As someone had said earlier, if you attend engineering school for the money or thinking that once you get the degree everything will be smooth sailing. WRONG! You will suffer if you think that way! There will be no short cuts to becoming a competent engineer! You gotta study hard and realize the CONCEPTS. You can still have social life and fun, just depends on how you prioritize. I've got couple classmates that cheat and tried to take shortcuts. After they graduated, they didn't know SH1T. So if you love engineering, it's definitely FUN and fulfilling =) I for one, feel accomplished and smart =D

lol you're joking right? Driverless vehicles have been in operation for years (Google driverless vehicles, Michigan testing, Uber testing, etc), not to mention true tech for decades. Look up driverless vehicle challenges, now evolved to the DARPA challenges. And if it's uncertain to you what the benefits are, just google mate. 99.99% of all crashes are human driver error. Sure computer code errors exist, but no where in the capacity of human error. Commercial pilots don't even fly anymore, it's entirely automated. Computer code does not get distracted, drowsy, confused, it is never inexperienced or old with poor vision, overwhelmed by workload, etc. Driverless vehicles are the future, and it's happening right now. Wake up.

If it wasn't for the stability of the career could you see yourself doing something else?
@thegrandmuftiofwakanda7 жыл бұрын
+108342382752399615424 Today, people think that Hilary and Trump being the only candidates available for the position of most powerful person on earth is a tragic state of affairs. I would argue that just one disheartened aspiring engineer is 100, if not 1000, times more of a tragedy. Engineers (and Scientists) are the foundation, core, backbone, lock, stock and barrel of who we now are. We are the creators of true wealth, the eliminators of misery and suffering. We create the instruments and opportunities to alleviate human suffering through initiatives such renewable energy, low cost satellite communications to connect emerging economies to the world and systems to bring clean water and medicine to children that are dying. We empower developing nations to lift themselves out of poverty through extending our hand and inviting them to join us in our pursuits. Sadly, as things are, a lawyer that breaks down the legal red tape of selling, for example, an innovative low cost device to monitor African children for ebola, will earn 100 times the amount of those that created it, despite only having invested one tenth of the time and one thousandth of the intellect. It is here that people become disillusioned beyond repair. In the US and Europe, house prices are rising at several multiples higher than the amount of money that someone in their 20s can save in a year. Fledgling engineers easily have the intellect to do the job of a lawyer or politician, but they can't. Our brains our not wired to be parasitic and useless. We have a drive to understand things and that drive that can not be repressed. We have to create things. We have to be useful. Or we fall into a coma and die. It is this attribute of us that is being abused. It is this that is destroying fledgling engineers and scientists inside. The only advice I can offer is study hard, and try working for a few start ups. Do not spend too much of your time with big tech companies. If you can create a start up of your own, even better. Be prepared to have to take up some kind of political stance to protect the value of your intellect. Be responsible with the money you earn, by which I mean don't be boring. Live a life. Drink expensive cocktails from time to time. But make sure you accumulate significant net savings gain each month. You'll need it to keep up with the property market and guard against any periods of unemployment (and no matter how good you are, they WILL come, because remember, it is not people like you who are running the show right now). In summary, unless there is a global political revolution in our favour, people with real intellect, creators of true wealth, will always have little hope. But, I wish you all well and hope you are able to mitigate these problems as best as you can. The advice I have provided will help with that, I hope.

The part about not having a social life would be what would kill me. Humans are a social species. We need interaction with other people, even if its just a few people to be healthy. Maybe I won't be considered as smart as other people for putting my family and friends before my work, but its worth it. I don't mean you need to go to parties to fill this need. But the thought of going 12-16 hours a day working non-stop sounds like Hell to me. I don't understand why an engineer wouldn't consider it a major loss to their lives.

Does it change in College, like have other people had math just start clicking and they're completely understanding it? Do I actually have a chance?
@kuiperbelt1179 жыл бұрын
Yes, one of our guys is in college studying Mechanical engineering and minoring in Physics. He got exempt from Calc 101 and Physics 101. AP tests helps you grasp the concept of college courses in High School and get you exempt if you study hard. so learn as much as you can!

@Czecher_9 жыл бұрын
Well mostly I just do the homework instead of looking it up online or looking at someone else's work. That was the biggest thing for me. Plus I review what I got wrong on quizzes and homework. When doing homework it is best to understand how things relate, rather than just memorizing. So an easy example of that would be understanding why the derivative of velocity is acceleration instead of just memorizing that it is. Hope that helps.

I am not saying this applies to ALL engineers but the ones I have come across, have all been one of the most conceited and self-absorbed people I have ever met. If I tell a engineer my major, they smirk or laugh and then make me listen to some speech on how there is NO WAY I have more work than them and how you have to be smarter than average to ever graduate in engineering. Maybe I don't need to look at the same problem for 12 hours straight with five people, but other majors are hard just in different ways. An Engineer is not smarter than say a English major, they are smart in their own fields and in their own ways. The smartest people admit to ignorance.

I'm a first year engineering student and I completely agree with you. We, engineering students, are quite an ignorant bunch! We tend to show off our degree like it is the god of all degrees lol. I actually know quite a few of my friends that are not in engineering studying lifesci, business, comp sci..ect and they seem quite happy. Yes, an engineering degree like other people said is really worth it and and can open many other doors if you dont want to be an engineer after graduation, But just like you said, people in their own respective fields are smart in their own ways. i mean, we need engineers to build infrastructures, but at the same time we also need doctors to save people's life, historians to preserve our past histories, buisness people to help manage our economies..etc. So in essence, every field is important in their own ways. FYI, my english and communication skills are crap. So if i had to study English, I would fail .
@patricklongshanks3789 жыл бұрын
There is something to be said of the douchie/arrogant personality that pervades engineering culture. I think it stems from the fact that a lot of engineering students are socially retarded. They never work on their social skills and they rationalize it by declaring to everyone, implicitly or explicitly, that they are smarter and more important than you. This self-centered tendency can not serve them or anyone else well in the marketplace where in the division of labor you are bound to have to communicate with non-engineers. They're compensating for their insecurities with arrogance and it is LAME.
@itsvnessa34759 жыл бұрын
xihai luo I completely agree with you. We do tend to "show off our degree like it is the god of all degrees." It is because we do work harder than most other majors as the guy in this video is saying. Engineers will be successful because we work so hard with our minds and we know that all the hard work will pay off in the end. We won't have a hard time searching for a job as the other degree counterparts. But engineers do need to see that they need to care about the other majors/careers. Just as you said we need doctors, historians, and business people to keep our species going as well. As lame as it will sound, but we all need to work together. Because nobody will go far with a high ego and being selfish. We can't all just hang out with engineers only because how else would our ideas, our success, our inventions spread throughout the rest of the world.

When I first looked at your video title, I instantly questioned myself as an engineer student. But then when I read your description, it just makes me burst my laugh. What a day!
