I saw it opening day and 100% agree that as a devout Catholic I wanted more Catholic faith "stuff" in there ie: scenes with her and the sisters at Mass, saying the rosary, praying to Jesus, etc. Show the world how we fuel our faith!
@00TheRealTC7 ай бұрын
I just saw it today! I wholeheartedly agree. There were a couple scenes in particular I wish had been either augmented, or infused with more focus on the faith: (Spoiler alerts...) When Vittoria laments to Cabrini that there isn't enough water in all the world to make her clean, I hoped Cabrini would counter that with _some_ assurance that a worthy confession would do just that, thanks to the Precious Blood of Christ poured out of his Sacred Heart on Calvary. Also: when she told her sisters to be courageous and to "trust in ourselves" for the success of their mission to America, I was like, "Nah, sis... you're putting your trust in _God_ , for you yourself can do nothing with Him." Thankfully, she did later say something to this effect, but I was disappointed it wasn't stated from the very beginning. Aside from those two iffy moments where they really could have been more intentional with the Catholicity of Cabrini's mission, I thought this was a beautiful movie and would recommend it.

@sanjivjhangiani32437 ай бұрын
@RPlavo , It's not a question of playing church, but rather that someone like Mother Cabrini and her sisters would have prayed and attended mass. It's like the scene in Henry V where the king prayed before the battle. It would have been reasonable for a man in his position to pray as fervently as he did.

I wanted more interaction between the sisters--like have a little conflict and change a couple of the scenes that seem over the top. No more than one shot of Lady Liberty is necessary. You don't want to make the same mistake of the Evangelicals with their procelytizing, heavy-handed movies. Don't give people an excuse not to see it.

@@TrueBagPipeRockYes, Nefarious was great! I just watched it this weekend. And a favorite of mine is the Mother Teresa movie the Knights of Columbus put out, which was one of the most inspiring things I have ever watched. Cabrini was excellent and had AMAZING production quality - but I would have liked more of a sense of her spirituality, and a little less of the “woman fighting against men” angle that was a central theme. That struggle alone would not make someone a Catholic Saint.

I was disappointed Iin exactly what you said. She was consumed for love of God. So maybe 2 or 3 scenes and words that were brief with prayer or dependence on God would have been fitting to her. One scene said we can only depend on ourselves. I was flabbergasted. I learned from a documentary that she consecrated her virginity at 13 perpetually to God. It doesn't have to be heavy handed but it actually hid it.

I don’t know if you watched the same movie i did friend. The whole movie was her doing charity for the love of Christ. Her cough wasn’t to show how weak she was, but how Christ used even that suffering for his work on the cross. If you think that it was simply pushing feminism because she mentioned the fact that she’s a woman, then that makes every woman to ever mention that fact a feminist. She didn’t preach her capability, she lived Christ’s. I am very conservative, and not once did I think of feminist extremism. Cabrini 9/10

Christoper, Here are my thoughts, which I posted to FB after viewing: I give it 5-stars for excellent acting/casting and very good cinematography, but here's where it falls apart and the reason I can only give it 2-stars: This movie, released on International "Women's Day" was more a commentary on "I am woman, hear me roar," than on the fact that Mother Cabrini was a WOMAN OF GOD. She would NEVER have accomplished all she did without the grace of God, without constant vigilance in prayer, fasting, penance and every other self-immolation possible. Mother Cabrini, though strong in her convictions, determined in her mission and unmoved in her fight for Italian immigrants was undoubtedly a humble soul, who understood her need for God in accomplishing her mission. Instead, this movie, made by individuals who clearly had no real understanding of her (or God's work within her), portrayed a woman who was wholly SELF-RELIANT. There isn't a SINGLE scene in the entire 2 hours and 25 minutes that shows her on her knees, fingering a Rosary or prostrated in a Church before the Holy Eucharist. She utters only two Bible verses in the entire movie. I cannot, under any circumstances recommend this movie as a genuine portrayal of a great saint. To suggest it's worthy of viewing, misleads otherwise weak individuals or Christians into thinking all they need in order to accomplish great things is a "can do" attitude. Please do not support this movie with your time, or your money.

I just went to see this movie this weekend because a dear friend encouraged me to, despite my hesitations. I regret it. I think so many are favoring it because it was done well. It wasn’t cheesy. It keeps your attention. It’s entertaining. It softens hearts towards the marginalized, and so on. But, I felt it aligned with today’s belief systems (liberalism) by making men clueless and helpless. It made white American men and the police look evil. It praised immigration (whether it be legal or illegal) as needed. I am a 52 yr old Mexican woman, a product of illegal immigration and married to a white man and have experienced racism through police bullying growing up. So, I say all that to say I usually don’t walk away with these feelings towards these topics. Cabrini in this movie came across prideful! As an empowering strong woman who expresses through her behaviors and words throughout the movie that “men can never do what women can do.” That was the message. Though many saints were strong and tenacious they were humble. In one scene during chaos going on with wounded men, it shows her and the sisters coming to the rescue while a priest is sitting there looking scared and helpless. It definitely didn’t give any good impressions about the priesthood…only womanhood.

The film's director Alejandro Monteverde and writer Rod Barr done a fantastic job of illuminating Saint Cabriini's life and difficulties. Magnificently hinting at the invisible hand of God directing her life. She represented the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity in the movie. Throughout the movie, the director shows us flashbacks of Cabrini drowning as a young child in the water. She finds herself drowning in a sea of hopelessness once more. She is found praying meditatively in a Catholic church while surrounded by all of Christ's symbols. The fall is the subject of her diligent philanthropic work with the underprivileged. Her remorseful friend shows up to support her. The scene immediately returns to the young child drowning, and we see a man saving the girl's life by reaching out with his arms while the water covers his face. Again, those all-encompassing, unseen arms give her strength, and she summons the courage to address the Italian parliament, embarrassing them with a allusion to the day of judgment found in the Gospels.

Sadly, it's more about a feminist than about a saint or an immigrant. I would appreciate a single line telling directly that her power comes from God, and that power is not for dominion or superiority but for service. This film was of incredible quality for sure, cinematography was great, acting was great, the did an amazing job making you feel like you are in 1900 New York ! I was just very disappointed of the lack of God in the film, especially since its a film about a SAINT! They almost never show Mother Cabrini talking to God or praying and the place she seemingly gets her strength from is not God but herself. The one scene when we see her in the church in Italy was also a little disappointing and this is why: She doesn't know what to do and so presumably she went to the church to pray but what inspires her to go and do something had nothing to do with God. The lady Victoria came in and reminded Mother Cabrini how strong she was and how she just needed to get up and fight. This could have been a great moment to show that we must pull our strength from "Where I am weak he is strong" but instead she just musters up some more strength and goes to talk to the Senate. I know that in one part of the film after she returns from hospital she does say, "we can do all things through him who strengthens us" Which of course is true and the real Mother Cabrini loved this passage from the bible but the film did not stick to that idea of pulling strength from Christ as all Christian should. The character they depict seems to have not very much respect for authority which, considering that Cabrini is in fact a Saint she would have to of had Holy obedience. This is a theme in all Saints lives. For example: Padre Pio is an amazing saint, he was a holy priest and he had the stigmata, this guy wasn't doing anything wrong and yet his bishop told him not to say mass and not to hear confessions. This decision to take away his faculties to say mass and hear confessions doesn't make any sense. Padre Pio wasn't doing anything wrong but Padre Pio did not say, "well Im not doing anything wrong so im gonna say mass and hear confessions anyway" he was obedient and did what his superiors said. So as I already said since she Mother Cabrini is a Saint she would of had that same holy obedience so it is a shame that in this film about her they don't really seem to promote that profound respect for authority. (To make myself clear I don't mean the police and the Mayor. I hated those characters as much as anyone else I am mainly referring to her Bishop.)Once again the film was well made in all other areas. And perhaps the purpose of the film was not to show how "You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you" but rather Women are strong and can do anything. If that's the case then they certainly did a good job showing it. But if you were to ask the real SAINT Cabrini "How did you accomplish so much?" I don't know what she would say because I am not Mother Cabrini and I am no Saint but I dont think it would be (because I can do anything) but rather something along the lines of (I have done nothing, it is Christ who has done everything through me) and the vibe I got from the character in the movie would have said the former rather then the latter.

I saw the movie yesterday. It is beautifully filmed and wonderfully acted and tells an inspiring story - especially for young girls who still contend with a world that hesitates to fully accept their leadership and contributions. I do agree with the view that it would have been appropriate to have had more indications of what surely must have been a strong prayer life and other signs of her faith. Most humans cannot do what she did - people naturally must wonder how she did the amazing work she did. They will have to figure it out - and hopefully the attention this movie gives to Cabrini’s life and contributions will move people to research more into her life and the faith that guided her. Regarding those who feel she was insubordinate, I did not see that. When the archbishop gave her an order, she followed it, in spite of her feeling tremendous disappointment. I think it’s important to remember that at this time in history, women were constantly undermined. She was obviously highly intelligent and capable of achieving great things. Yet even as she was working to help the most vulnerable, she was accused of ambition and of not observing her place. It was because she was a woman and because she dared to assert herself in areas that were customarily held as the prerogative of men. She persevered and found creative solutions and helped countless people. This lovely film is uplifting and enlightening.

So-just maybe- sharing a saint via her usefulness to the world, (to this day), and people not having their prejudices triggered so they don’t even watch the show, may introduce people to the power of faith before they run away reacting to obvious prayer . It may change their view about faith because, even though they don’t see much focus in this movie upon het faith-practices, they know she is a saint, and common knowledge is that saints act in and access faith in order to find their path, and the power to carry that path out. Just a thought. (I came to your video from typing in “Is movie Cabrini a feminist / woke movie)- i was trying to find out so, if the answer was yes, i could avoid it like the plague. I want so much more from a movie than that. I wanted an ACTUAL account of her life. (and not to be someone’s - anyone’s-hostage ). Thanking you. From a 62 year old woman. (Im off to check out a few more reports on the ‘feminist’ issue in regards to this movie)

This movie is not about increasing Catholics faith but to invite non-believers to understand the power of having God as the center of your life.

This is a move that can be enjoyed by any secular humanist.

All of the people complaining about the lack of Catholicness in the movie how about think that people may go watch it and be touched to learn more about her, to find out about her faith and where her strength came from. I grew up in a church that bordered on abusive, I had religious rules shoved down my throat. I refuse to see any movie that I think will be preachy and I assume non believers feel the same way. Maybe just maybe this movie will bring people to Christ because they don’t feel like they are being preached at. This revolves around nuns and the pope, I am sure people know that they are all about God.

The movie looks very pretty.

Brilliant observations all around here. I have often said the faith based movies are awful. I can tell you ending 5 min into it. There's another point you bring up. Evangelization? Catholicism was the engine for Western Civilization. Why? Many reasons but certainly one can not ignore ART!!!! Literature! Architecture! Much like the virtue of charity. Charity is nothing without the goal being primarily salvation. NOT social justice. The goal of good art is evangelization to Christ. No one cares about dopey one dimensional insulting "Christian Genre." That being said, bring me a Man For All Seasons! We got some stuff to talk about!!!!

All I got out of Cabrini was pure feminist propaganda…nothing Catholic about it

I’m in charge of fundraising for my SSVP Conference and have been struggling with people at church criticizing us for helping the poor, disabled, etc. That we should be teaching them to get jobs and fend for themselves. That rotten food is good enough for them and that beggars can’t be choosers. I’ve also struggled with Church authorities telling us we can’t fundraise in the church other than collect donations in the poor box (no one carries cash anymore), we can’t have fundraisers, we can’t ask people outside the church for donations,we can’t use social media, etc. I could relate and found a sense of renewal in my mission from watching the movie.

Overall not a bad movie. Has a serious flaw though. It's a movie about a Catholic Saint and it's not a Catholic movie at all. Cabrini is portrayed as a secular feminist social worker. This movie missed many easy opportunities to put Christ at the center of the message. I don't even remember her mentioning Jesus once in the movie.

I'm not a big fan of period pieces and a saint story sounds like a yawn-fest. ( the only saint movie i liked was the story of Joan arc) That said if nothing blows up , as far as I'm concerned it's not worth watching.

Spoiler alert: something does blow up in this movie! And I mean that literally. There is an actual explosion in the movie.

Good art from the past would have had Jesus in it, think of Pieta…if Jesus is left out, then it can’t be too good, especially if the movie is about a saint

As a Catholic, I was very disappointed in Cabrini. Yes, the cinematography was good. However, she was a Catholic nun remember. I did not see her prayer life or devotional life. God was seldom mentioned and I don't think Jesus was ever mentioned. When I learned the movie was to be released on International Women's Day, that should have been my first clue. When she saw the squalor the Italian children lived in she was moved and saw what her mission was. She was determined. That part was good. She saw discrimination and wanted to help those discriminated against, that was good. I missed the Catholic imagery of her attending Mass with the other Sisters, or them praying the rosary or praying at all. If there were not any scenes with the Pope or Archbishop I would not have thought her to be Catholic. This was a movie about a Catholic saint without the Catholic part. Are we supposed to apologize for being Catholic? Did they need to water down the Catholic faith of Cabrini not to offend protestants? Mother Cabrini accomplished so much with her order and there was 4 minutes at the end that showed how her mission grew across America and eventually the world. I will never watch another movie from Angel Studios.

I think you got carried away by the acting and production values------the move was a typical 'merican success story with a (surprise!) female protagonist. American Catholics are protestants who go to Mass.

La vera fede è azione. Dalla azioni che la santa ha prodotto ricostruisci la sua fede. Le parole si possono fraintendere e spesso sono solo inutili.
