In 1996 I was unhappy with my life and had a little Mazda pickup with a shell and I went on several road trips solo. I was honestly terrified highly anxious for the parked times. Then I went to Yosemite and fell in love with the Park, stated 5 days in a walkin campground and put in my application for the concessionaire there. I lived in a canvas tent for most of the first few years I lived and worked in the Park. I road tripped solo from the Park during that time. My is youngest about to move out. I now work for the USFS right outside Yosemite and am about to move onto my work compound to camp once he moves out. I will save so much money that way I will be able to fix up my current truck and start road tripping again. 😊😊😊

I used to camp a lot. I had ridden a bicycle with all my gear on it down to the edge of the river on the other side of a large city. While camping down there I had three Mexican gang members walk up on the ledge above me. One of them picked up a rock and threw down the end of my camp. I watch the rock roll to stop and look at the hill at him. I reached over and grabbed my machete and took off running up the hill towards them. The three of them ran squealing like little school girls. Before dark I moved camp, just in case they came back. out of my 53 years of camping alone, that was my one and only incident. I am camping right now, alone, except for my rescue dog. But she is not a watchdog.

Hi Amanda, I began camping alone while living in AZ. Before retiring at age 74, I purchased a van and camping gear in 2020 with the intention of doing just that. A friend turned me on to KZbin camping videos. I camped with a friend and with my son at times. But those solo trips to campgrounds I cherish. I am not afraid. But I am also aware that stuff happens. I have not done boondocking because for me, campgrounds give a sense of security. Thanks for sharing your experience and wisdom.😊

I camp alone about 75% of the time. Other times it’s usually with family. We’re dispersed campers. Always trying to be away from the maddening crowd. I’ve had a couple times that felt “off”… my spidey senses were on high alert and I chose to leave. Just twice. Both times it was other people! I’m never worried about animals. I have protection with me at all times. I use common sense. And I, or we, stay safe and have a great time. Camping has been a huge part of my life for over 40 years… can’t imagine life without it!

I’m innately cautious. But sometimes I don’t recognize the threat until after the encounter. Being cautious and having layers of self defense in place have been helpful in keeping me safe even when I don’t initially recognize the level of threat. Sometimes the threat comes in the form of a “nice” person.

I get scared just being at home alone, I can't imagine being alone out in the middle of nowhere by myself. Way back in 2014, I got into the whole tiny house thing, van living, and buschcraft thing. I wanted to do these things so bad, but I didn't. I never really thought about how hard it actually would be and scary too. I may still do van living for a little while, maybe.
