Who is your TV dad? For many of us, it's a guy who doesn't have any children and instead captains a starship. Take a look at this tribute to the awesomeness that is Jean-Luc Picard.

I gotta say Patrick Stewart's performance as Picard is fucking incredible, nuanced, layered, believable, moving. He should've won all the awards as far as I'm concerned.

Sir Patrick is, arguably, the most talented all-around actor but I only "kinda like" the character of Picard. He's too close to perfect. Benjamin Lafayette Sisko is real and flawed yet, in dealing with way more chaos, he displays a desire (and aptitude) to maintain the Roddenberry-vision/evolved human values -- but he will break the rules for a greater good. Avery Brooks did a great job as Sisko but, in my opinion, had the better character to bring to life. Stewart is just ridiculously talented and has unbelievable range.

What I find draws me to Picard is his acute and concise sense of justice. I think it's the quality that shows most in each and every episode. And I'm sorry about your dad, trust me, from one fatherless stranger to an other - May we be the Picards to our kids our dads never had or took the chance to be to us.

I had a physically present father, but one who was emotionally absent. Captain Picard was my main fictional male role model. I always wanted to be like him in his strength of character, his ability to command such respect, his gentility and in his wisdom. He also got me into Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. Or rather, it got into me. And I strongly agree that there aren't enough good fathers, father figures and male role models on TV and in film. We need more desperado. People lose respect for fathers and men in general as a result of their portrayal on the screen. Yet we are being continually told to respect women and the role of mothers. The best approach is surely to promote both.

I have a very special appreciation for Captain Picard. During my developmental years I was one of those kids that everyone bullied at school for being a nerdy weakling. This, plus my lack of friends and my parents always fighting at home have left me alone and lost with no one to look up to. Then one day they showed an episode of TNG on TV. I watched it and it changed me. When I saw Patrick Stewart on screen as Picard, a stoic, logical, empathic, honorable and strong individual who stands up for what is right regardless of other influences, I said to myself: "This. This is the sort of man I want to be when I grow up." Captain Picard was my first role model and after I watched the entirety of TNG, I went on to emulate the qualities I saw in him and based my set of values on his. Picard's influence probably saved me from doing a lot of stupid shit like becoming a junkie or an alcoholic and it made a thinker. When I will have children, I will make sure to make them watch Star Trek TNG with me and learn the same values as I did. I find it extremely important especially in our world today, where it seems like positive role models are becoming as rare of a sight as unicorns.

Picard is a great dad and not just because he's competent. He's great in a way entirely different to most other TV dads. Lately the trend has been to show moronic dads on TV, but that trend is relatively new. In the 1950s, dads were often the *only* competent person in a household. The message of the show was one of reinforcing the blind trust in the literal patriarch of the home. After all, "Father Knows Best" was *literally* the name of one of such shows to run during that era. Picard represents an interesting new take on the concept, and one, I believe, is firmly placed in that odd transitional period between the 50s-60s "Father as Dictator" and the 90s-00s "Father as Moron." He represents the dad figure who is not simply right because he says he is. His ethos is one of scientific correction, changing his views to meet the evidence at hand, and only refusing to change when the demands of the situation require the intentional disavowing of said evidence-based reasoning. Picard is a dad for a new era. A father figure exuding competence without deriving his authority from a stubborn sense of privilege or omniscience. A father figure whose quality is derived from his beliefs and behaviors, rather than the thinnest coincidence of biology having made him a white male. The world could use more parents like him, both inside and outside of our entertainment.

*I always felt that Picard was space Atticus Finch.* He wasn't as passionate, bold, or dynamic as the other captains. He was stoic, steady. Private and sometimes even _cold._ But he shone brightest when he was allowed a chance to articulate what was on his _mind._ Like Atticus Finch, he was often placed in the position of defending an individual, an idea, and even humanity itself while on trial. Kirk's arena was a literal one, Picard's was a courtroom. Episodes like _The Drumhead_ and _The Measure of a Man_ show Picard using his mind, his intellect, and unshakeable morality as a weapon. He could cut an antagonist to pieces with his words as Worf could with a Bat'leth.

I agree to both post, I haven't seen (or read) to kill a mockingbird yet (it doesn't really run in my country, and nowadays I have to be in a special mood for old black and white stuff). But from what I did hear that seems very fitting. When it comes to Sisko, these aspects certainly were among the most interesting of his character. I never liked him as much as Picard, since he was a passionate person more lead by emotion, but it was a necessary change after Picard to make him different. I really only disliked the "ascension to godhood" part of Sisko's character.

What about in Nemesis? Picard is about ready to give up his like to save Data and Data turns around and saves him instead. No doubt there was a real bond there. You have to figure, Data was the Pinochio type who always dreamed of becoming a real boy (human). Picard helped him establish himself as a person in the eyes of Star Fleet rather than just equipment. Picard was Jipetto, the father.

The highest compliment that can be paid to Capt. Picard is the way in which Worf views him. Word could break Picard like a balsa-wood toy. Worf knows this, and Picard knows this. But Worf knows that Picard's tenacity and intelligence make Picard a dangerous foe, even in the face of overwhelmingly superior strength. The way in which Michael Dorn expresses this as Worf, when standing off against Picard in the few episodes when they clash, speaks volumes about their relationship. A true testament to great writing and acting.

My father showed me both star wars and star treck as a child. The few times I was sick and he was at home we would watch star treck on the tv. After time I came to notice that picard and dad shared some personalities. Mostly calm and analytical, caring and gentle yet with the ability to be stern if needed, a good sense of justice and morals, helping those he can while teaching them to stand on their own, listening and willing to learn while still guiding others and a person I admire. While its getting hard to remember my dad at times I still get this feeling of seeing him when I watch Picard in action. And if you all exuse me now while I go to cry from missing dad and watch some star treck... thank you Picard for helping me to see a piece of dad.

Love Jean-Luc, he's such a brilliant character. He isn't perfect and has flaws such as the blind pride he shows in first contact "and I.....will make them pay" even when his crew are losing against the borg. The cheeky side he shows with the treasure hunter/thief he falls for in the series and the relationship he has with his family is strained and difficult. Loving this channel and the videos and I can't wait for season 2. Would love to see a video on the romulan society and its politics pre/post reman revolt and/or the startfleet covert unit from DS9, section 8?

I used to a Kirk fan all the way, especially when I was a kid - and I still love Kirk. But the older I become the more I appreciate Picard. Yes, he may not be the action hero like Kirk, but he has a strength all of his own that defines him. That makes him an equal to Kirk. I suppose you could say Kirk is the warrior, while Picard is the diplomat. Both have unique qualities about them that make them stand out, but really, we shouldn't judge one against the other. Picard was a great Captain for his show, as was Kirk for his. At the end of the day, I agree with this video. Picard is a brilliant character we all should aspire to be.

"I suppose you could say Kirk is the warrior, while Picard is the diplomat." I wouldn't quite put it that way, Kirk never wanted to be a warrior and always used violence as a last resort. I'd say it's more that Captain Kirk is a working man's, blue collar hero, whereas Picard was more of an aristocrat's, white collar hero.

It was similar for me. As a child the Original series and TNG used to run at the same time on different channels, and I always preferred the original. Somewhere in my teenage years that changed and I greatly preferred the more complex TNG series and characters (Though despite certain dated aspects, "The Devil in the Dark" is still one of my favourite stories of all time).

Kirk was the kind of captain you'd need for deep space exploration with little to no Starfleet support: much more of a cowboy and able to punch an Andorian when necessary. He was very much an embodiment of frontiersman qualities. At the same time, he faced a lot of quandaries about standing up for what's right when outgunned, or resisting oppression even when you're virtually powerless to do so, or taking risks to ensure that the right is accomplished, or even standing up to legal authority to ensure the rights of beings. Picard, while being an explorer, had much more ready access to a far more developed infrastructure. Space exploration was far less of a frontiersman-esque environment at that point. In Picard's time, the existential threats were fewer, and the bigger threat was bureaucratic overreach and administrative procedure trampling the rights of the individual. For every episode about a Borg invasion or the threat of war with the Romulans, I'd guess there were two or three where Picard had to weigh the value of the rule of law against a pressing need to save the rights of the individual. In the end, there was probably approximately an equal amount of moral quandary addressed in each series, but the administrative and infrastructural challenges led to different types of men at the helm. Trek is always at its best when it's examining the merits of both sides of quandaries.

A surprising outcome is that eager-for-action Kirk had all his fancy double-fist-chops and horizontal-flying-kicks and somersault-butt-tackles ... but peaceful-diplomatic Picard could simply drop a man (or a Klingon, or a Nausicaan) with one or two quick, solid, well-placed blows. Picard apparently considered himself quite adept at fencing, too, if TNG season 1 is to be believed. And he was also fairly handy with a revolver or a submachinegun. While Kirk's only special combat skills were frantic musical score and getting his shirt ripped.
@MichaelDavis-cy4ok
@MichaelDavis-cy4ok 5 жыл бұрын
Kirk, with his fighting style, was a victim of the fight choreographer. :' ( I think I actually saw a documentary that said the show's creators were intentionally drawing on the frontiersman image, which they figured would involve a lot of overhanded punching and drop kicking a la Hollywood's version of a barroom brawl, whereas TNG and later series were much more pragmatic in their fighting (with the exception of Worf), assuming there would be some kind of martial art pushed by Starfleet. Sadly, the execution by the fight choreographers and the soundtrack people in TOS was the product of its time.

Later, when we started having deeper conversations, she would say when she thought of her dad, he would either be my father (be still my beating heart) or Charles “Pa” Ingles from Little House on the Prairie. We all have egos and while none of us will ever shed it a philosopher (who's name escapes me) said that it's like peeling and infinite onion. You can work on shedding it as much as you want, but it will always be there. It'll just get smaller and smaller. Picard seems like the kind of person who has worked hard on that, but at the same time realized this and learned to live with it.

Mr. Rogers was my TV dad when I was small and I just needed comfort; Dan from Roseanne was my tv dad when I was a teen and I needed to know what a good and safe man was supposed to be. Picard was more of a mentor and best ethics professor I coulda had. He was the ideal intellectual, sedate, reliable sort of person who could be real, but was aspirational. But you can see even in how he keeps himself distant from his crew that he isn't a father type. He's not even a good boyfriend. The closest you can get to Picard is to catch him late at night and trick him into discussing archaeology, if you get him into the wine first. But you don't have to be a parent to be a person that young people can admire.

a great essay. Sir Patrick's Captain Picard and Professor Xavier have been important centres of human morality. I see Sir Patrick more and more as an example to follow. There is a tv dad that I have also looked up to- Jonathan Kent of Smallville. Not a perfect person, but raised a "Superman." John Schneider's Jonathan Kent was not a stupid father, he was a hard working man with important values to teach his son.

For some of us, Picard served as the measure of a man. Lacking an actual father-figure, Picard's example served as template for the kind of person we aspired to become.

There are few celebrities or fictional personalities I would look up to enough to actually want to be like (David Attenborough is an exception), however, I have always looked up to Picard for the reasons stated in this video ever since I was a kid. A gentleman, a scholar, an explorer and the commander of the most awesome starship ever created (in my opinion) :)

Growing up in the late 70's early 80's the character that I would have wished for my father was John Walton Jr. (Walton's Mountain) He always seemed to arrive at the right answers for his children simply be letting them be who they are. Strong, unschooled but wise, gentle, caring and a moral center for his family. My ideal of a father

How could you miss the fact that the whole show had the running theme of Picard being the father figure to Riker and more obviously Wesley? Riker didn't get along with his father so he saw Picard as his dad. One of the main reasons Riker didn't get his own command because of his father-son bond with Picard. Riker was extremely protective of Picard not really as a 2nd officer but as a son. I remember how we search for Picard in the Gambit episodes like Picard was his real dad.

I loved all the points you brought up on why Picard would/does make a great dad, but I was really expecting you to throw in a little nod to Sisko at the end of the video. It's just that Sisko is a great dad (yes, he makes mistakes, but who doesn't?) albeit one from a less popular series than TNG. Not to mention that there were a couple scenes at the beginning of DS9 where Picard and Sisko interacted. I believe Sisko outright complained to Picard (who was his superior at that point) about how DS9 was not an ideal place for him to raise a son all on his own. It's pretty much that Sisko was putting his son above his Starfleet career. But otherwise this was an awesome video and I love the stuff you put out.

As far as I'm concerned, Picard was and is kind of a dad-figure for me. Fictional character, yes, but in literally growing up watching TNG, his words of wisdom and ideals have become part of my own. His lessons helped to guide me and carried when my own father was lacking.

This is such a great video! You made so many wonderful point! edit: You should do one on Janeway as a mother - I've always seen Janeway as really 'motherly' and I've mentioned the point to Trekie friends when we were talking about our favorite captains. It just reminds me how sickening I found Dark Matter, a recent series where the female lead or captain is relentlessly sexualized. I just thought about sci-fi and how it's changed, I thought about what a captain needs to possess in 2015.

Loved this piece and hope to find you doing one which highlights Starfleets actual father Archetype Captain Benjamin Lafayette Sisko, His portrayal as the first Black Captain often overshadows, the fact he was the first to be seen as a common family man, raising an awesome son thru personal tragedies, all on his own, and how his crew formed to become somewhat of a surrogate and extended family, helping make Jake Sisko the greatest Son of Starfleet Just sayin, Love your videos

Trekspertise in the form of Q's vision in VOY: Death Wish, the Q continuum is somewhat boring and dull, populated by omnipotent inmortal beings who have gone far and wide across the galaxy and seen every. single. possible. ending and alternative. again. and again. and again. and again. think of it as playing minecraft in creative mode, where you sit back and just troll the villagers.

I did like in the episode "disaster" how Captain Picard made the three children he was stuck in the turbolift. and he made the three children he was stuck in there with a mini crew. Terrific stuff, as always. But being an old Trekkie I've always found Kirk to be a terrific TV Dad. I've described him as such to friends. Kirk would often begin an episode with a typical conservative Dad stance but end with a realization of his own failings. Errand of Mercy, Arena, for example? Hey, just a little hope this series doesn't forget the original. :)

A bit late to this video, but I've always kinda seen Picard as a father figure to Data and Wesley. Even Riker to a certain extent. But while I did have a real father who is still happily married to my mother this day, I literally grew up watching TNG from an age where I was so young I didn't understand it as a concept. A ship travelling through space set in the future. I just saw a bunch of strange people living in a strange foreign environment. But as I grew up of course I comprehended the basics and enjoyed most of the episodes. I remember coming home from schol and sitting down with my parents to watch an episode of TNG. There were some episodes I didn't understand like the lack of REM sleep with Deanna being the only one to dream-communicate with the telepath aliens regarding hydrogen-I'd not studied chemistry yet. And I didn't understand why the Cardassian tortured Picard, about the "five lights" thing. I was too young to comprehend torture and will-breaking. At least not until I caught re-watches many years later of course. Either way, I grew up watching the Enterprise-D crew and learnt many of my morality and philosophy traits from them. In a sense Picard was my TV uncle with the rest of my crew as tv family. I like to think they helped raise me well.

I never really saw him as a father figure, growing up watching the series (born in 84), I still remember how big an "tv event" they made out of the final episode of the next generation with a behind the scenes special hosted by Jonathan Frakes, I would say in some ways Wesley was kind of what inspired me, but I can see several of the things you talk about in this video in myself, so I guess it did rub off a little.
