brennan is a huge autistic mood in this, coming at it with the 'I move through life trying to lock things down. Food that are good? locked down. don't need any new foods' and 'i wish that were me. if it touches your mouth and you go 'this is the same' then great! what a charmed life.' and 'i've never been cool'. 10/10 correct. also im so so sorry no one has roasted/fried a vegetable good for any of them lol

Somewhat agree. He does fit the neuro-type in a lot of ways; I relate to a lot of his behaviors, myself (not trying to imply we share the same talent, of course). I'm always wary to label others, though. If he is autistic, he seems to be doing pretty well in his special interests, which is super cool, regardless.

@@mayaenglish5424 See the thing is with Brennan there was some adventuring party where he talked about considering ADHD meds (before being put off by a misconception), and he might have mentioned being diagnosed as child (though I could be making that up or confusing him with someone else). The situation is also made more difficult because he worked at a summer camp specifically for autistic kids at least once, but didn't realize that Ayda exhibited those traits until it was pointed out. More broadly we aren't sure what his perception of neurodivergence is because he will often talk about accommodations for stimming/attention issues, yet fully seems ignorant about special interests/hyperfixations. Basically its complicated! Statements that he puts out often resonate in the community and come off as being from someone who is undiagnosed, or otherwise unaware that he is exhibiting those traits.

Tabbouleh is a great salad if you haben't tried yet. I'd also comsider looking and what specific aspect of salad you don't like (texture, taste, etc) and see about replacing and adding to fix it. Vinegraittes of all kinds can vastly change the flavor (sweet, bitter, savory, etc) and you can add stuff like avacado, mozzerlla, etc etc. I'd also tell you that vegetables don't care what they're served with, so if you need some more fat or meat or something to eat with, that also counts. You can also try eating raw veggies in other ways. I've used lettuce leaves as burger buns and to hold rolls without getting my hand greasy.

I relate to liking alot of the same staples in my diet, i dont get tired of foods very easily, and once I have something good im happy to refer back to it time and time again. And when presented with the option to try something new, if its on my dime im not interested in taking the risk when i know whats good and can have that and be happy (but also the dilemma of "am i a coward" when i dont go out of my way to get different stuff). That being said i find myself at a point in life where if someone offers me something new, in my mind im like "the worst possible thing that could happen is it tastes bad and i dont eat it anymore" so i feel more open minded in that sense. But yeah i have people in my life that try new foods and want to go out to eat at places they've never been and eat stuff they've never had, and while i admire that inherent drive and that some of the new food sounds pretty good, its never my first instinct. I'm a creature of habit at my core baby Also on the salad bit, another thing I've come to realise is that I need to be checking in on what foods taste good or bad cause my tastes have definitely changed without my realising. Been very ambivalent about salads my whole life, but over the last few years realized i love the freshness of it's taste (and i love specific salads, not all salads are equal, especially ones without tomato) and am happy to have salad with my meals (not by itself thats unappealing, although cheese on a salad makes it less of a trudge). And I went through a period where garlic bread suddenly became disgusting to eat for a while (couple years?) But now its gone back to tasting nice. So I'm in a position of wanting to be more open minded of at least trying stuff I've had before that I dont like and seeing if anything has changed, and if it hasnt then just moving on. Also oddly enough i think fruit is my medicine rather than salad? Fruit tastes nice but i do have to power through eating most fruit or end up getting through it alot more slowly than most foods. Like apples, peaches, apricots. Very sweet things, and im already not a sweet tooth so that might be part of why they're not enjoyable to eat as they are. Mixed with other stuff is not as bad. But yeah I would approach eating an apple like "it is good to eat fruit and get vitamins so I eat this with the intent of having something healthy for its own sake rather than because the taste is appealing. Gotta be hucked down."

this was a fascinating moment as someone whose favorite plate of food in the world is A Specific Salad from One Specific Restaurant. like i am fully in that Fresh Chopped Salad camp, i would sell my actual soul for the vinaigrette recipe they use to make that nectar of the gods. and also at the same the bit about locking in good foods is a Big Autism Mood and basically guides my life.

I think I am deeply blessed to have the type of brain that loves veggies. Since I was a kid I would but down a whole carrot and cucumber , washed and uncut.

I’ve learned that vegetables are pretty easy to just add on the side of meals, like I get frozen veggies and then cook them in the microwave and then air fry them crispy and it’s very good

Salad being a medicine is so true. If it's not a small side I need it with a protein and plenty of dressing.

I've never been a salad guy, but some veggies just hit different when you cook them certain ways. Stews that are more veggie than meat, even, are great. I think steamed beets deserve to be in more food just because of how sweet they are and the texture they have, they just don't go great with sauces. Raddish too; if you cut back on sauce and still want a little something to make a burger more satisfying, I feel like a couple slices of raddish can go a long way. Idk a lot of veggies are slept on outside of the general circle of leafy greens/potatoes/carrots Edit: I guess beets can't be counted into the health conversation though, at least for some people. They're pretty high in sugar for a veggie, enough that it's a concern if you have diabetes.

Salads dont have to be a chore unless you hate chopping stuff, also lettuce is a subpar base. Red cabbage, avocado, or beet greens are much better in my opinion

i relate to brennan a lot tbh. there are only two ways i can consume vegetables: steamed broccoli (preferably with cheese, rice, and chicken) or the way i was taught in my high school cooking class (make pancake batter, cut up carrots and green onions, put it in the batter, make a pancake and put soy sauce on it). but i do eat the same thing every day when given the opportunity to do so. i dont want to make shoveling calories into my food hole more difficult than it already is by having to make choices or risk eating something with a bad flavor or a bad texture

As a child my favorite meal was a Ceasar salad, bonus of there was a shirp option instead of chicken. I would remove the croutons and ask for the dressing on the side because if you dont that shit is dressing soup with bits of lettuce hidden underneath, and I hate that. My sister was "normal" and would get chicken nuggies and french fries everywhere always. We were equally weird in our eatting habits, mine was just pointed out more cuz the choices i made when following those habits was out of the norm for a 7 year old.

Salad is so variable. Some salad is medicine, some salad is pure nectar and ambrosia. You gotta have a fat in there, and some sort of protein, if you want it to be good. Fetta is a fave for me, or bocconcini. Anchovies are great, even if you're not the greatest fan, once they're dissolved in the dressing they're umami magic. Some chicken, some lamb, some prosciutto, whatever you like. I love throwing in some roasted veggies too, like sweet potato or capsicum (bell pepper), roast beetroot is AMAZING in a salad. Iceberg lettuce is useless, use something leafier and greener. Some grains or legumes will pack it out and make it heartier if you want it more filling. And herbs, you HAVE to use herbs. Fresh, dried, whatever you've got. And don't forget to season properly. You won't taste half your flavours without a little salt. Basically there's no excuse for boring salad.

A ruthless salad is, i stg, just a burger without the bun. Like you can have so many toppings and so thick a dressing that if you just threw two buns in there youd have a full on burger and I stand by them wholeheartedly (except that I can hardly ever finish them)
