IMO, the best defense against potentially dangerous situations is experience and familiarity. After a 9200 mile solo, self-supported bicycle tour, through both sparsely- and densely-populated areas of the USA, my conclusion was that there’s very little danger out there. Most of the danger for women is imagined, and induced by others through “concern harassment.”

Agreed! I lot of this "perceived danger" of it being dangerous for women to hike alone comes from people who don't actually hike or backpack out in the backcountry themselves.

Thank you for all the really great advice. I love hiking alone just listening to the sounds around me. Every so often I make sure to turn around and look behind me just so I'm aware of anyone who is behind me on the trail. I'm in the UK so we don't have to worry about bears etc!

Glad you enjoyed the video. Whether you're hiking by yourself or even in a group, it's always important to be situationally aware of what's going on around you. Not a bad idea to stop every now and then and really take a look around to see what's going on besides what's ahead of you on trail.

Well, maybe one more thing. Look into insurance that will cover you in a rescue situation. Something like CALSTAR. I think it's about $60.00 a year and will cover air rescue... I think there is a person on KZbin who is disputing a $60,000. bill from her lifeflight rescue. The dispute, I believe is with Garmin.

Yes! If you have a Garmin device, you also have the option to opt into the SAR 100 Search and Rescue Insurance Annual Plan for an additional $39.95/year. This optional insurance plan offers financial reimbursement for qualified search and rescue related expenses. SAR insurance coverage requires the use of a supported device with an active subscription to report an emergency that warrants search and rescue to the Garmin ResponseSM center (such as triggering an SOS on your inReach® device)1. Reimbursement of covered rescue expenses is based on the selected SAR insurance plan. For Example: the SAR 100 and SAR High Risk insurance plan includes up to $100,000 USD in reimbursement for covered rescue costs and a $5,000 USD accidental death and dismemberment benefit. The SAR High Risk plan also includes coverage for qualified rescue expenses resulting from participation in specified activities that are not covered by the SAR 100 plan2.

The only thing is I'm not a man or dad and I don't have the experience of being a dad. I can only teach from my own experience and my skillset, which is a woman who wants to feel confident with getting out in the backcountry by herself. I know her because I AM HER. :) A lot of the hiking and backpacking content I create can be helpful for anyone who wants to get out on trail safely, comfortably and have more fun while they're out there, both men and women. It’s not the worst idea if you’re already a carrier. Just note that not every hiking area permits it even if you have a carrying permit. Make sure to look up what the rules are in the areas you’ll be hiking.

As a woman, I disagree. In my video, I mentioned how after hiking and backpacking several hundred, maybe even 1,000s of miles at this point, I feel safer hiking in the backcountry alone. I don't ever really feel safe hiking in a city alone, but I still do it. Maybe watch the video again?
