For years. People were saying 'No cares about Avatar' 'who cares' 'no cultural relevance' etc. The amount of hate Avatar gets. Avatar 2 opening weekend should have been on par or LESS then Avatar 1. The fact that it opened MORE then the first, should be treated as a win. But some people have a personal vendetta against Avatar (for some reason?) and will still call it a flop.

Saw the film Friday night, theater in IMAX/EPIC was almost full, it was a great film! the 3d and high frame rate made me dizzy at times, but worth it...I honestly liked the 1st movie better because of the initial world building and the chemistry between Jake and Neytiri, which i wished they both had more screen time together in the second film, but I see where James Cameron is trying to focus the next films on his family/kids.. 7/10 -8/10 for me,, visually 10/10 without a doubt. I dont understand why all the 'hate' that people give to this franchise.. they always say the story has been done before, but almost all movies now-a-days has been 'done',, just the execution of the films differ.. same with books, games, everything in life is a repeat or has some sort of basic story line,, people just want to complain just to complain.

Comparing Avatar 2’s opening weekend to the first movie’s doesn’t really work. When the first movie came out, no one really knew or cared about what the movie was, and had no idea the sort of spectacle it would be. So its opening was comparatively poor. However, thanks largely to its at-that-point-revolutionary effects, the movie had ludicrously long legs. To adequately compare the two films we have to compare the drop-offs over the next 6 weeks. If Avatar 2 goes down like most modern event films, it will be a financial disappointment compared to its predecessor. However, if it captures audiences the way the first one did and has similarly-long legs, it might even surpass it.

Movie is a solid 8.5. It does advance the story, so those folks saying it doesn't do that I want to know did you walk in halfway through after paying to watch "Violent Night" then getting bored there and sneaking into Avatar 2? Because the story is there. Those complaining folks do Stephen Lang's performance a major disservice... It also has legs. Forget listening to folks on KZbin. Just about everyone I know who I have encountered either at work, shopping, or in my circle of friends is seeing this during the Christmas weekend. The Kids might go to "Puss and Boots 2", but FAMILIES OF ALL AGES as groups of people are seeing Avatar 2. As for "adjusting for inflation", TOP GUN MAVERICK got the same bump this year too. BUT YOU DO NOT HEAR THAT FROM "KZbin CRITICS". Because TGM is their fall back point. ALL HAIL THE HOLY CRUISE! THE FILM THAT REDEFINED CINEMA FOR A GENERATION according to those folks. But seriously, inflation does not work as an excuse either because again, TOP GUN MAVERICK GOT THE SAME BOOST. So understand, all this posturing right now is LAUGHABLE. Let me see the end of year tally (3 weeks in), and then we can compare box office forecasts. But to the folks who want this to fail - well, people in Hell want Ice Water, and they don't get that either... so just stop already.

The first avatar had legs but its opening weekend was nothing spectacular. This sequel should have been able to benefit from the original's fame. It didn't do that, at least not to the extend we have come to expect from Marvel movies. But at the same time, I think the casual fanbase of Avatar is still out there and word of mouth will also be a major factor. Casual fans don't feel the need to go to the opening weekend. So it's too early to tell. This could end up just breaking even or it could become a top 3 film of all time.

something to keep in mind, ticket price inflation. A regular ticket price in 2009 was $7.5, as of this summer that was $11, a 46% increase, so if you apply that to Avatar's opening weekend, the original would have opened at approx $112.5M in today's box office value, so that makes the "double the original" not quite so accurate (sorry, I'm a math nerd). We should also keep in mind snowstorms may effect box office in various parts of the country, here in Wa, you get 2 inches on the ground and everyone stays the F home. I know that for me personally, if I wanted to see it in imax at the theater closest to where I work, my ONLY option would be the 10:20 am, there are no showtimes that start after I get off work (8pm) that would give me enough time to get to the theater without sprinting from a place to the next, and the 2:40p screening wouldn't get out until well after 6pm, my call time for work the holiday performance I'm in is 5:30. In previous years there were screenings of Star Wars movies that started late enough that my show's cast could go after we were dismissed for the night, we don't have that option this time without settling for a standard screen.

I was at the theater on Friday .this wat i make of the movie, this movie first of all touches different ages, the young, parents, and the Gen Z were all catered for, the other thing i noticed it has a feel of terminator to it, and titanic what a way for a director to leave a mark on film, then there comes the twists every one must have seen this at the end of the movie.then the element of blood is thicker than water come in, monkey kid saves his done from drowning. All in all this movie was great its a classic already for me, cant imagine part 3.

My local theater has one imax screen. There’s only so many times it can show in a day on it. I think that really is a big factor. Edit: I just checked for another imax 3d and after Thursday there none. I’d have to drive an hour to see it. Crazy.

I can see this holding well. People who aren't even big cinephiles are chatting about this movie in a way I haven't seen since Top Gun. It will have legs, but I still see it falling short of the original. Guarantee it will still be the biggest hit of 2022 and possibly of the pandemic-era (maybe not more than Spider-Man but will still clear $1 billion easily).

Avatar 2 isn't going to have the legs the first one did. The movie theater industry is completely different now compared to 2009. Movies have a MUCH shorter shelf life in theaters. Also, people will not pay the $5 surcharge for 3D movies.

No chance it hits a billion by Friday, and I'm not so sure it will do it by Sunday, either. That would be 10 days in. It took No Way Home 12 days. Regardless, it will hit a billion soon, and it's final total should be well clear of it. I find 2 billion highly unlikely. I'm thinking it'll be a close race with TGM for top movie of the year.
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
@@artisanjames182 I didn't say it wasn't doing well, just that Rob's expectations are unfounded. $18 million on first Tuesday is great. No Way Home made $20 million on it's second Tuesday, and that film took 12 days to make $1 billion worldwide. Avatar 2 is not keeping pace with No Way Home out of the gate. It may have longer legs. We'll see. But these expectations for $1 billion by Friday or Sunday aren't supported by digging into the numbers. $556 million after 5 days. How is it going to do $444 million in the next 3? No Way Home was at $587 million after a weekend, and it still took 9 more days to get that next $413 million.
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
$863 million after Sunday. The Campea crew has a lot of great insights, but box-office predictions/analysis isn't their strong suit. A few weeks ago, John said, "IDK if Wakanda forever will hit a billion," when it was clear that it wouldn't. Dr. Strange 2 didn't and Wakanda forever is only slightly ahead of that film domestically but well behind it internationally.
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
@@artisanjames182 it could. My issue was with the assertion that it would cross a billion by this past weekend.
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
I'm still thinking $2 billion is a stretch, but I'm now fairly confident Avatar 2 will dethrone TGM for highest 2022 grosser. It's made up ground with Wakanda Forever to where they are now at the same domestic total after 11 days of release. Wakanda Forever will top out probably around $440 million. Avatar 2 is surging well beyond that and should easily cross $500 million domestically, maybe even $600 million. If the domestic/international ratio holds, that could mean it ends with around $1.8 billion worldwide. It's going to be interesting to follow.
@drexeldragon1723 Жыл бұрын
@@artisanjames182 it keeps doing better and better by the day. Now outpacing No Way Home in the first weekdays of its second week. Avatar 2's domestic cume is currently about $200 million behind where No Way Home was on day 12. No Way Home finished over $800 million domestically, so if Avatar 2 continues to hold just as well, $600+ million domestically is very much on the table, and may be quite likely at this point. And this film is a 30/70 domestic/international grosser which would mean $2 billion is certainly not out of the question. I wonder how much No Way Home would've made in China. There is no doubt in my mind, that's a $2 billion dollar film with that market included.
