The U.S. is a capitalist society - but does it need to be? The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed inequalities in the system, with Black and brown populations in the country more vulnerable to both the health and economic fallout. For example, unemployment due to COVID hit Black Americans harder than white, and Black people are more likely to be hospitalized than their white counterparts.
In this explainer, we look at the complicated relationship between capitalism, labor, exploitation and race - and whether the pandemic has inspired people to dream of a reality beyond capitalism.

This channel should be deleted. Seriously, you idealize socialism? Capitalism is the reason computers were developed in America's private sector and not in the USSR. People were starting their own companies to provide new and innovative IT services so that they can get rich. If the motivation to start your own company was not there and you could become wealthy by just joining someone else's company, then why would people risk their money and valuable time to start new industries? That's why only the business owner should own the means of production (and not the workers).

@Hawra Ahmed Actually slavery is literally the enemy of free market capitalism. Slavery is when an authoritarian person steals the labor of another to give to the person or program of their own choice. Unregulated capitalism is a threat to and exploitation of everyone. I think the systemic racism is a problem in this country in general and causes much of the economic inequality. The social democratic model of some European and Scandinavian countries is probably the best governing system and results in less income inequality and a better, healthier life for nearly all their citizens. Every quantifiable metric supports this conclusion.

There is a Latin American scholar out there who’s also posited this, pointing to the origins of capitalism as being founded in the type of labor that was enforced upon Indigenous populations and later captive native Africans. These things began in 1492, and it’s not just North America, but the Americas that were born on this system. I can’t recall their name, if it’s Gustavo Verdesio, or another but it’s an idea to take seriously for sure.

@@scottwatson4584 thanks for the reply. Since I am not a mind reader I can only agree with you to the extent that once again this is all economically driven. When there was no more need for wheelwrights in mass they lost their jobs and perhaps made rubber tires. In turn when they have to pay $15 for a burger flipper and burgers cost $16 dollars in part due to that change, it will drive customers to other meals to a degree. Machines will be used more often to keep prices down and to control the profit margins. Mom and pop restaurants have very small margins. As an ex low level manager in a grocery store and being involve in these inside decisions we just loathed to take these types of actions. In a small community even McDonalds was hurt by the negative press. We sought to work a justification for keeping all that we could. Big business I agree are more apt to pursue such measures because if their sheer economic power and relationships with government. Corporations for example are railed about by us and politicians but the fact is they are tax collectors for the federal government and they contribute so much to the campaigns of even people like Bernie and AOC. Actually more on balance then republicans which was a shocker when I looked at the real numbers. So I don’t have to tell you that you are correct that companies are ever in pursuit of less costly innovations and machines where possible to make themselves more competitive and economically viable, but mostly it is "not" to say how can we screw the workers today and most likely even you or I would consider the bottom line or our average investor and business would suffer. And how does this still impact racial welath disparity almost 200 years later? Are blacks and Indians wanting to start farms? Here is my opinion on the debate of capitalism vs communism. Capitalism and free markets are not the "perfect" system. It never has been and nobody has ever said such a thing. But its a helluva lot better than anything else. And the only other alternative is communism/socialism or government controlled societies. Its been proven time and again that free markets advances societies much faster than any type of collectivist behavior. Just look at how fast we have improved cell phones from being lunky 12,000 devices to a 10 dollar phone anyone can obtain. So you probably wanna argue the point of wealth disparities. Its like this, in a mixed economy of free markets and collectivism, wealth disparities are going to happen. No one can ever expect to obtain real wealth because of welfare. Your annual income is controlled by the government.

"This is most emphatically pointed out in their Breakfast for Children Program, where they are actively soliciting and receiving support from uninformed whites and moderate blacks." What does it say about victimization? If you are brought up to believe you are a victim than you become that victim which spreads out to the community. You can use capitalism instead of it using you. The people who feel powerless against a system that indoctrinates people of all colors to believe that they play the role of finding a job, stay there for 20 years and collect a pension. The lucky few who do this are mostly white people while people of color struggle more because those jobs are less accessible but capitalism is not comprised of one color, the whole world uses it based on their ambition and thirst of one day making it. Not everyone has this mindset because they are conditioned to believe in one way of life but there are examples all over business, entertainment and music industry of people of color who succeeded because they wanted it badly enough. If socialism is the answer than what will get is a bland grey society where hard work and ambition have no meaning.

“If socialism is the answer than what we’ll get is a bland grey society where hard work and ambition have no meaning”. I swear every critique of socialism is actually just a critique of capitalism. In capitalism, there exist almost no social mobility. The number 1 determining factor for success is the amount of wealth your born into. You can actually literally guess how success someone will be by looking at the zip code in which they were born in. Most poor people are born and die poor, rich are born and die rich. So it is under capitalism where hard work does not pay. As for boring and grey, again capitalism. Most industries are dominated by just a few companies. Small businesses aren’t even given room to exist because they can’t compete with large corporations. Entire towns have been killed off and malls are dying because they can’t compete with Walmart and Amazon. Our media is owned by like 3 or 4 different companies. It isn’t a victim complex. Just acknowledgement of reality. I guess you still refuse to see reality

As Prof Angela Davis points out, Capitalism troubles many a society, and to me: that should be studied--on how and what happened to overthrow (it is apparent, by these conversations that somebody did)..(come clean, be honest) provide US with detailed information as it pertains to capitalism structures and outcomes, and desires to orchestrate, destabilize South American, south of the border--as any other opposite vision relates to U.S.A. Enquiring minds, like mine would want to know. Yay Angela Davis (I love her so much).

Yes but, Ms Davis is politically and economically a Marxist/Communist. She studied under an avowed marxist Herburt Marcuse at brandeis. Obviously, she stands on the side of Marxism. I would "never" expect Ms Davis to give an "objective" opinion on free markets or capitalism.

The racial issue has its specifc features but after liberal anti-discrimination laws have showed they cannot fix the problem anymore that means that mostly economic redistribution is needed to help the black population in the US. The problem there of course being that the Democratic Party is commited to liberalism and so it cannot enact the redistributive measures needed such as medicare for all (something all the rest of the developed world has), free college, ending colege debt, massive infraestructure and community build up to create jobs and of course to finance that requires ending the military industrial complex. The two parties in the US agree againts those measures and so the measures needed now for the improvement of the quality of life of blacks and the rest of the working population are beyond the current bipartisan monopoly of politics in the US
Yes-Canada has anti-Black racism, too
