The dish with leftover meat was originally not called toad in the hole. In the 1787 book A Provincial Glossary, for example, it was referred to as "meat boiled in a crust". The first mention of the word "hole", outside of Pigeons in a Hole found in the cookbook by Hannah Glasse, appeared in the 1900 publication Notes & Queries, which described the dish as a "batter-pudding with a hole in the middle containing meat".[8] Despite popular belief, there is no record of the dish ever being made with toad.[8] The origin of the name is unclear, but it may refer to the way toads wait for their prey in their burrows, making their heads visible in the earth, just like the sausages peep through the batter.[8][12] It may also derive from the "entombed animal" phenomenon of live frogs or toads being found encased in stone, which was a scientific fad of the late 18th century. You can tell who are Brits on holiday in Europe by the breakfast on their plate. If it includes beans, there is a strong chance they are British. Other nations may think it is weird, but when it comes to beans on toast, we are right and everyone else is wrong.

I remember my biology teacher telling me that most vegetarian sources of protein were incomplete in terms of the range of amino acids. But the amino acids lacking in beans were to be found in bread and vice versa. So beans on toast is a perfect combination. Whether he was right or not I don't know but I've eaten them frequently ever since.

I was told the same by my food and nutrition teacher, she said it was good for vegetarians, it was because they both contain low biological value protein and when combined it is equivalent to eating something with a high biological value protein.

When I was working in New Zealand I remember having an early breakfast with a co worker in a cafe by the Octagon in Dunedin, it was 07.30 on Waitangi day in 1992 and we'd found the only cafe open in the city. We were eating bacon, sausage, eggs, beans, fried bread, toast and tea, he asked me what the food was like in England because he'd heard it was awful, I just smirked at the irony and said it's not that bad. The only other customers were a couple of English posh boy gap year types one of whom complained loudly to the young waitress about a tea leaf in his tea and was it too much to ask that his tea be strained properly. I'm a working class bloke from Liverpool who was only a few months out of a 12 year stint in the Army and was grateful that I'd found hot food at stupid o'clock on a bank holiday so unable to help myself I explained rather bluntly exactly what I would do with his mug of tea if he didn't shut his winging trap, by the look of shock on his face I'd guess no one had ever told him off before, I think it was a lesson well learned.

As well as the ones that you mentioned, chips & gravy or chips & curry sauce. Chip butties, because you always need some carbs to go with your carbs. I've heard that bacon sandwiches aren't really a thing in the US. I'm honestly surprised that the US doesn't have our version of pigs in blankets, because you'd expect an American to have thought of wrapping a sausage in streaky bacon.

Hi Amanda, I just 'googled' this for you .. There is a tale which may explain the origin of the name, but there is nothing to tell that this is more than a local legend. Some say that Toad-in-the-Hole originates from the town of Alnmouth in Northumberland, where the local golf course was overrun with Natterjack toads. During a golf tournament, a golfer putted his ball only for it to leap back out before an angry toad raised its head, peering out of the hole that it had been sleeping in. The chef at the hotel the golfers were staying in devised a dish to resemble this humorous moment, baking sausages in batter to appear like toads poking their heads out of the golf holes -and thus Toad-in-the-Hole was born! I agree, it is YUMMY :D Best wishes for 2022, from Wales.

I do like black pudding (living not far from Bury which is a place where they are still made commercially). You can't get tripe in supermarkets these days but on markets like Oldham and Bury or from small butchers shops. HOTDOGS ! the contents of which are a complete mystery, depending on which meat processing factory floor the ingredients were swept up from or which part of the machine was "cleaned" my point is I bet we all unknowingly eat all the ingredients of haggis and black pudding, look for reconstituted or mechanically recovered on packaging, haggis and black pudding are unashamedly honest foods with nothing to hide, probably refined over many many years of hardship and extreme poverty, we are so spoiled nowadays, hands up if you have never felt that clash of your teeth against the fragment of who knows what bone or tooth that didn't quite get thoroughly processed in a hotdog or burger ? great post as always Amanda, either get drunk or do a blindfold taste test of various foods, ( would make a great vlog ) you said you like black pudding ? you will LOVE haggis, just do it ! i have found bovine eyelashes and porcine bristles in many processed foods with absolutely no mention of said follicle survivors on the packaging, not even in the fat content or calorific info type labels, what is the amount of unsaturated fat in a cows eyelash anyway ? if they gave haggis a French sounding name and sold it in posh shops and restaurants it would become world renowned as some kind of super food. oh and beans on toast with eggs was always called "angels on horseback" where i'm from, dunno why ? probably sarcasm, there was as much chance of seeing oysters on yer plate as there was of picking daffodils on the moon !

Most traditional foods have reasons for existing. Bubble and squeak not only made use of leftovers, it was a quick way of providing a cooked breakfast in the days when a fire had to be made or a wood/coal stove brought to heat to cook breakfast on. In medieval times, keeping cattle over winter was difficult, since they needed feeding, the majority would be slaughtered before winter, with the bulk being salted to get through the winter months. Pigs (as kept back then) could handle winter easily, and with lots of woodland available could be left to forage for acorns, chestnuts etc. which only arrived with fall. Since they were cheap to keep, and didn’t become a burden to feed in the winter, many families could keep a pig or two. As a source of protein, it was common to bleed pigs. Cutting the animal to get a pint or so of blood to make black pudding. - there are still cultures that do this kind of thing. I think the Massai bleed cattle, either drinking it straight from the cow, or mixing it with milk to make a sort of yoghurt.

You should try haggis. As it says in the video, it's like a peppery meatloaf. My wife reached her fifties before trying it, because she didn't like the sound of the recipe, but I talked her into trying a bit of mine once, and had to fight her away from my plate for the rest of the meal! She still doesn't like black pudding, though, which I love; but then, I'm from Yorkshire and she's from Surrey. By the same token I won't eat South-Eastern delicacies like bubble and squeek...😖

Yeah, Haggis is fantastic - the main, overriding ingredient is the oats. That give it a consistency that's pretty much somewhere between stuffing and couc-cous. Then a very large amount of black pepper and other spices giving it a realy peppery tang - much more than in black pudding. That's then combined with the deep meaty almost iron like flavours from the offal. As I said, the texture is of that of granular stuffing and the flavour if highly peppery black pudding. It's quite delicious, especially when re-fried as part of a breakfast. Because of the oats though, it's incredibly filling - a little goes a long way. definitely worth trying.

If you’re a bit unsure of trying traditional haggis because of the cuts of meat that are used, it might be an idea to try vegetarian haggis. It’s finely diced vegetables with lentils and sometimes barley with the same spices used in the traditional version. Most supermarkets sell McSween’s vegetarian haggis or there are countless recipes available online. I know that they aren’t completely the same but it will give you an idea of what the dish actually is and seeing as how we are less than three weeks from Burn’s Night and haggis, neeps (mashed swede) and tatties (mashed potatoes) are what make up a traditional Burn’s Supper, there’s no time like the present really.

When I got home I couldn’t wait to give them a try and pulled one from the box and eagerly took a bite. Imagine my surprise when I found out that these were made with real mince meat! It pays to read the packaging. Once cooked and served with a meal they were quite tasty. The funny thing is that to this day I have never seen them in store again.

The dish with leftover meat was originally not called toad in the hole. In the 1787 book A Provincial Glossary, for example, it was referred to as "meat boiled in a crust". The first mention of the word "hole", outside of Pigeons in a Hole found in the cookbook by Hannah Glasse, appeared in the 1900 publication Notes & Queries, which described the dish as a "batter-pudding with a hole in the middle containing meat". Despite popular belief, there is no record of the dish ever being made with toad. The origin of the name is unclear, but it may refer to the way toads wait for their prey in their burrows, making their heads visible in the earth, just like the sausages peep through the batter. It may also derive from the "entombed animal" phenomenon of live frogs or toads being found encased in stone, which was a scientific fad of the late 18th century.
