I remember being like 11 and watching a youtube video about how Jynx is basically a blackface pokemon and I was traumatized. I was really surprised to hear that you have had personal experiences w blackface, because most blackface cases are from america, no that they don't exist elsewhere. I've never heard of anyone I know doing blackface, but there's this christmas play that's traditionally performed in my country. It's like a story from the bible and has something to do w Jesus. In it there's a character that is the 'King of Moors' and the person that plays him is in blackface. There was a controversy in christmas 2017 when this department store did a video of some of their employees as the characters from the play singing a song from it, and one employee, playing the King of the Moors was in blackface. There was a lot of backlash and the video was deleted. Many people were/are against changing the tradition of one of the performers being in blackface, which I can't understand. It's super racist, and it would literally not change the tradition at all if the blackface wasn't included. I had never even heard of the play before the controversy, probably because a) I don't celebrate christmas and b) the tradition is a big thing in an opposite part of the country from where I live in.

Like we don't do that to others please don't do it to us, give us the same respect most of us try to give. If you want to be a black person for Halloween dress up like them that's great just don't paint your skin brown. That's all we ask. People have fought, died been looked down on , ridiculed and murdered for the simple fact they had brown skin it undermines their experience.

Mr notcorry this is probably the fairest, most even handed, considerate from every body's aspect on blackface, and I thank you sincerely! I was born in 1950 I am an Australian of English origin and grew up, and am still very much a big admirer of Al Jolson, and have had conflicting views re blackface, good, bad, or otherwise with his relationship to it. With the general perception of it is well, and with both it is not clear cut, or defining all bad, or all good,or something in between. It is entirely within the discretion of the democracy of each individuals choice. There is in fact nothing legally or lawfully condemning it totally! Having said all this however I think a common sense approach has to be applied, that being even though it I feel it has been miss - interpreted, documented too much on the bad aspect, including political aspects, and general humanity ones outside of Entertainment, there is now too much confusion and complication about it, it is better to belong in the past,and not be part of modern culture, or society in General. However as viewing it as window of the past it should remain in movies etc I feel, and let individuals decide for them selves. what I try and do is separate the politics, all the stuff outside of entertainment, and keep the stuff in it, in, if you understand, We have ethnic TV stations here etc that well covers the problems of different races, which moves me considerably. I cannot change history, but there has been a lot of in balance through history and I certainly acknowledge that. Over all my appreciation for Al Jolson [Jolie] is not only because he pretended to be a darker skinned person, but so much more, If he happened to not do it, it would not have made any difference to me. You can find a lot more about him at www.jolson.org and aljolson.weebly.com, a website I have on him. In the movies The Singing Kid, Big Boy, Go into your Dance and Hallelujah I'm a Bum, he has African American people with him like Cab Calloway, and Edgar O'Conner, etc and a real dignity and respect comes through, There is others as a minstrel etc, one could read into it the not so dignified aspects, but that is in the context of the movie and the times.There is also quite a few Facebook sites on Jolson, minstrelsy etc which tries to cover it all from all angles, and some good podcasts etc via ones like Wild About Jolson. There was 2 great movies made about him in the 1940's that we are trying to get on Blu Ray with extras, from Criterion,Please everybody help us to make this possible by googling Criterion to put the Jolson story on blu-ray and take it from there. Again I am not out to say blackface is all OK and should still be done, no it has had it's day, it is past history, but that does not mean for those who want to experience it, or past Entertainment in general it should not be totally impossible!

Great video! I think it’s really important that you’ve shared this, and I agree with you, blackface is just wrong and racist in every sense. I have a question though, if I want to paint my entire body in black paint for like a piece of artwork or something, would that count as blackface? For a little more context on what I’m meaning, you know how sometimes people paint human bodies in different colours and patterns and position them in different places and whatnot for the purpose of art, that’s sorta what I’m meaning.

Glad you mentioned always sunny, i did always view it as they are meant to be the worst people. But it's also clear that it still shouldn't be acceptable, even as a humour tool against those kind of people because it's still white people using black face for humour, even against racism. They didnt say the n word even though they had a joke about one of them wanting to say the n word. They still didn't use it, because it's offensive. So really the same thing should be followed with blackface. I'm white so honestly my opinion doesn't matter on it but i dont think those shows like always sunny and tropic thunder should be seen as completely awful, but that it shouldnt even be used like that now. We are past even those jokes now and talking about it should be enough to mock blackface, without a white person doing it, unless it was absolutely necessary to a dramatic role about a racist for example, not comedy. Although netflix removed an episode of Community where a chinese character blacked up to play a d&d elf, and the other characters go whoa... but he was literally black, not brown, he also didnt do exaggerated features like the original blackface, except pointy elf ears. So i feel it may be different. Not sure about that one.

In the US the history of blackface is really horrible. Al Jolson appears not to have been a raging racist, but his performing in black face was an accommodation to raging racists. But recently we've had a slew of politicians who did black face in college and now seem to think it was OK. It is not. I'd be interested in your thoughts on "yellow face" (white actors portraying Asians) or "pink face" (straight male actors portraying gay men). Certainly there is a long history of LGBTQ folks playing "straight" characters - which I don't find offensive. In a complex world I'd love some simple answers - and it is simple enough to say black face is part of a truly shameful past that needs to be remembered so that it is not repeated.

but also i don't actually understand the point of blackface. i understand when people do it for a cosplay or when people make their skin a little bit darker (or brighter) than their own skin just because they like it better. but when a white person makes their skin just black it's kinda pointless, isn't it? like why???? or when a black person makes their skin just white? if you're black then you're black like if you're white then you're white, lol. it's not a big deal these days, i think. it's just a skin colour IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE

@dizdozable5 жыл бұрын
Hi, i think this comment was made in good faith, but blackface was historically used to portray extremely offensive and racist stereotypes. It's not the same as the reverse (a POC using white face makeup) because of the historical context. Also dark skin is still seen as somehow negative or less desirable in many places and cultures around the world (eg colourism), and current use of blackface can often tie into that view. I hope that helps explain it further.
@ebrehnj0hernh7975 жыл бұрын
Dizdoz oh okay, thank you!!
@oyemate86475 жыл бұрын
Dizdoz cool that you explained! But. I still dont think that we should be so obssesed with ,,not being offensive, remember black skin is seen as a bad thing’’ because it keeps this stereotype alive. Skin is just skin, people have very different skin colours and we should look deeper. Its somebodys culture that matters, not their skin ((for example many totally different culture have the same skin colour))
