Great breakdown! I'm one of the few people who DID know about Johnny Furphy before this season. I'm an Australian hoops nerd who has been watching Furphy's progress closely for the past few years. Furphy has looked amazing the past few years playing for the NBA Academy here in Australia. It's the same place Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels played. My NBA comparison for Furphy was always a young Gordon Hayward/young Joe Ingles hybrid. Unfortunately, NBA fans never got to see *YOUNG* Joe Ingles.... but he was a 6'8" bouncy SG/SF with LOOOONG arms, a good passer, good outside shooting, disruptive defensively, and would dunk on everyone that wasn't paying attention. Ingles was legit athletically, and dunked everything. 😅😅 Sounds like Furphy to me! I think Furphy definitely has shades of Cam Johnson and Trey Murphy too. Those are very valid comps as well. I don't think Furphy will ever be the defender Murphy III is.... but I agree he has the tools to be an above average NBA defender at the very least. The most important part you stated was Furphy's ascension and progression over the past two years. Furphy turned a lot of heads at the NBA Global Academy Games in Atlanta.... and he's definitely the classic "late-bloomer". He's improved DRASTICALLY every year since he was 15, and there's no reason to think that won't continue. One thing I will add that a lot of Americans won't know, or will overlook: Furphy grew up playing Australian Rules Football, which means he's tough as shit! If you don't know what Australian Rules Football is.... do a KZbin search! It's not like American Football with all the padding, time-outs, and running over the sidelines to avoid being tackled. It's no joke in terms of toughness required. Furphy might LOOK like a teen heartthrob from a boy band..... but he's as tough as nails, and nothing that can happen on a basketball court will phase him after playing "footy" his whole life. 😅😅 He'll be a Lottery pick in this weaker draft class. I'm VERY confident of that. Great video brother!

What a great pick by the Pacers. He is gonna be a good NBA player...3 point shooting, backdoor cut, skill of finishing at the rim. He will learn how to much better defend after joining the team.

Im Aussie so this may come across a little bias but it os not intention. My question being is how and why so many coming from abroad to play in college or NBA rookie lists where thtir basic fundamentals are superior to native USA as it being your national sport. This being said im wondering about the training camps etc that are available to the US junior player as they come through the ranks. What i have noticed especially inside college and G League is the full intent on defence and shut out mentality with minimal flair for being natural passes of the ball. Majority of all can shoot and dribble. But the defence and passing sucks. Not trying to offend but would be interested on thoughts

You're right. Fundamentally sound players exceed in the NBA, because a lot of the iso ball stuff that works in AAU doesn't work in the NBA. The talent and skill level in the NBA is insane, so it's the smarter, unselfish players that really set themselves apart. The fundamentals still work. Look at the success of a young team like OKC. SGA is their OLDEST key player, and he's only 25! OKC are good because they share the ball, play defense, pass to the open player, they're VERY well coached, and there are no egos amongst the players. Sam Presti has done a masterful job of drafting (and acquiring) ONLY good human beings, who are unselfish, don't have an ego, and ALL of them need to have the fundamental skills of shooting, passing, and dribbling. Even their big men - Chet, J-Will, and Kenrich Williams - can pass, dribble, shoot. How do you guard a team when ALL FIVE guys can Dribble, pass, shoot.... AND they are all unselfish?

He’ll be borderline lottery this year partially due to the weak draft class. He’ll be better in the nba because of the spacing, but he has a few more years of getting stronger ahead of him before he’ll be ready to be a starter. he’s been dealing with shin splints all season and I think that’s why we haven’t seen his full athletic potential in college yet. I can see him staying another year in college tho bc it’s been a tough move away from Australia and he’s just now settling in. Plus the bill self guards tend to stay an extra year past

Yeah I don't see it either. He's an NBA athlete but I don't see 90th percentile. I also don't see the Trey Murphy comp or the Franz Wagner comp. Both if those guys were big time college defenders. Cam Johnson is probably like a high end comp too.
