad.

I think angelina is the best lara croft, but alicia is similiar with lara croft 2013 version (aka camilia ludington), because of same aspect, like character, stories, personality (they're really different than angelina's version), and their past & goals

They should have cast Rhona Mitra. She would have been the best Lara Croft. (She was a model for Lara Croft, but never cast to portray her in a movie. Then again, maybe it was a blessing in disguise as computer games don't make for good movies anyway.)

Rhona Mitra would be a better tombraider in my opinion. She is longer in Hollywood than Alicia, why not give her a chance and she also kicks ass in Underworld Rise of the Lycans, that must count for something.

I think Alicia was incredibly bland and emotionally inept in her portrayal of 2013 Lara Croft. Lara Croft in the rebooted game series was emotional, sobbed often, and it was palpable that she was overwhelmed and terrified the entire time. Alicia felt too stoic the entire time throughout the movie. Angelina, on the other hand, perfectly portrayed her version of Lara Croft. She had to play a character that was badass, didn’t give a fuck, could kick anyone’s ass, unnerving, fearless, and just awesome. Angelina played that character well and even showed more emotional vulnerability when her Lara was reminiscing of her father at his grave than Alicia’s Lara when she (spoiler) found her father alive after 7 years. I didn’t find Alicia’s performance to be believable at all. I don’t get why she’s getting as much hype as she is. If you’ve played the games, she pales in comparison to the rebooted video game series portrayal of Lara (which her version is based on).
