This is a really important Blender video. I like how you show that Blender's sculpting is not as good as Z-Brush, and does not claim to be, but once you know how to use it, a Talented Sculptor can do work as good as in Z-Brush. Like Zach from CG Boost. He's the best Blender Sculptor I've seen. I've been trying out the new Sculpt mode just yesterday in Blender 2.82a, and it's very smooth and didn't slow down my low-end laptop at all. That's a good re-write.

I would say that there are pluses and minuses to both programs. The curve system in blender is really nice for hair, the pose brush looks great, the cloth brush to, multiple views, better shading (which comes useful only at the end, fine surfacing), instancing, the bevel for polygons, some brushes feel more smooth. The progress is impressive. Zbrush pluses are: bigger poly counts (you can extrude thousands of polygon), more robust dynameshing, a more flexible user interface (custom menus), better undo, great projection of details, better masking, clay polish, I can split high poly meshes, close holes on high poly meshes, better hard surface tools, better retopo, decimation master (you need a low static poly game mesh, one button press and you are 99 percent done). There is more, just the stuff from top of my head. There is also 3D Coat, and its cutting brush in voxel mode is the best. (crashes a lot to) Blender sculpting looks great, but Zbrush as sad in the video, is the king so far. Oh Zbrush isn't stable at all the most unstable program that I ever used, fortunately it has quick save (saving when crashing).

Martin Cireg the good thing is that blender is constantly evolving and a lot of care is being given to the sculpting tools. As someone with fair amount of experience in zbrush I won't deny its supremacy in its position (also the fact that the zbrush community is less toxic to blenderheads than their autodesk counterpart) but I firmly believe that blender is slowly but surely making its sculpting toolset very strong. Just a few days ago the 2.90 build kept its performance in sculpting with 8-9 mil polys and here is where we arrive at a big contrast in the principles that differ in both packages, blender's core principle (or atleast one of) is emphasis on clean topology. Most of the time people forget that blender has only gradually adapted to the industry's way of doing things and that although it has many similarities to it now than it did a few years ago, a core principle that still dominates the workflow in blender is this chase for clean topology. Blender definitely can improve in alot of areas but it is mindblowing for a software to do so many things and yet still be free.

@Trantor The Troll Max doesn't have sculpting tools, Maya has barely any and Cinema 4D has sculpting that is better than you would expect, but still nothing like Blender's. This is a discussion of sculpting tools in particular, not general-purpose 3D modeling. And I dare you to find any artist who can produce a hybrid 2D / 3D film like "Hero" in any single application other than Blender. I mean, fair is fair, if we're going to compare these programs based on the total feature set and not just the sculpting tools, we need to include the cel animation features - which no other 3D program has, and yet which are in demand in certain parts of the industry. Getting back to ZBrush vs. Blender, though, NOT EVERY ARTIST NEEDS A DEDICATED SCULPTING PROGRAM. Sorry for yelling. If you just need to occasionally put a few touches on a landscape or a tree with rough bark, or just add some surface details, then absolutely you don't need a $900 program, and at the same time you do need something better than the crummy tools built into Maya (I learned this while trying to add wrinkles to an elephant's trunk in that program at one point). To summarize: sculpting tools are in demand in general-purpose programs like Maya, Max, Cinema 4D, Modo and Blender. If they weren't, Autodesk et al. wouldn't be adding them to the feature set. Out of all general-purpose programs, the sculpting tools in Blender are the best, period.

@@ElleElleElleL As a ZBrush user I think you are being too harsh. Blender sculpting at this point is like ZBrush Core +. Sure it doesn't have all the features of ZBrush but it doesn't have to. I have been pleasantly surprised at what can be done and the benefit of not having to leave the package to pose, animate and render is a huge plus. Now, yes ZBrush is a beast but most people only use about 20% of the features...and usually those features are in Blender. ZBrush's advantages in my opinion are the ability to handle very large polygon counts, ZRemesher, Dynamesh and Sculptris Pro. In Blender it's just a little different workflow to accomplish what these tools do. It's really not fair comparing the 2 as they both have their "sweet spots". The great thing is that since Blender is free, anyone can download and use it. Blender fans are just excitedly optimistic about these new features and this is not much different than when ZBrush has a new release. We are lucky to have all these tools available.

Excelente video ^u^😊❤️

My 3D teacher, while a big fan of Blender becoming more of a big player, still sticks to Zbrush for high-poly sculpting. His opinion is that while Blender's sculpt mode can do a huge amount of things, it's still limited in brushes, and Blender tends to lag/crash when approaching over a million vertices. Because of that, he has recommended us to save up money to buy Zbrush in the future when we're done our studies.
@Gareathm4 жыл бұрын
I think zbrush is a valuable purchase since they have given free updates to anyone who bought a license for over a decade and it is relatively low cost compared to a lot of software. Since I do character design I find that using zbrush as my primary and first stage and then to blender to fill in the gaps is a working strategy for me.

I'm not a big 3D guru or something alike, but I surely have done little studies with over 10 million vertices and blender didn't even blink over it in sculpting mode (well, it did get slow at editing mode xD); and the fact is, I have a total of 0 GPUs and not the best CPU and so on. I guess at the end Blender is powerful although not a specialist; it won't give an enormous support over sculpting, but it won't stop the person from doing any work xD

cuz they need to sell them yearly and add a ton of tools every year for the customers. and that leads for programmer to add alot of library s to get stuff done faster and that add to the size and lower the performance to do the same thing every year. but blender codes are clean and its pure python so the codes are just mostly texts that dont need lot of space. zbrush still good on size and performance imo. autodesk is horrible at this like 3D max... in the ammount of time you need to spend to install it and run it you can just download blender and finish a model 😂

Blender is mostly written in C, with some parts written in python. The python parts basically call parts of the C code. At least, that’s what I understand from the source code :) In the 2-3 gb of ZBrush, perhaps a large parts is allocated to assets (brushes, textures, images) and documentation (images, videos?) ? But that’s true that sometimes games or apps are packed with a particular distribution of C++ or other dependencies, and that can take quite a lot of storage space.

Yeah, great video. I just don't think it's a fair comparison at all. Blender is a general, all-purpose 3D software and should be treated as such. If you compare it against most competition in this category (Maya, 3DS, C4D), Blender is actually one of the best, if not the best all-around 3D software when it comes to its sculpting capabilities. To be honest, even comparing it with ZBrush (THE ultimate sculpt software, dedicated solely for sculpting) says a lot about how far Blender is going. Imagine comparing something totally out of their league and not only that: actually being considered as an alternative without even trying to be a sculpt tool. To me sounds like some Rocky I type of thing, where Blender was never even supposed to be compared against ZBrush, but when it does, it is goes surprisingly well. Just like Rocky was never supposed to win Apollo or something. Anyway, as of today Blender is far from being ZBrush and that's fine, it's not meant to be. However, I'm confident that in the future it may be equally as good as an alternative for different types of projects and workflows, specially for indie studios and freelance artists.
