something i’m struggling a lot with at the moment is comparison to other artists in the sense that i don’t feel skilled enough to mske the art i wanna make and ending up just not practicing😅 like i struggle drawing a line between helpful inspiration from artists and unhelpful comparison yk

A topic I would like to see you discuss is feeling like you're not good enough to be doing art. I love doing art but when ever someone tells me I'm talented or calls me an artist I get very uncomfortable because I personally feel like my art is not good enough for me to be called an artist or talented. Do other people feel like this or am I just overthinking things?( little context I started doing in grade 11 and now I'm a first year uni student so I haven't been doing art for a long time( about 2-3 years) )

I honestly feel very conflicted on this…for example, once my character was compared to Snufkin and that made me happy because I love Snufkin and since my OC wasn’t inspired by Moomins at all I know the comparison didn’t go further than “Your character gives of the same cozy energy” which felt nice because i want my work to have that cozy feeling. However… I don’t know how common this is, but I always struggled with knowing the line between “inspiration” and “stealing.” Because once I see something done in a way that i really liked, my brain PHYSICALLY can’t move on, and that has made me very insecure in terms of my skills in creativity, originality, and integrity….How do you execute something to have the same feeling as the media you enjoy but is still different to be your own? So…I know comparisons aren’t made with the intentions to hurt (most of the time at least) but it can feel like a huge stab in the chest that says no matter what you try, your work will never be your own.

I feel the same as you, but I think that we shouldn't worry that much and focus on the positive. Artist get inspiration form anything and that sudden obsessions we acquire when seeing someone's art is just feeling inspired, besides, nothing is 100% original and getting inspired is a good thing.

I think too that it’s hard to not be inspired by other artists. We are literally exposed to more art than we can possibly remember every single thing we’ve seen. Before social media, I could remember a book I read with an illustrator I liked or a cartoon I watched. We see so many posts and videos from all the platforms that something is bound to rub off. I understand how you feel, I actually was feeling that same thing when I drew something this week. After I posted, I was like “oh no! This looks like a ___!” I love this design but I can tell you I haven’t even seen it in a long time but it’s popular enough that I was afraid of someone else pointing out the similarities. I decided to address it myself because I just felt so guilty about it, but there’s so many similarities in things we like for a reason. I think it’s natural that we will make more creations that evoke what we liked about other characteristics and even art techniques. 🤍🤍🤍

Thank you so much for sharing your experience kuronam! Like I said in the video, just because what we create can never 100% be original, it is still original to our voices and hands as artists!! It’s still so valuable to create for our own sake and make things we love. So many of the biggest artists in history “stole” or took inspiration from artwork before them. It’s okay to be inspired!! 💖 especially if you’re trying to develop your own style and voice as an artist. Pulling from different art and trying new things is crucial to growing creatively💖

I always flip flop on how I feel about this. My characters are dear to me, reflections of myself, and part of a novel I intend to publish. Sometimes when people tell me comparisons I try to take as, "Your work is cool and it makes me think of this other thing that is cool!" No harm intended. However I have had comments that sound more along the lines of accusing me of copying or seeking inspiration from larger shows. In an original character sheet, one of my characters had marital problems that heavily revolved around another character. Someone pretty quickly commented that I must have written that after watching Our Flag Means Death, drawing inspiration from Stede. It didn't help that my character was also blonde. I felt a bit like my work was being shrunk down into simply watching a popular show and making a copy of a character. I told this person that I love Stede but that I have had this character in mind for five years. Before I finished school and before Rhys Darby ever played Stede. I feel like most of the time it is meant as a harmless way to compliment work when others don't know what to say or aren't as familiar with your characters. However, it can be so upsetting to be made to feel like a fraud who has no original ideas regardless of the commenters intentions.

i feel this,, it can be so disheartening but remember your designs still hold so much value personally coming from your hand! although they may end up being confused to other characters, that doesn't take the value away from your creation. it's difficult to get through it, but you don't let it stop you from continuing to create! you got this!

I feel it also depends on how the commenter compares them. for example, “i love your style! it reminds me of (insert comparison here)!” or “this reminds me of my favorite character (insert character here)!” sounds a lot nicer than comments like “looks like (character)” or “i thought this was (character)” you know? i agree with everything you say in this video though! it is hard to pick a side but i love how you talked about it. I'm an artist, and I suck at verbalizing my thoughts so I use a lot of examples to try to convey what I mean. So when people say that my art reminds them of another character, I tend to understand what they mean by that. But I'm also aware that there are people who do it for malicious reasons. I haven't come across these with my art, but I understand it's out there.

I personally think that on this topic, it doesn't bother me at all if people compare my characters to others that they remind them of, as long as they do it as a compliment or something like that, if it doesn't come with malice or disrespect, this kind of comments seem constructive to me! I love these deeper conversations! I think this one really teaches us to think before commenting anything about someone's art. I have never had anything go viral so I really wouldn't know what it is like, but comment sections of popular artists scare me lol. Even if there's 50 comments praising your work, you will always remember the 1 comment that you didn't like reading. Even if the sender didn't intend it to be a negative comment. So don't just comment whatever you think, but don't hesitate to comment (for that sweet ✨interaction✨ and the artist's happiness ) even just a "😍" makes artists feel really warm inside haha. Loved this video✨

i also have gotten comments like that and i felt really offended in a way but then i realised not everyone who consumes art are artists, they solely just enjoy whatever media and whenever they see something similar to what they liked before they have the need to comment that for some reason. I have come to accept the fact that although i may not be able to create unique character designs , just like you mentioned, their story will make them a unique individual. this video was so calming and i really enjoyed it, i was so glad to see that there are many artists who face this issue besides me. love your videos

@@sketchesofshay hmm something that I've been thinking about for a while is how do artists come up with ideas for interactions amongst their characters, I always find it difficult and cant find the right picture or anything on the top of my head. How do you come up with interactions, what media do you consume in terms of this and what is your process when it comes to this ? I hope this makes sense, if you dont mind I'll think about more discussion ideas and let you know! oh and it would be nice if you did collabs with fellow artists on youtube and did challenges, such as drawing eachothers oc with only description etc.

Love your videos always! This is such an interesting topic. It annoys me because maybe even I am semi aware of some comparison being made, maybe those are the influences that inspire my art style or something, but it’s still different and I feel like when people compare, then my art loses the distinction I felt it had. Like it isn’t what I was going for so I feel as though I didn’t do a good job (?) but like one person said, the comparison doesn’t make you any less of an artist

I usually don’t mind when people make comparisons but it honestly depends on the context. Like, if someone says “this reminds me of” and the two characters have similar traits then I can see the resemblance but if it’s like “did you steal this design because it’s really similar to”. I know that nothing in the world is truly original anymore, especially since we’re subconsciously inspired by things we like, but it’s a sort of slap in the face when you’re accused of stealing when you didn’t know the other character existed in the first place

I think it has to do with artists wishing and hoping to be creative and original. When someone creates something they have the belief that it was their thought alone that the character or thing was created from, when in all actuality it is a combination of all the things the artist has seen or loved or been inspired or influenced by before putting their ideas onto paper. Whether we want it or not, there is no original thought that is truly ours and that I think is where the sadness when these comments come in comes from. Your character designs look like another character because without you knowing it, you have drawn inspiration from something else you have seen subconsciously. There is nothing wrong with art inspired by art or the things we love, that’s what makes it unique and beautiful in its own right. Especially now with social media and sharing art so easy, looking like or having art look similar is easy because that is the media we are consuming. Just my thoughts.

this semi-video essay + q&a structure was really cool. i think comparison is a double edged sword/nuanced, of course. it's a given that the moment something becomes public, it becomes open to comparison and critique; it's inevitable. i can see how unwarranted advice or comparison is definitely irritating and it can be disheartening when the first thing someone thinks of or has to say abouth art you make is connected to something else but i think that's unfortunately also unavoidable. not to dismiss the artists feelings but due to the unavoidable nature, i think changing the way one percieves the comparisons is the best way to go about it.

I generally don't care about it at all -- it won't make me happy like an average comment would, but nor would it stick in my head. And I really agree with your "stereotyping" point! Haven't heard many others point that out! But for me, most of the comments I've gotten comparing my work to others that made me uncomfortable or annoyed were the ones where they were comparing to someone whos art is obviously way better than mine (Berserk comic pages?? I can't even draw backgrounds 😂 it's embarrassing) Or ones that were written in a dismissive or even accusatory way (OC being called a "Mileena clone")

I'm just at the first comment on the topic (so, what, 3 minutes in?) but my 2c on the topic as a viewer and as an artist: For me, the comparison of characters/pictures/scenes is indeed a little two-edged. However, when it comes from the place of "this is so cool, reminds me of X!" I'm actually really happy to receive the comment. For me, it shows that the art connected with the person: obviously the thing they compared it to is (/was) important to them and the art managed to recreate some piece of that feeling. This is also the way I (usually) comment "this reminded me of X". Now, there's the other way too. The suspicious, territorial "reminds me of X, you copycat". I get that comment too, but to me that is only valid with artists that are secretive and don't want to say they use references or give credit to inspiration sources. It might hurt, but you should reevaluate. I get it might be kinda blah to get that one *if* you're genuinely unconnected to whatever they are comparing you to. Sometimes it will give you inspo and a direction to look for art you would like but haven't known about. Sometimes it's a downer, especially if you thought you landed on something original and cool. However, in the latter case: no art is truly original. And that is absolutely _fine_. All in all, when giving and getting feedback: remember the tone and the intention.

Okay, after the video... I'm not a character based artist. I've never ever had an OC. I don't particularly follow/enjoy "OC art". Totally understandable to be annoyed with a constant comparison you didn't mean and isn't related to your vision! But idk, if you keep getting a "wrong" comparison, I would think that there's some further character development needed. 🤔 It's hard to say how personally I would take something like that as I don't do OC stuff, but I would like to think that as I'm old, I'd take it as a need for further work... The random comparisons and recs you can always ignore. 🤷

I dont mind when people compare my work to others. I think its a very normal reaction to have when youre exposed to something new. Say you try spaghetti for the first time, you might say "oh, the taste reminds me of lasagna!" even though spaghetti and lasagna are pretty different. Obviously its a different story when theyre being disrespectful about it, but i think most of the time its just people trying to connect this new character to something they already know

I feel like I dont mind if someone comments my character reminding them of another character in media or asking if I was inspired by them cause I definetly am inspired by media around me and sometimes it can open a new inspiration for me?Honestly I think it comes down to what exactly the point of the comparison is? Is it to draw conenction/inspiration, or is it to accuse someone of stealing or being unorigonal. I grew up in art groups constantly bullying anyone who made a character with the same hair or fashion if you wernt part of their circle, and on the flip side fully ahd someone copy my character even down to the point of their own writing being a near copy paste of my own, and I kinda just raise an eyebrow and coose to keep my distance? I never see the point in making a fuss, maybe if it had to do with stealing or accusing stealing of say a story or design thats being merchandised, but if its just personal characters? eh, you could give two people the same character and theyll still have differences in how they present them, just be nice and let people have their fun

i honestly don't like it all that much, most of my characters aren't inspired by any popular character and the comparison just feel like my "original idea" (i know nothing is original, just a lack of a better word) just didn't matter anymore because a popular character "looks" like mine. Like all my hard work for the concept of my characters went down the drain just because of one popular character.

this certainly is tough to go through as an artist. even though we can never be truly "original" this shouldn't stop us from continuing to create! we still deserve to make our mark and express ourselves even if we may be doing a similar idea to something else. art is a communal human experience and it's only natural we swap ideas and gain inspiration for each other. continue to grow and make art!! wishing you the best

When I got into the dnd hobby, my very first character was a wizlock (wizard warlock). After a few years I had gotten into Dragon Age Inquisition and found that my wizlock and the character Dorian can be compared to eachother if I dare cut my wizlock's hair and shave his beard a bit...months later, he was compared to Dorian though artists in discord as an off-hand comment. This has put me in a bit of a stand still state when wanting to draw or post my wizlock (I truly dont wish to change his design because I believe he's perfect the way he is) but this lingering feeling of being compared to DA:I again and again keeps me from a lot of things I wish to try out visually and thematically for my oc. My wizlock is by far the only oc that hasn't been worked on much visually and it kinda sucks. I dont enjoy the comparisons mainly because my goal is to take my art, characters and their stories even further by making films and tv shows and go about developing them throughout several years. My wizlock has been made over a span of 6 years in counting, and at that moment, it felt like all those years of work had been reduced. I'm aware of the notion of nothing is truly original, but I feel it still stands.

I feel like it depends on how it's worded; "That looks like this character" takes away from the artist that made the oc An example is a friends winged oc got compared to Hawks bc he had red wings similarly to Hawks but that was as far as the similarities went bc the oc was for Spiderman not MHA "Is that -character-?" better but only if they didn't know then didn't fight the artist on it after learning it was an oc "Your character could be added to -this source of media-" If the artist likes said media I can see this as a good thing bc it reads as the viewer seeing the similarities

I compared this one artist to another, it was meant as a compliment but I think the artist took it in a bad way? It was one of my favourite artist growing up and the detail they put into their work inspired me a lot. I think I could have worded it better and maybe not compare? Idk I think this stuff is complicated and I think it’s up to the person who’s art is compared for whether if it’s a good or bad thing. My art has been compared before, but I personally took it as a compliment as I looked up to that artist a lot, I think it helped me push my art style in a different direction from that already established art style. A drawing I did once was compared to a friend of mines art and they said it in a very heartless way. It made me really sad since it wasn’t even my character and the reason I drew this character was because that friend brought me into the fandom. Anyways that’s my two thoughts on this topic and I don’t know how to articulate my opinion in a meaningful way. It’s all up to how they say it, like tone of voice (or in this context, comments)

Honestly, i just go "lol you're right" and continue with my life I don´t expect everyone to guess if something offends me or not (as long as they are being respectful to others and to me), at some point a lot of people get scared of comenting because they don´t know how the person may react, and they end up not commenting at all, and I want them to leave a comment, I myself don't comment a lot on various posts because of that. Now there's a huge difference between "omg, it reminds me of insert character name " and "you just copied this character" But I get where the discomfort comes from, in the end, every artist chooses how to connect with their audiences.

These compliments can include if the expression of the emotion feels like it is well expressed, if you like the overall color scheme, if the perspective or composition looks really impressive to you, if you are in love with how a certain part of the artists style works (inking, shading, proportions etc.). You can also try and guess what is your takeaway, from how the OC‘s personality comes across for your and possibly start of a wonderful, discussion. Of course putting in the work to learn all those things in english isn‘t necessarily mandatory, but I think it is beneficial for the connection you create as a viewer with the artist, that goes far beyond pure comparison. I have compared an OC to a popular character, but instead of saying this looks like, I prefer to say „this gives me similar vibes to…“ and then explain why, this way the artist can see the reasoning behind it and correct me if needed. Just a snippet of my own thoughts.

thank you so much for sharing!! I think your way of commenting is super insightful and respectful to the artist and can lead to such great deeper discussion instead of mere comparison.

Hi!! I really like your artwork and how it looks and I was wondering if you can make a video about how you color in Clip studio paint and the brushes and methods you use.

In the past I’ve accidentally destroyed all excitement, motivation, and inspiration my friend had with a character because I compared it to another more popular character.

OOF that's rough... maybe suggesting more gentle comparisons in the future! like saying " this looks similar to this character," "i know your character is your own, maybe you would be interested in this similar character for inspiration!" I hope your friend doesn't give up the design tho!! they still created something, which is valuable in itself :)

@@sketchesofshay He did give up on the design but I think it was just something I had to learn from yk? It sucks bad, but I know not to do that anymore. And when I do make comparisons, I always just point out individual things I like instead of an actual comparison

The average person isn't going to know anything. Not about art, and not about you. You've got to learn to be okay with that. If the basic soccer mom isn't going to know, then let it go. Artistically speaking, you ain't got time for that.

if I'm being honest i never see anyone making comparisons on art stuff. but I'm on the training side of art, i don't watch art KZbinrs who entertain instead of teach art...
