Your guest's characterization @36:50 of the Alaska purchase is a bit reductive. The negotiations came into earnest after Russia's loss in the Crimean War and Czar Alexander II's assessment that Russia was not in a position to defend Alaska against neighboring UK presence in Canada if another round of hostilities took off. Delays occurred under the Buchanan administration with much focus on the pending Civil War. Moreover, the middle 19th century was the period of, perhaps, the best US-Russian relationship historically: the US had clearly sympathized with Russia during the Crimean War with American doctors and military observers behind the Russian lines. Moreover, when the UK and France entreated Russia to join in coercing Lincoln into ceding the Confederacy, Alexander II rejected their invitation vehemently and sent his navies to the San Francisco and New York Bays in support of the Union. Russia wanted to focus on its own continental industrial and transportation network and was not interested in maintaining an outpost it could barely defend. Also, the US would hardly have been up to a military seizure across British territory with whom we did not have good relations and so shortly on the heels of the Civil War when reconstruction and completion of our own transcontinental railway was the order of the day. Seward and Russia's Edouard de Stoekl had a strong relationship post Civil War, so the transaction was made in good faith and to each side's interest. @François Picard : vous êtes merveilleux !

Currently working in construction in Australia. They’re extracting iron ore Here. They have one of the highest standards of living, while still looking after nature and preserving important parts of it. And they’re also keeping indigenous interests in mind. Everyone lives a beautiful life. Denmark is currently sending billions of crowns to Greenland. The fact that Greenland has ruled out any extraction / mining, is a huge mystery to me. THEY COUPD HAVE A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE THEN DENMARK. Which in turn already maintain one of the 10 highest living standards on earth.. it’s backwards

Well, Ever since I really started being interested in history and its effect on politics, I have come to the conclusion that I cannot any longer agree with Winston Churchil's assessment of the US that: "America will do the right thing, but not until they explored all of the alternatives." Instead I have reached the conviction that the the US will inevitably, enthusiastically and rigorously become exactly what it once fiercely fought against. It will likely end itself that way.
