What the US night vision market needs is a company like PSA. PSA doesn't want profit margins or military contracts, they just want to equip every american with the most reasonably priced, US made guns. THAT is what we need in night vision and thermal. A company that is fine with providing a 90% "just as good" product at like 20% the cost. Economy of scale the sh*t out of a US factory and be so competitively priced that everybody is basically forced to buy from you. Don't overcharge 300% just because it's for the military. Make US made affordable again.

There will never be “cheap” night vision. The American government controls the supply of Gen3 tubes. Not to mention the manufacturing process of tubes which drives up the cost. Sure, Gen2+ tubes or digital chinese NV may be “just as good” for some people, but generally do not perform as well as Gen3 in low light situations. Still, ballpark price of entry into analog NV can be anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 for a monocular. Obviously price depending on specs, etc.

I see people cry about supporting the CCP when people ask about the RH25, StingIR, and other IRay options. But when I ask what the US equivalent of the RH25 or StingIR is, the only answer that checks off the same boxes is the Trijicon SkeetIR-X ($12.5k) and PoT Voodoo-S ($17k). The US market just isn’t competitive currently. I think an updated NVision NOX18 that has clip on capability for the same price as it’s currently at ~$6k would do extremely well, but NVision hasn’t touched the NOX18 in 4 years.

It's been well over 15 years since I owned NODs (7-bravos), and I haven't kept up on it. At the time, thermal imageing systems were $12k + for the most basic of units. What i'm seeing now is just amazing. So my question: Given my experience with NVGs, and what I'm seeing with Thermal, why would you run NVGs with thermals? What are NVGs giving you that thermal doesn't?
@RADIOACTIVEBUNY10 ай бұрын
At this time, the following: 1. No latency (at all, compared to some, or maybe a lot) 2. Can see through windows, and can see IR emitters, and be used for passive aiming. 3. Generally, still, better for navigation and active movement while thermals remain king for observation. As Moore's law benefits thermals, though, I think we'll see these advantages dwindle.

Man, it’s awesome gear for sure, it’s just that most people can’t afford it. People these days are struggling to buy a PSA rifle thanks to the economy, not that there is anything wrong either PSA, I just opted to build my rifles because it’s easier to come up with $50 here and $100 there. The problem with NV and Thermal is dropping $2k or more on buying a QUALITY unit. I know a couple people who have bought digital night vision that are pretty good, but it’s not on the level of the latest tech available. I’ve seen helmet mounted NV go for up to $40k!! I’d love to just drop $5k-$10k on a bridged unit though, it’s just not realistic for most people. Maybe when Trump gets in office and more American companies step up to the plate then maybe some of the prices will come down, we can all only hope.

US companies take IP seriously, which also means competitions can't easily copy each other and get these products out there and immediately get feedback, rapidly moving forward or driving price down. In China, that is just not a thing at all, which pushes them to develop way faster without all the rules in place, competitions drive down the price significantly.

Chinese thermal is just now catching up to US thermal. The reason you're just now seeing it is because the high resolution US made systems were $130k 25 years ago and were the size of a mini fridge. Lockheed Martin had high resolution thermal designed for aircraft going back to 1996. That stuff could see heat signatures from a literal mile away and distinguish what it was. All the Chinese have done is make it cheap, compact and mass produced. Which granted is a feat in its own right, but a far cry from them "dominating the market" Oh and the vast majority of cellphones are manufactured in china but developed elsewhere. Almost every piece of technology the Chinese have ever made was either stolen and reverse engineered or designed in another country entirely.
