Is AMG in Trouble? Legion Stock Shrinking Faster and a Desperate Focus on Shatterpoint

AMG is focussed heavily on Shatterpoint despite Legion having an entirely new Edition Launch coming very soon. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but this all looks like warning signs for both AMG and Star Wars Legion.

They've got a two year plus lead time on development, so the Shatterpoint releases you're seeing now started being developed in early 2023. I suspect we'll see Shatterpoint slow down a bit now it's not a brand new game they're trying to establish, and Legion speed up as they shift focus to the new edition.

This is why they should have made the models for shatterpoint the same scale as legion. Then you make the rules for shatterpoint as a $40 dollar book of rules, share the models across both games, and build a community for both games. GW has been doing that for decades!

Shatterpoint would have sold like hotcakes if they made it the same scale as legion and basically treated it as a stand alone game type like Killteam is for WH40K which would have let you use the miniatures you already have. You would also be giving more value to what you make for both games if miniatures can be used for both games.

The scale makes a lot more sense in the context of Shatterpoint having been developed long before they had Legion moved to them by Asmodee. When they were planning it, it was intended to be their second game alongside MCP, and it all makes a lot more sense in that context. By the time Asmodee moved Legion to them, Shatterpoint was well into development and probably already had models in production.

Me too! I had a huge Eldar Army. Sold it and now have a GAR. The price for the Cody, Republic Commandos, and ARF Trooper boxes are steep for the number of models you get.

Amg has fumbled legion really hard by only giving everyone HALF of the unit updates. Plus they haven't given us any new upgrades since ffg basically and they stopped giving upgrades in the boxes. They also "forget" cards in boxes. It really seems like amg doesn't care for this game and a lot of ppl i know have stopped the game bc they're barely announcing anything and half-butting the updates

@ True. I made my own upgrade cards instead of using the new ones. I only had one game since the 2.6 rules but watched a lot of battle reports. Somehow it doesn‘t give me the vibes like it did before… I think they wanted the game to be easier for beginners and somehow took out a lot of the interesting parts.

I think a key difference so far from Armada and Legion is that AMG has not deviated (so far) from their road map and we have gotten everything that's been released so far. Granted the out of stock stuff is a really bad look, and not having a more robust road map is very disappointing because of all the stock issues, but there is still hope for legion and I am hopeful that Adepticon will give us more.

It doesn’t work like that. Asmodee broke all their brands down. FFG is board and card games, AMG is miniatures games, Edge is roleplaying games, and gaming accessories are Gamegenic. Several of the people from FFG who developed Legion are not even with the company anymore.

AMG has proven to be a completely incompetent and incapable company. Whether intentionally or not, they killed two of the most popular Star Wars tabletop games and are on track to kill the next. Their track record is abysmal, and I have zero intention of supporting them in the future.

A large part of the blame definitely lies on Asmodee, but even considering the extra workload they've handled each game terribly in it's own way.. There's a sense of arrogance in the way they change fundamental aspects of games to make them "better", just because they've had the one successful (mini skirmish) game.

Doing In-Store demos for Legion at this time would make no sense as there is no "Core Box" Product you could buy after the Demo. Them doing their "Print and Play Reboot" of Legion was SUCH bad timing. When you reboot a game you need a new Core Box - which will eventually come - but until then the whole game is in slumber mode.

I shouldn’t have to take off my shoes to count how many months it’ll be before I will see the product that just made my whole collection obsolete. Have the new core box and upgrade card packs arriving as close to the announcement as possible. Instead AMG left enough time that they could point at declining sales. Of already obsolete product, call the line dead, and save on the cost of making a new edition (minus a few 3d printed prototypes and cards).

@ AMG seems to be a big proponent of assuming entry level players will get hooked enough to do print and play for most components in their games since they so rarely update starters. Call me old fashioned but I agree with Crabbock. I can’t stand print and play. I like my components to match.

I've really enjoyed Shatterpoint. I've always seen it as an MCP alternative rather than a Legion alternative. I do miss x-wing, though. I wish they'd just continue it with unpainted minis instead... I mean, even ships on sprue can't be that hard...

I got into SWL 6 months before the announcement of 2.0. At that point, I had already spent a significant chunk of money. I completely lost interest since the announcement, but not because of the new edition. It was because of the completely asnine way they had planned on rolling it out.

So I’ve been buying miniatures from Will Shick for at least 15 years now. When he ran Privateer Press they had many of the same issues we have now. We AGM went quiet on XWing and Armada. It was the same thing he did with Monsterpocalypse. He will not cornfirm that something is no longer being supported until backstock is gone. There was also huge problems with Warmachine , when they switched from in house metal to awful resin and Chinese plastic. There was also almost zero communication. I also was hit with a cease and desist letter for a Warmachine podcast. All of this makes me want to blame AMG, but we don’t know what has happened behind the scenes with Asmodee. They went from having one game and one in development to having five games to juggle. Was AMG allowed to hire more people to handle the extra work? Were they told don’t reprint, we have debt to pay? Was AMG told to drop x-wing Armada by Asmodee? We won’t ever know. I don’t think AMG ever wanted Armada, Xwing or Legion and they are unwanted step children for sure. And I think think Legion is a dead game walking, even if they reprinted all of it. Legion is losing its shelf space and trens are changing. Mt LGS is becoming a Gunpla store slowly. The terrain is just a bad look for them. But I would not worry about that the Asmodee store is in a different state then AMG.

I still play the previous edition at my local game store, and we all worked together to design 3d prints of all the models we couldn't purchase (with enough differences to not cause issues). I hate to see what companies will do to some of the best games ever made...

I recommend reading the Prospectus that just dropped from Asmodee being spun out from Embracer on the Stockholm stock exchange. Some really good insight into how Asmodee may be thinking (or not thinking) about their various IP's. Noteably full year sales ending March 2024 - 51% of sales were attributed to Exploding Kittens, Ticket to Ride, Pokemon, Magic the Gathering, and Dobble/Spot-It. Well know franchise IPs (Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel, and LOTR) only accounted for 6% of sales! You combine that with anything Disney related is going to be low margin from high licensing fee - I just dont think Asmodee even cares if AMG's grows or dies. Its not a needle mover. Just my quick thoughts.

I work at a hobby shop in canada, shatterpoint seems to sit around way too long, most of the stores around us have heavily discounted shatterpoint, and also legion. The biggest complaint for legion, what do i sell a new player? most stuff is out of stock, our distributor has almost nothing, and dragging out this new edition starter set for who knows how long, is just putting the nail in legion's coffin, i can't push a game to new players if i can't sell them anything. Its unfortunate because i love the game, but amg is destroying it.

As a X wing player, i would not get my hopes up for legion... Just like you said. And i think they can take the " Its hard to do painted minis " Argument and shuv it. If they had to start from scratch yes. BUT they had all contacts, probly all contracts and all the infrastructure to do so, what they dideent have was the know how on how to just keep upp the game that outsold W40k at one point. The did not just get a gold calf, they shot it and claimd they were getting rid of it, becuse i dident breath no more.

Cool Stuff Inc, one of the largest online stores, always carried Fantasy Flights Star Wars lines. In the last year and a half they have stopped carrying them at all. I always wondered what was behind that decision.

The debt transfer and the time it will take to create new old sculpts for old releases has put pressure on the supply line. I agree that this situation makes it hard for new players. The health of the game is tied to newcomers. They have me already, but the long term health of the game is tied to new customers. In addition, the price creep concerns me.

Making terrain (scratch or kitbash over printing) is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. When I read the article and saw the pictures it felt to me more like the terrain was actually built for Legion and then the article pushed it to Shatterpoint. This is partly supported by the online posts of the Legion ARF troopers using this terrain. Really they could have posted neutral, the terrain could be used for either, the scale may be small for Shatterpoint, but in my decades of scenic construction, the theory is if you have to error on a sizing difference for your terrain, error on the smaller side it makes more sense to the eyes. So building for Legion scale makes sense if you are going to use it for both. I also felt that AMG did a disservice to Shatterpoint by saying that it was meant to be played on such a gantry-heavy table. We've played it with terrain more like this, and with density more similar to MCP and honestly, it's fun and uses different tactics as the cover and LOS come into play more. I now have about five sets of terrain that are in general interchangeable between the two games, with a wide range of densities. Had they broached terrain more like Necromunda has done, I think it would have changed the feel between games a bit more. Another point towards Shatterpoint desperation is we were told when the 3rd mission pack was announced that it was the last, and it was going to move on to different game modes. While they have been showing work on other modes, they did just announce a 4th mission pack, before the release of any physical new game mode, contrary to what was said just last year. I do hope they find a way to keep both going, despite whatever economic/political shenanigans are going on over their heads.

It's really important to note that AMG never sought out the FFG games, they were moved to them by Asmodee as part of their consolidation and restructuring. It's also worth noting that AMG got very little in the way of transferred or new staff to work in those games, so were suddenly doing a lot more worth with basically the same staff.

Fortunately I found resellers who still have petty much everything. What's going on with AMG ? They never were up to the task of managing Armada, X-Wing or Legion. They just don't have what it takes. As I have already said : FFG was doing an incredible job and they were butchered by these idiots at Asmodee. And yes you're right they never cared about FFG games they had to manage. AMG is interested only in Marvel models and games. They don't understand anything about legion's skirmish style. Asmodee should wake up and do something about it but would they be willing or do they even care at this point ?

I agree about the terrain. If they were showing how to use Shatterpoint terrain in Legion, it would be different. They clearly prefer Shatterpoint, which is a head-scratcher because it's an inferior and less popular game. And the shift to print-and-play IS cheap. It tells me they're looking for ways to cut even the smallest of costs. If they think they can transition players from Legion to Shatterpoint, they're in for a rude awakening. But to be fair, an awakening of any kind would do AMG some good. I believe they thought they could create a Star Wars Crisis Protocol game and syphon players from Legion as a cash cow. But their pet project is in trouble and it's probably pretty sweaty in the AMG offices. These guys should not play poker.

Part of me wishes AMG would just stop "producing" Legion and kill the game. That way, we could all just play the game with a chosen set of rules, print our own objectives, etc. I don't normally go in for the negativity, but AMG is disorganized in their rollout of everything including rules. And every time I see an interview with Will Shick, he seems cagey, evasive and far beyond his depth. This doesn't generate confidence among consumers.

The main issue about Shatterpoint, to me at least, is that too much came out too fast and it was hard to keep up with since the release. I understand they wanted to get as much representation as early as possible, but as a collector, it left me me overwhelmed. As far as to why it may be doing poorly, and lot of us are still salty about what AMG did to Armada and X-Wing.

they released shatterpoint which directly competed with legion. of course that wasnt going to end well for them. not making shatterpoint and legion compatible was a catastrophic mistake. legions finished now IMO.

Return it to the hands of the original designers and team, the ones who had the love and care to create arguably the best sci-fi large scale skirmish game onto the TT. AMG simply had Legion forced onto them, and they had and have no idea of how to grasp something of Legions scale and complexity. The transition during the COVID era didn’t help them but that’s an excuse that fade with legitimacy every day. I’m very happy that I never sold my Legion stuff, when I was down sizing.

They had demos announced for Shatterpoint at my LGS too. I am surprised that they stopped printing older style Legion already, I guess they expect the stock to hold out? I hope they have a more concrete release schedule for things like a core set at Adepticon

AMG should not have made shatterpoint. If they wanted a different scale game they should have produced a 10mm game. You could field large armies and huge vehicles.

Problem is with the new rule sets is trying to get players back into it. I have a friend who hasn’t played for a while now and has no interest in picking it back up again because of the changes

AMG has made me completely stop buying what little stuff is available at this point not just because of price but because I feel like I’m gonna waste money on another game that’s gonna loose support

I recently got into the hobby side (painting, etc.) after getting sucked into tabletop by Armada. I had to make the choice of what game to throw my lot into, and I opted for 40k over Legion because of all the uncertainty around the latter and the lack of stock in my area. The cancellation of Armada also soured me on AMG stuff.

Got into Legion and had just about got a rebel army assembled and painted when they announced Shatterpoint, changing scale felt like a backstab personally

Not defending AMG really, they've definitely lost my trust.. But to give them the benefit of the doubt, Shatterpoint was likely in production before they got all the miniatures games shoved on them by Asmodee.

I think I made all the same points on Reddit and Facebook a couple days ago! On the plus side, I just got a notification that my metallic Enterprise for Into the Unknown is preparing for shipment! Looks like WizKids knows how to make detailed, pre painted miniatures that release at close to the promised timeline…

The most affordable and least barrier of entry is battletech and has stayed really affordable and cheap. One page rules with greedy army men as well.

Thanks for the video - the biggest issue is that there is a loss of faith in AMG after X-Wing being axed so unexpectedly after making promises about the future of this game. How can consumers consider the future and invest in the games financially and in terms of time when the company hasn’t been open to fans in the past and don’t seem to have the interest of consumers to heart in my opinion.

They won’t reprint stuff in the old style packaging. They can still reprint vehicles but only once they end up with the new packaging and art style. They haven’t announced those yet though so it could be awhile.

i am seeing a pattern here about vehicles. So far since AMG took over, i had not seen a single Vehicle models made by them. What ever vehicles that was release on the fringe of their take over was designed by FFG. I dont know about you but it seems that AMG hates vehicles..

The fact that i am not the only one gets me worried. I love Star Wars Armada, but we all know what happened there. Lets see what happens but if they dont manage to get them running i think we are on the last chapter of AMG.

AMG seem comically incompetent. They updated Xwing to 2.5 then 2.6 but never released a new starter set. Legion has been rebooted and there's no starter set to be seen. Without an easy inroad no one will take up your game. Even Warlord games has done a true starter set for its 3rd edition of Bolt Action. It's currently impossible to walk into a games store with £100/$100 dollars and walk out with a box that you can be playing by the evening with your mate and that's a travesty for a wargame.

They actually released two new starter sets for X-Wing, one for the Rebels, one for the Empire, complete with printed rules and everything you needed to play.

Sunk cost fallacy. The whole reason AMG even has Legion and X-wing and Armada is because they wanted to make Shatterpoint (allegedly... from a bajillion sources). Now that the whole reason they did this is failing and no one wants to play Shatterpoint they have to show some amount of love for games they did not make and did not even want or care about. You can FEEL the desperate desire from them for the community to love Shatterpoint and we don't. So RIP three reasonably successful games for the hubris of a company.

AMG were developing Shatterpoint separately long before Asmodee decided to restructure. The FFG Star Wars miniature games were moved to them by Asmodee because they were already working on Shatterpoint, not so that they could start work on it.

@@Jarval So to be clear, I am going off of second and third hand reporting. But the reason Asmodee moved all the tabletop miniature Star Wars games to AMG was for licensing reasons. AMG might have been working on a MCP style game for Star Wars before the move but they did not have the rights to release it and/or splitting the Star Wars tabletop miniatures rights was too much trouble. AMG only got control of Armada, X-wing and Legion so that they could release Shatterpoint. That is what I was told and have read. It is also why FFG is still making Star Wars games but none of them are tabletop miniature games.

EDIT: What Legion player asked for Shatter point. Why couldn't Shatter Point rules have been branded to Legion and all of the shatterpoint characters be given new life within Legion? Legion could then be small game(shatterpoint), skirmish(normal Legion skirmish pts) and large (normal pts)? First Thought: I wonder if they developed Shatterpoint to compete with 3D printed variants. I had a painted Commander Cody, Waxer and Boil for Legion years before AMG released them. Look at the different Named Clones shatterpoint has but Legion doesn't. I have the following 3D printed named Clones for Legion: Ponds, Wolffe, Gree, Bly, Sargent Hound, Fox, Thorn, Doom, Doom Company, Mayday, Jet, Bacara, Galactic Marines, Blackout, Spark, Tango Company, Jek, Rys, Thire and Stone to just name a few. All of these have been 3rd Party models. I have 5, 332nd Company clones that are from DFD. I have Anvilrage, Hokusa 3D Designs' models and more. If FFG/ AMG had made more kitbash-able clone models. I would've been buying official made minis if I could recreate named clones from the show. Look at how many varied named clones are already available for Shatterpoint. Dedicated official models to represent those clones.

I was told full-range reprints are coming. Two big suppliers here in the UK have told me they expect to have almost the full range back in stock by the end of February. I guess we will find out in a few weeks if our fears are warranted.

When I saw the article I just thought it was a bad timing for a legion article about destroyed vehicle terrain. Then I kept seeing shatterpoint in the article and I was mad. It really feels like AMG just doesn’t have their finger on the pulse of the Star Wars gaming community. ALSO! Legion is a much smaller scale so all the models will look off if those are on a shatterpoint table. Just like putting shatterpoint terrain out for Legion looks off putting.

Shatterpoint at the two FLGS' I frequent has been on clearance. That's not been the case for Legion products, or even X-wing! (Not a fan myself -- had the wrong mechanics and feel; had hoped for a skirmish version of Legion. I still say Imperial Assault skirmish was the best Star Wars skirmish game.)

Honestly feels weird using Legion vehicles as shatterpoint terrain for 2 reasons: Makes way more sense for them to be terrain for legion, as those are in the game and match the scale 2 it’s the wrong by scale for Shatter-point

I have tons of Legion stuff to paint, none of which I bought at the RRPs (all from sales - I am very patient). But the term 'sh*t-show' certainly comes to mind. The strategy of releasing v2 but not selling the cardboard components, and now declining to reprint out-of-stock units so players have no choice but to buy secondary-market alternatives (some of which seem much nicer than the originals), is surely costing AMG a ton of revenue.

Armada and X-Wing players are saying "We told you so" right now. AMG flat out insulated their customer base over and over. I'll never buy anything that has their logo on it again 🤷 AMG didn't want the FFG games and didn't want that play style. And the corporate suits that don't care about the customer, only the ROI forced the licensing changes. The players who loved the original play style and were return customers were effectively forced out in favor of "new customers" that didn't exist.

As much as I wanted to love and spend money on Legion and Shatterpoint, I hesitated after the way that AMG treated X-Wing. I wish Star Wars tabletop went to a company that actually wanted it.

I agree they should make a post or stream diving into the reprints and how they plan to address and to assuage some of the fears people have. That being said it is by no means struggling the way shatterpoint is struggling. So putting some more effort into that game with just a low cost let's teach people the game to see if we can spark interest, makes sense.
