Picture this: we're in the earliest days of human history, right after Adam and Eve have been expelled from the Garden of Eden. They start a new life outside of Eden, and soon enough, they have their first child. Cain enters the world as the first human ever to be born, not created. His name, Cain, comes from the Hebrew word "Qayin," meaning "acquired" or "possessed." Growing up, Cain had a lot of pressure being the firstborn in human history. His younger brother Abel, born later, took on the role of a shepherd while Cain became a farmer. The brothers' different paths and their offerings to God-Cain's crops and Abel's firstborn lamb-led to God's favoring Abel's offering over Cain's, sparking jealousy and resentment in Cain.
Cain's jealousy culminates in tragedy when he invites Abel to the fields and kills him in a fit of rage. This first murder in human history shows the devastating effects of unchecked anger and jealousy. God confronts Cain, who defiantly responds, "Am I my brother's keeper?" God then curses Cain, making him a restless wanderer, but also places a mark on him to protect him from being killed. This mark, a symbol of both punishment and protection, remains a mystery but signifies a complex mix of divine justice and mercy. Despite his curse, Cain builds a city named after his son, Enoch, symbolizing his attempt to create stability in a cursed existence.
