As a spokesperson for the right to despair movement we take umbrage with the idea that people should have control of the things that they buy; to quote the entirely real Agent K from the documentary series “Men in Black”: “a person is smart. People are dumb, panicky animals, and you know it” Given unlimited control of their own belongings people would descend into chaos, and for what benefit? Fun? Creativity? Self-actualization? No, friends, this way lies madness. Stand up for your right to despair and say yes to firmware lockdowns. It’s in the game.

That started going downhill in the early 2000's, to the point that I strongly recommend NOT getting a HP to anyone that asks at work or for personal use. I think the next XL will look a lot like the current CORE One, but don’t expect the price to drop that much. The reason the CORE price came out relatively low (compared to the mk4) was all the shared components. I think they might try to spread the cost out by making an intermediate model. They might end up using a portion of the segmented heating bed and limit the tool changing heads to just 2. This means they don’t need 2x the controller boards and a much more reasonable power supply.

It's not just a good printer for 'newbies'. It's a good printer for anyone who doesn't want to spend hours and hours tinkering with it but just wants to 3d-print stuff. They helped set a standard that forced companies like Creality to up their game instead of, like you mentioned, release dozens of half-working devices you need to babysit to even get a result. They made 3D-printing consumer-friendly. They made multicolor printing consumer-friendly. And now they've shot themselves in the foot. With a bazooka.

@NTVN-Alex12 күн бұрын
@@budwittman4907 so he would be a 'newbie' in that regard. It would be quite easy to fix if you know how the printer is working. I agree. I always compare 3D printing fans to car lovers. You have people who love to get their hands dirty, take engines apart, mount different wheels and what not. Their car is more IN the garage than it is out riding. And you have the people that love to drive their car. They know roughly how the inners work but they are more in love with the driving experience and moving through the landscape rather than tinker with the engine all day. It's the same with 3D printers. You have people who love to build them, print 2001 add-ons for them, make them 20mm/s faster, etcetera. And there are those people who want to use it to create the best prints. They want to design stuff and 3D print things they could never do before 3D printing. For the 2nd category, Bambu has been an insane brand. Following to your example, I should actually extend my car analogy with a 3rd category of people: the people who just use a car. They don't care about the car or the technology or the driving experience. The car is there to get them from A to B, to get to work, to bring the kids to school and so on. They don't know about the technology and they don't care. It just has to work. In the 3D-world, these folks just want to download parts from Makerworld, Thingiverse and such, print them and use them. Period. I guess there is no good solution for these folks yet. 3D printing is not that far in its development so it is mass consumer friendly. It simply hasn't reached that level of maturity yet. Maybe it never will. Not unlike CNC, it may never leave the workshop. It may enter smaller shops when the technology becomes more affordable, but it will never end up on the desk of a normal user.
@JoshFisher56712 күн бұрын
Rule of thumb, don't take away features that have been available since your product launched. Bambu chose to route all traffic through AWS. They don't like paying for API callls from Home Assistant or a Panda touch so they picked a fight with the internet. How's that working out? In under 24 hours the cert and private keys have been extracted and Bambu Connect has been reverse engineered using the Mac OS dmg install file and maybe 29 lines of Python. This will be a cat and mouse game and Bambu will lose. Don't pick a fight with the internet. Name one company that did where it ended well. Bambu may have made 3D printing "plug and play" but they did so by taking open source software like Prusa slicer, making it closed source, then open source EXCEPT 2 network dll files so you need their plugin, which won't work with other slicers like Orca. I'm sorry, but they got where they are iff the work of others. I'm not saying what they did was easy, but they didn't reinvent the wheel. The X1 was based on some other open source firmware also. Now the P1/A1 use an ESP32-S3 which is crazy. Still, this won't end well for Bambu. You can upload sliced files to the SD card using SFTP so now I'll just have to get up and press a few buttons Was my first printer a huge learning curve? Yes, but I would rather figure out slicer and filament slicer settings myself then be in such a closed down crappy cloud ecosystem. Honestly, almost every printer I've owned has been pretty solid once the slicer and filament settings are dialed in and that's 50 percent of what Bambu does if you buy their filaments.

What people need to understand is, in my opinion, Bambu is taking the inkjet printer route. You mentioned how it's insane how cheap their machines are and how good quality they are, exactly. Take into account their affordable hardware, their affordable filament, their great ecosystem in general and their Maker World which gives you FREE STUFF without generating ANY PROFIT for the company and you start to see the picture. They're selling the machines at break even or a loss, so they're not "making their money at the point of sale" with the direct intention of making their money by sucking people into their Maker World using points to get free stuff, and once everyone is on the hook, they lock everything down, force use of their filament ONLY, their parts ONLY and their Maker World ONLY and potentially a tiered monthly/annual subscription to continue using the machine you paid money for all while simultaneously harvesting all of your printed files via their cloud and effectively taking ownership of your uploaded STL's.

@@ozemale6t928 - I've been shocked that so many Bambu Lab customers have been OK with Bambu's coercion to use their cloud based print server, since the start of Bambu Lab. I suppose the people who are attracted to the closed wall, pretty, Apple-ish, "it just works" products are, on average, more accustomed to being owned by their products and have very low expectations for privacy and security. The Bambu print server looked evil to me from day one and I was never interested in buying ANY Bambu Lab product. I opted out of their entire corporate ethos and philosophy. Hopefully you got your X1C offline before Bambu pushed a firmware update that will brick it if unable to phone home to Bambu. I know that sounds nuts to many people but those are some of the same people who said I was nuts when I warned that Bambu Lab will lock down their proprietary system and prevent their customers from using any non-Bambu products, and now they can't print from OrcaSlicer. A company that would prevent its customers from freely using the products they bought seems like a company that would time bomb their firmware before announcing that they were locking down their products to restrict or eliminate customer choice. No doubt white hat hackers are already working on installing Klipper on Bambu Lab motherboards. If that's not practical (Bambu designed it to discourage jail breaking), then someone will make drop-in Klipper motherboards for all Bambu Lab printers. I've read that Bambu motherboards barely have the computational ability needed to run, so a new mobo could be a nice Klipper upgrade.

Both things should happen, Bambu and all printers should definitely have a strong auth flow for any network connectivity with the printer, this is why all my 3D printers are on their own network still and will never be allowed even into the wider IOT network of my house. But they should also do this using open protocols that anyone can adopt. Pairing two or more devices together relatively securely with minimal user interaction is more or less a solved problem already. Heck OIDC device flow can be easily used for this, they can even keep the Bambu account requirement if they want.

This entire situation is so ridiculously amateurish, I don't even know what to say. There are a multitude of ways to actually improve their security: an Oauth API, API tokens, token/PIN exchange on the printer's display and/or a QR-code, an actual LAN-only mode, manual certificate exchange, ... I would have recommend the P1S (the printer i was going to get) to most people I know if than wanted to prin more than PLA. But 2025 is where all the printer companies are going to aiming for a P1S style printer. I'd might still recommend an A1 if they just want a good printer to start with. So I almost got banned on a community for rasing the Flag on Cricut when they tried to lock down using the machine. It still would have been worth it because it was not 'drama' nor was i not drama baiting. It was literally the company putting a paywall over using the machine past 20 times per month because they forced user to only run it through the Cloud. Bambu has not gone that far yet but if you are looking to paywall farm set ups that's one step closer. Now the printer I have is the K2 Plus. I knew going in there was likely firmware updates and I know about their past machines. But I also know they are talking with the RIFD filament project and are willing to work with other companies (CoPrint is one). Alllll the printer companies have a chance now to catch up to Bambu. I'll keep using my Cricut but I will NEVER recocomend Cricut to anyone, I'm full 'the competition' now. ;) I got a Cricut Maker because it had the options I wanted for cutting things and was proven in 2019. People have been calling them the apple of 3d printers. Closing down is exactly what apple does.

But to be clear, Apple has always been closed down.

@andrewhumphrey6863 Hoping you're making the clarification to give Apple credit for being upfront about being a closed ecosystem, while Bambu was playing "just the tip"

@@RubixB0y Just clarifying, I was trying to point out that Apple’s ecosystem has always been closed, for better or worse. That is all.

@@andrewhumphrey6863 maybe since about 2000 but Steve Wozniak machines were always open and havkable.

@ That’s a fair point-early Apple machines like the Apple II were definitely more open and mod-able. It was a hobbies machine then. I was referring more to the era, in the late 80s-90s I might add, starting with the iPod and moving into the tightly integrated hardware/software ecosystem we see today. The shift has been gradual but consistent since then.

I love the fact that they changed what their TOS said, removed the archiving of what it said before and are gaslighting people saying it never said that 🤣

This is ultimately why I decided to spend the time building my Voron instead of taking the easy route and buying a Bambu... Smelled this coming a mile away. The same thing has happened in the past with smart home devices that do not run using open source protocols.
