As someone who has lived in the Northeast most of my life, I can say with absolute certainty that the outside of these vehicles is not even close to as bad as it can get. Lol. There are days where I swear there is more dirt & salt on my truck than paint & clear coat. The insides don’t really shock me either as when you are driving for hours a day in a car, it can get disgusting quick. I’m fairly meticulous about my truck, and spend time at least every other weekend cleaning it up and we put maybe 100 miles a week on it.

I tried driving a typical 9-5 on a regular work day few times, the demand is just not there. At least not here in Wisconsin. Big cities would obviously be a different story. on a side note regarding steel rims: there's one more factor to it which Mitch didn't mention but plays a role in picking them as well: alloy rims aren't all that expensive anymore but they do bear one big disadvantage in the name of potholes. in harsh winter conditions, they're kinda unavoidable (we should maybe just dub 'em, "tourist attraction" 😂). when you hit them with alloy rims, they easily crack, requiring them to be replaced (and making it impossible to continue with your drive) while steel ones are much more forgiving, only bend, and might not need to be replaced. you can usually continue with your drive (even if just slowly to the next shop; you're typically at least not forced to stay put.)

I can confirm on the two things you mentioned about cars up in the north. I'm in Sweden and we also salt our roads during winter time, and YES this is a typical winter car you are cleaning. We usually joke whenever someone we know buys a white car "oh. white... have fun in the wintertime.." and regarding the rims. This is the most typical winter rim we have in Sweden - your car may be fancy but only in the summer time... In the wintertime is no worth the extra cost for nice rims when it will only be covered in snow and grease from the salt on the roads.
