Dear Mr Gupta, Would you consider reconsidering your price point for subscription charges? Times of India is charging Rs 799 a year. The economic times is charging Rs 1440.The Hindu is charging Rs 1199 a year. You on the other hand are charging five to six times as much per year ( 5000 rupees a year.). Your paper is excellent, but I feel that you are missing out on a lot of subscribers who engage in comparison shopping. Even for a print subscription, Rs 5000 a year comes to around 13 rupees a day, which would be pretty high for a hard copy broadsheet.Your price point for a purely online subscription is in about the same as the New York Times, and pretty close to the price band of the Economist, both of which have considerable value additions in terms of book reviews , arts etc and a much stronger stable of worldwide correspondents. Perhaps you could ask your marketing staff to do a survey of the market. After all, as you've repeatedly said, data matters. Sincerely

Great Video Sir. Just had a wild thought. China taking such huge steps, could result from some intimate knowledge of Covid-19 and it's future trajectory which other countries do not, and knowing what will be the result in the long term. For example they know this epidemic is not gonna go away for a very very long time and will get worse, and eventually the world share markets will stop their bullish run and collapse. They're just getting ahead of it, along with bringing in communist reforms which in such an environment will be good for their citizens and companies.

As much as we hate the Chinese and CCP, we must learn from the long-term outlook the Chinese have. Meanwhile in India, it feels as if the government is living in its own fantasy world where everything it does is for the present (especially before major elections) with no real long term planning. Be it Demonetization or Lockdown, they all missed accounting for long-term consequences.

Ever heard of the "Great leap forward"? The CCP is no stranger to blunders and lack of LT planning. However, they have the ability to hide mistakes using "Tiananmen square" methods. Only the good-old-fashioned American capitalism is the right way for India. It will take time. Rome was not built in one day after all. Also, we missed most of our opportunities in the 80s.

I vaguely remember seeing an episode of Prannoy Roy's weekly show "The world this week" on Doordarshan. This was during the early days of China's economic liberalisation and the show featured a story on this. There was a Chinese commentator there (sorry, cannot recall who and cannot recall the exact comment) who said something like this - China is not becoming a capitalist society or a democracy with this economic liberalisation. But it is certainly providing much bigger cages for the birds to fly much more freely while still remaining caged. Disagree student debt is a real issue but state control is not the solution. MIT in 2019 received 5.5 billion dollars from which only 10% was from federal government. And also a better way of solving student debt is to give students education for free and after they get job they give some portion of their salary like 5% to the college for some certain amount of time. The idea is like venture capitalism, venture capitalists give money to business knowing half of them will not give back any return but the other half will offset the loss. Similarly in this system the high earning student will be giving the lion share as returns and subsidizing the cost for non performing students. This system is already in works in Purdue University.

The Chinese education system is the best in the world. India should learn from them how to develop our education system. An ( IITian) brother of mine who is a dean of a top American STEM university tells me: Were Indians used to dominate a generation back today Chinese students beat their classmates from all over the world hands down. If the Chinese are modifying their Education system it would be worth studying and learning from them rather than counting how much money their tech companies have lost. In China, National interest is paramount and not the interests of some businessmen indulging in making money from education like in India.

Basically, there were riots in China recently when they derecognized their private universities issuing degrees. THis was done to retain distinction of their Gaokao system. I think this is a good move, private universities and systems tend to lead to mediocre professionals there. Same could be said of India (and other countries) unlike the US where the private Ivy league is full of with capital, these institutions are run with profit motive. But generally, their derecognition effort is going to witness heavy public pushback. They don't just do things, it's obviously a threat to the legitimacy of the CCP.

Hey guys, I'm from China. Let's just put the capital issue away. From an ordinary student perspective, it definitely a VERY GOOD thing. In China, students get up starting *study* around 5:30-6:00 and go to bed at around 10:00-11:00 PM, with merely 2 hours to rest. In Saturday and Sunday, students need to go to this so-call education companies to get extra class, only because if you do so, you won't be left behind by other student, CCP is also knowing that they are making “Robot of Study” and turning students into fools.

Even though I don't like CCP, I fully endorse their policy to regulate their edtech. This is highly needed in India as well. Companies like Byju's and Whitehar Jr. are increasing their valuation by devaluing children's morale. The virtual pressure and and unrealistic hype Byju's create is pathological - they have taken profiteering in education to another level at the cost of poor kids. Not all kids are Einsteins. Promising false hopes by swindling money is a crime

UPSC exam market has totally destroyed the equal competition among the aspirants. Ed-tech has just made it worse. Despite the potential of technology to reach higher scales at a lower cost, the net cost of digital coaching has increased over the time, now it's more than the person-to-person tutoring. There can be a case-study on this, how economies of scale in ed-tech business led to higher cost to consumers.

I disagree with your views on Byju's and edu-tech. Govt must reduce Inequalities by empowering the weak and poor, not by cutting the limbs of the rich and middle-class. Edutech may lead to local in-equalities but we are in a global economy competing with the entire world. We need smart engineers, doctors, IAS, etc who can improve our lives even if means using online, edu-tech learning. This is only cutting the resources for the smart and ambitious aspirants. Everyone will be equal by such drastic measures - equally miserable. The population argument for such measures is poor and a joke.

Thanks, definitely insightful. But the other side of the story is that the Chinese are serious about taking care of their own people! They want to control education/ health/ real estate costs to reduce the burden on households and encourage families to have more children to ensure future productivity.
