Awesome vid. With so much content on KZbin of people buying and/or working on street cars, this is definitely an underrepresented niche that you could get lots of interest in. Would love to see a series of step by step buying, upfitting/restoring, and finally racing or tracking one of these

3:41, judging off of the nose cone and wing shape, the livery and series logos, that there is a Dallara IR-03 chassis with the short oval configuration aerodynamically. given from the "Indy Racing League" logo above the air box, and that the Dallara got a hefty facelift in 2005 (known as the IR-05, with slight revision in 2007 known as IR-07) which made the front nose cone much more sleek rather than the more bulbous look of IR-03 and earlier variants its definitely from either the 2003 or 2004 seasons (possibly both) ran at tracks such as Richmond, Nazareth, Gateway. Youre exactly right on how the $100k price point for that is EXTREMELY reasonable and if i had the cash that baby would be mine and id bring it out every weekend to hear that methanol powered Chevrolet scream. Great content!

The Champcar with the Goldwing engine it is a PacWest car. I heard the owner Bruce McCaw used to put small engines in his old chassis and drive them to other owners shops, even delivering xmas gifts with it, so I wouldn't be surprised if that engine swap was done by the PacWest team themselves, back in the day.

Casey, actually, campaigning a Club Formula Ford would probably be a good program for Genius Garage. Those are pre / mid 80's Formula Fords, and parts are still ready available for them. Still all mechanical and straight forward, and more designed as a fun / budget minded class by SCCA. A good way to teach mechanical grip and single seater basics before getting into aero-grip (other than Karting). Most modern race car engineers still over-emphasis areo everything (almost as much as computer controlled everything) before getting the basics correct.

WideAwakeViking If it is good enough to train multiple wins Formula 1 drivers, the lower classes are amazingly fun. Get involved in a 40 horse power Formula Vee and you can learn how to conserve cornering speeds and braking just like Nikki Lauda did. Anytime you’re racing anyone in any thing you can learn and have a great time.

Casey, this video was awesome. I cannot agree more with the comparison of the price of a sports car for street use compared to a race car. There is so much value in race cars and track cars. I think there is a budget for everyone out there. Can we all afford a former Indy car? No. Maybe if we make it a priority. To the nay sayers I say look up the price of a used spec miata. I am sure if you drove it to its full potential you would have an absolute blast! If I had the money to buy a used Ferrari or race car I would pick the race car all day. You could never have the same fun in the Ferrari....Unless its a Ferrari race car.

These are the best kind of formulas ever made in the best era motorsport has ever known. It's a shame that they only lacked safety, but I think that building these cars with design slightly upgraded to today's construction methods would be super cheap, so having them designed in a safer way wouldn't make their price rise too much.

IF money were no object, I would definitely keep a 80's-90's race car, but to me you need a track in the "back yard" to make it worthwhile. I have had the opportunity to get maybe a few hours total of seat time in down powered versions as Sears and Laguna during industry junkets over the years and have to say there is nothing remotely close to that driving experience in a street car. Impossibly hard to maneuver at low speed while impossible to get to the limits at high speed. You will never have so much fun accumulating all kinds of bruises, cuts and burns in a matter of minutes and start cramping up within a half hour from the exertion. You will struggle to understand just how quick you can stop or take a turn and when you drive home in your sports car at the end of the day, it will seem as boring as a 90's camry. PS, love how you phrased it related to messing with cars with history... not everything should be a custom project. Looking forward to seeing what in back.

For anyone that doesn't recognise the Ilmor, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ilmor Ilmor were the company that tuned the Mercedes engines that powered McLaren in F1 to a couple of championships. Sadly, the co-founder, Paul Morgan tragically died in 2001 after an aviation accident. Paul Morgan was the stronghold of Ilmor, and following his tragic death, Mario Illien, the co-founder (The IL to Morgan's MOR), was never able to recreate the magic. A lot of time the engine manufacturers get the kudos, but it's the tuners that make the magic. Honda Mugen for example.

So whats the point of buying one of these? Are you going to take a speedway car to a speedway and run laps at over 200 and have safety on hand just in case. I'll take the used Lamborghini any day over the hassle one of these would be. Nice to look at in a museum though.

$100k and change for an Indy car with an engine is dirt cheap god damn, and I thought March/Spice Group C chassis were cheap at 200k and change British pounds.

"You do have to make friends and have to be reasonably intelligent..." Welp, I'm boned. In all seriousness, the Menards and Marlboro Indy cars make me feel things I don't quite understand. Jealous of the people who drive these things. Gotta be so much fun.
I bought a proper race car! It was harder than I thought..
