We farmed with a FMC Sidewinder 180 tiller. It was 15 feet wide, 3 point mounted to a John Deere 4630. We modified a John Deere 7000 planter, added gooseneck hitch to it and welded a pull hitch to the top of the sidewinder. That way, we tilled and planted 6 row corn; 30" wide. And yes, we did till a few gardens with it!

The amount of moisture under the mulched sections is impressive. Out west we struggle with keeping enough water in the garden, but this illustrates the huge benefit to mulching in that regard, and as a result temperature as well.

Exactly! Mulch helps out with more than moisture… it keeps the soil cool and the plants actively growing/fruiting longer (from being cooler/less stressed) AND enables them to keep absorbing nutrients longer due to the cooler temps. The soil being more moist is due to two things. 1 the water can’t just evaporate as quickly and 2 the plants need less water due to the cooler temps. The soil life will be feeding on the mulch as well. Just… it is not good to till it in. It will suck the nitrogen out of the soil for a while in order for it to break down.

I used to have larger tractors so all my stuff is for bigger tractors I have a 7 foot and I run it with my 2025r. No problem. Also have a 7 foot blade as well have had no problem with either. Love your channel

The 3046 and 6ft tiller did a great job. I like to purchase larger attachments for my tractor, then if I upgrade to a bigger tractor then the same attachments will also work with it.

@@ralphpezda6523 So far not too big of a problem, I have larger chipper, it will occasionally stall the tractor if I put in the maximum size branches (6") . I have a 5ft tiller and used it today in some very wet spots, it tilled though the heavy wet soil without much noticeable drop in RPM.

I got a good deal on used implements. 40 in tiller, 48 in brush hog, 7 ft angle blade, 40 in box blade, three point boom pole, three point 2 in receiver hitch, middle buster and winch pole for the receiver hitch, one gang bottom plow, and 48 in disc harrow. Perfect for my JD 1023E. The equipment is old but in mostly new condition, it just sat behind someone's barn for 20 years. The only wore out piece is the harrow but I just got new discs for the front. $2500 for all of it and that included an old Kubota B7100D with a knocking motor. Being in Florida I got my garden started in March, bone dry so I was irrigating to get my seed to sprout. Then it rained for a week, 8in and I forgot to shovel out my drain channels. Then I got sick, now the grass is waist high. Anyone need any hay? Time to try again. The grass would wrap up in my tiller so I am going to fix the harrow and disc it all under. .

We run a 755 with a 5' tiller with bedding attachment. Makes a one and done in good conditions two passes and a beautiful raised bed.

I started with a walk behind for about 17 yrs. It was frustrating to get a good decent till job. In comes me doing my research and finding this channel. I purchased a 1025 r with the 4 ft tiller. I love my tiller. I am at the crossroads of looking at a bigger tractor as it’s hard to find attachments to do the hay field.

Yea, 1025r not big enough for serious hay work…as we showed in several videos. If you keep your 1025r, you could look at larger older tractor for hay work. Say Oliver 1650/1655, or Deere 4020.

The tiller projects are a great way to have a fun day when all goes well. Loved the calls to do that this year. Getting to the jobs can be an adventure too when they are a ways off. I am so old school; use a moldboard plow first then follow with a disc or tiller. Allows a better turn over of the soil and increases aeration. Most rear tillers, if properly sized, do not clear the tire tracks. The ones that can be or are offset to one side, in my opinion, are the best for most users. You can wipe out one set of tire tracks while keeping the tires on the other side on soil yet to be tilled.

We have NO tillers which are narrower than the tractor tracks. 4’ on 1025r, 6’ on 2038r/3046r.

I have a 3025e and I use my father-in-laws 6 foot king cutter tiller. It handles it just fine. That said if I were to buy one I would get a five foot. He has a 5045e so he has more than enough power but my tractor with half the power doesn’t have any problems with it. I do live in Florida though so our ground is softer than most.

Got a brand new KK 60” pro tiller with gears in 2020 for $1649 for my 2025r and it’s green. It’s $2100-$2400 now. Used twice and didn’t seem to struggle. Seeing this I can’t wait to use it in September for some leveling on my yard. I got most of my attachments at the limit for my tractor because I wanted to go 2038r in 2022 but I went 740r instead and plenty happy with my 2025r.

Standard rotation tiller runs so easy throw the same size but reverse rotation behind it and that will really work the tractor

I'm happy with my little BX1880 and a 48" tiller but you have to drive slow. I also have a DR motorized tow behind tiller that I pull behind a 26 HP Craftsman lawn tractor. I guess I should say that DR will actually push that little Craftsman through the garden with those forward rotating tines. This is a great video but like you said. The more seat time the better.

Got a massey Ferguson 1742 with a 6ft tiller, runs it like butter...now my 6ft heavy duty Rotary cutter that has a gear box with a rated minimum of 135hp, my 42hp works it well, cattails bog her down a bit.

There are fender extensions available. The narrow fenders are appropriate for the narrrower tire options.

I have a Deere 3032E, 32 hp, and a 5-ft County Line tiller. The tractor and the 5-ft implements I've gotten for it do most everything I need, but if I ever get another tractor I think it'll be more like 45 or 50 hp. I looked up the specs on that larger tractor, the 8560, and was surprised to see that it has "only" 235 hp. The guy who farms my cropland has an 8335R; lower model number, but 335 hp. It's a monster. I hope he never gets mad at me -- that thing could pull my house down!

My family has an 8335R as well. The model numbers were different back then….’60’ was the series. 8 meant articulated 4wd. 5 was the relative size. Nothing to do with HP back then.

I was thinking about getting a 2038R until I seen Tim's 3046R. I know he tested the smaller tractors loaders' lift capacity, did he ever try maxing out the lift capacity on the 320R? That info is way more useful and practical than capacity at full lift height that is published.

I run a 52" (I think, it was the next up from a 48") Caroni tiller I picked up years ago from Agri-Supply on my tractors (around 25 hp). The tractors I run the tiller on handles it well. Additionally, the tiller is offset which helps because if I set the tiller up to center it is a little narrower than the rear tractor tires on my one tractor with turf tires.

Hi Tim, Bill Burkhart would disagree with you on whether a 2038r is enough machine for a 6ft tiller. He has recently posted a couple videos with his new 6ft tiller and says it works very well. I originally hesitated buying a bigger one for my machine after comments you made in an earlier video about the tillers being too big for your 1025r. But with seeing Bill's in action and his feedback when I do upgrade it will be to the 6ft tiller for my 2038r. Thanks for posting. Always good content! Cheers. -RJ

Not sure if my soil is different than others, or if my expectations of performance are different. I have used the 6' on the 2038r many times. You have likely seen it in our videos. It works fine, but in tough conditions (wet, heavy sod), it struggles. So, not really arguing with you, Bill, or anyone else. Just some thoughts and opinions. I find that working. in previously tilled gardens pulls easily, especially when soil conditions are dry. I suppose one other perspective is that when I DO get into tough tilling situations, the larger tiller makes it VERY difficult to till. Hard to go slow enough to keep tractor from bogging down. It is THOSE situations which make me want a smaller tiller. ....and I say one more time...if you are only tilling one or two small/medium gardens, why spend extra on the larger tiller? More seat time means more fun....and tillers get much more expensive as they get wider.

I have a 5ft on my 3033r and it doesn't even skip a beat in full st augustine grass. I have the power reverser trans and I have to be "A" range, 1st gear for it not to push my tractor forward when tilling in grass. I'd say a 6ft would work fine and wish I'd went with a 6ft myself. It would be easier to till closer to obstacles because I have tried to till next to a fence and it is hard trying to keep the bucket and tractor from making contact. As Tim says though, no matter what you get, you'll love it.

You should always use the right size machine for the job. Just a side note. I texted, messaged and called every compact tractor dealer in my area and none have a 3 series TLB tractor to demo. I would like to demo a machine before buying one to make sure it's going to be what I need it to do.

I went with a Titan brand tiller, because of your first rule of tillers. You were right of course, the 60” Titan has been great in the SC upstate over the last year.

@@mymorristribe Yes, it handles it fine. When I’m tilling through live sod with heavy/damp soil underneath or an area that’s not dried out enough it pulls pretty hard but take it slow in those conditions and it’ll push through it. In good tilling conditions it’s no problem at all, sod or not.

Some of the Tufline products ARE the frontier :-). I think this one is a Frontier product. I like the ones that are rebranded as Frontier. Some of the entry products are not as good…but these higher end ones are great!

I could definitely see the benefit of a larger (than the tractor wheelbase) tiller in my daughter’s back yard. Where I pulled up the shrubs a few months ago, there’s still a bit of a “trench” that makes it kind of scary to drive on, so being able to stay OFF of that but still reach over to till that area would be really nice. Wouldn’t a larger tiller also be good up next to fences and such too? I can definitely see the downsides as well, but would appreciate any insights to the logic (or lack thereof!) to my thoughts. Finally - John Deere 3038e in pretty soft, non-rocky soil. Suggestion for max size? Thanks!

Deere recommends against them. With Rimguard and wheel weights, the open station 3R feels great! The cab version is much more tipsy feeling.

Recently added 2" spacers all around to my 2019 3046R. I have rimguard and wheel weights as well as some steep hills. Even the modest 2" was a noticeable improvement. For me, the added safety outweighed the marginal axle stress increase.

All depends what you’re tilling and how heavy the tiller is. I run a 673 Deere tiller on a 3046r and in an application like this video, it’s a perfect setup. Tilling hard, packed black dirt, such as lawn prep after heavy construction equipment, the 673 will bring the 3046r to its knees in A range with loadmatch on. It got it done, but was a heck of a workout and very much felt a cylinder short. A 4066r would’ve been a better fit. Deere told me either a 673 or the 681 would work on a 3046r, but strongly recommended the 73. I’m glad I listened to them - application matters a lot with with snowblowers and tillers.

Tim I have a few issues with my 1023E tractor 1St issue- when bush hogging my 3point/cutter want stay at set point! Meaning it will drop are slowly creep down. I assume they have some sort of check valve in system that is leaking by. Wondering if this is a diy repair or need to bring to shop? If a diy could you point me to link showing the in and outs to repair. 2nd my displays panel is only showing 6.7 hours run time. Not sure if I hit a reset button/which I can’t seem to find or if it just broke. Luv ur channel wish I had the funds to purchase some of the gadgets you show on here. I’m saving for a 4’rototiller now

1023Es do not really have set point, you just lower the implement until you think it is the right height. I just watch how much the front of my bush hog is dragging and give the lever a quick pull to raise it back up a bit if it needs it. If you need precise control you have to splurge on the 1025R.

It should not ‘leak down’ quickly. If still under warranty, you should ask the dealer to look at it. If not under warranty, your only choice is to replace the valve. Unfortunately, the 1023e design doesn’t give you position control. This is one of the major reasons to upgrade to a 1025r. How many ‘real’ hours does it have? How long have you had it?

Unfortunately no funds for upgrade at this time. It’s been a sweet lil tractor. Would you have a vid or a link to one replace the valve?

7' land pride behind a L4200. I prefer to break the subsoil a bit with a 2 bottom plow, or run my Ferguson 6' jitterbug over it before tilling. Several benefits to this, including reducing bolo tine wear caused by hard ground.

For the way I would use it, the John Deere 3046R with 6 foot tiller looks like just the right machine! Could the Neighbor with the John Deere 8560 tractor and 7240 planter be more of a hobby farmer? While that tractor may be overkill in power, I can see a hobby farmer using that tractor just because it is fun! Both the planter and tractor are about 30 years old. A quick look at price seems to indicate a HIGH of about $50K for the tractor and $16K for the planter...... Likely could shop and get better price...... However that is not a lot for what that setup can do mismatched as it is!!!

You should get a much bigger tiller for Johnny X. I think I could handle it. How do I cannot handle a bigger tiller based on the horsepower, but it also can lift a heavier tiller as well.

I was looking into the 3039r . I'm refusing to go to my local dealer (middle town tractor). They put a bad tast in my mouth with the 5075e i bought there and so I went to the next closest dealer and they told me I'm not in there area so they will not sell me the tractor. I told them and my local dealer that I guess I will have to go to a different brand. Their loss on a sale.

Maybe go back and try to work it out with your local dealer? Given supply constraints, no dealer will sell out of area right now.

Service and parts department in 2019 for my 5075e was horrible and then I go back in with the filter numbers and get 2 complete sets of fuilters for the same tractors and end up with only air and oil correct fuel didn't work for my tractors. Then I looked at the numbers I gave them and matched to the filters, not even close to the same number. When I went back they gave me a fit on getting the correct ones. So I stopped to get a part for my dad's tractor and it took 45 minutes to get to the counter just to get the part and took him another 30 minutes to find the part. This guy has been working the parts counter for over 10 years. This is why I'm not going back there. The dealership that will not sell me a tractor said that alot of people came to them complaining about middle town tractor.

@@TractorTimewithTim it also runs a snow blower in the winter and has a front end loader on it we used it this month to load up tree trunks for milling into lumber and removing the stump from the ground this was a tree that had blown over

You would be better off doing wide turns and tilling every other row, continously turning to the right and not wasting time and fuel stopping, backing up, straightening out, etc., like a Zamboni in a hockey arena. You then do the row(s) you skipped in the next (same) continuous pass.

Do you use Red Diesel UK not aloud use it anymore so got Buy normal Diesel 2wks ago it was £2.04 a Litre so it Nearly $10 for US Gallon & over $11 for UK Gallon that 4.54Lts we Double USA Price Petrol cars got use E10 fuel it Makes Cars Drink Fuel if got old cars it ruin rubber Fuel Hoses
