Sam Seder actually used this *specific* example of voting for the guy who you think will build less concentration camps.. And I think he was correct that you should. The same logic applies as in less stark circumstances.. the 'lesser evil might be more obvious in the case of a Sanders type candidate.. but failing that, even when both choices are really evil, a choice is a good thing to do. Not doing so over and under estimates the electoral mechanism, in different ways. I remember Sam making this argument because I think that was the one when I was finally most completely convinced of Sam's overall position. The hyperbolic choice makes the algebra more obvious.
@ramzikawa7342 ай бұрын
Put in such stark terms it honestly makes me much more aligned against the power of voting. Having both parties be pro-concentration camp when the overall position of the public is an anti-concentration camp perspective displays to me that consent of the governed is not a factor in the decision making of the people running the government. There is an elite perspective whose interests are clearly being favored beyond any coalition of other forces. In such a scenario, no promise from the governors can be taken on faith. If the power class makes a sufficiently strong request then, regardless of who is in charge, they will bend to the will of that power class. Presenting Bernie in this light actually shows a lot of the misunderstanding of why Bernie would have been a good option. Bernie was not, as far as most politicians go, a direct member of the power class. Had he won, it would have been in spite of the entire system being against him. Therefore his relationship to power would have been directly contingent on the voters who put him in power. Both Harris and Trump know exactly who is in charge and clearly continue to signal that way. They both blame immigrants, they’re both harsh on crime, and they’re both US military hawks. They know that the greatest interest of the power class is the continuation of US global hegemony. Crucially, even if you believe that guaranteeing safety and security at home (queer and trans rights, access to public funding for services, etc.) are worth the sacrifice of the interests of the third world, the coalition of us military interests includes home rule. This refers specifically to the beefing up of local police services. Both candidates want to continue to give police forces an ever increasing amount of power. It is completely unclear where the daylight is between them on this issue. And the problem with policing, as an issue, is that it’s main function is to reduce the mechanisms of pressure and control the populace has over their rulers. If the threat of pressuring the system through protest is going up against a military force that rivals the forces of many nations, then even a very unrestive populace has essentially no chance to meaningfully use force to fight back. On the largest scales, the results of elections make an incredibly small overall difference.

I like Hasan but he doesn’t have any responsibility to fight for the freedoms he’s enjoying here in the US. It’s very easy to criticize the government and have a one sided view of how America does its foreign policies. He would risk having a dictator like Trump to own the libs because he doesn’t see how his freedoms would be on the line and I say this because Trump is a Facist who made the Israel Palestine conflict worst. Which got us to where we are. Hasan has a very watch it all burn mentality which I can never get behind. His immigrant parents came to the us because of the not so great choices the US has made for its freedom but that inconvenient truth is forgotten in his hypocritical criticism of the methods that he benefits from. I’m not saying you can’t criticize our government but he does it like an anarchist with no sensical goal. Just talking to talk. Palestine would in fact be worse under Trump because he doesn’t care about Palestinians. Atleast Kamala Harris has stated she wants a 2 state solution and I don’t think she will be as lenient as Biden has been.
