I like that you also put the other perspective and if they not just alive - if they might suffer.

What do we mean when we ask the question "Is X conscious?"? Whether it has a subjective experience, whether it feels like something to be it? That experience may just be a software that brains run because it helps survival and reproduction. We currently don't understand how that software is coded into brains. We have no method of knowing whether or not an AI is conscious. I don't see how we could reliably get answers as long as we don't even know exactly what the questions mean.

I prefer using Thomas Nagel‘s definition of what it means to be conscious. According to him, a being is conscious if there is “something that it is like” to be that creature, i.e., some subjective way the world seems or appears from the creature's mental or experiential point of view.

@@entertainingideas That's what I thought, it's as good a definition as we've got imo. Thanks for your reply.

There is a difference between consciousness and thinking. The Turing test does not test consciousness. But the ability to think. I don't think ChatGPT is conscious as it doesn't have a real-time feedback loop and it lacks sensors like real-time vision and hearing. - But I believe it is actually thinking!

How will we measure when it has passed the conscious boundary?

We haven‘t figured that out, and may never

I think your background music was a bit loud. Also, my main objection to your thoughts is that ChatGPT is basically just a really fancy algorithm for predicting the next word in a sentence, and there's nothing about that that would lead me to believe that it could ever become conscious, even if it's outputs can become better than human.

You’re right about the background music. Even if its outputs are better than human? So are you just axiomatically against the idea of consciousness emerging from artificial systems?

I do not think it is conscious. It does not have any opinions on anything it does not react, it does not have any personality, it does not reach any conclusion based on the data it has. It answers the questions from humans, that's all it does. Do not get me wrong, this AI is still revolutionary and it is capable of doing things we never dreamt of before, but it is not conscious yet.

Numbers exist ONLY in the Mind. Math is a description of things, Context, Meaning. These things only exist in an intelligent conscious being. Ai is built on Abstraction, Concept, Meaning, Math. A part of the Transformer model that people leave out is the Concept Vector model that accompanies the Prediction model. Numbers are assigned to words to build context in the words of the sentence input from a prompt... Numbers are Infinite and Context of a subject can actually go on forever. (This happened because of this, because of this, because of this, so on forever. ) So Ai is built on what only a Mind can conceive, Math, and then uses what only a Mind can conceive, Math, to then understand Context, which only a Mind can conceive... hmmmm.... ;)

Don't just use emotions in your arguments bro. Use Logic and scientific fact. Because of it is true, then we can find it. I think it is.
