The consonant cluster "kv" is non-existent in the English language, but quite common in northern Germanic languages like Swedish. Given that it's the same branch of languages, with a little practice logic dictates that we should be able to pronounce the sound fairly easily. This has been a short linguistics rant no one asked for or will ever read.

@@SuperCarlinBrothers really awesome insight on the books... So I don't know if you noticed that in book 1 when one of the INN patrons says he remembers Kvothe, Kvothe pretends to twist his knee while stepping off the fireplace and proceeds to tell everyone in the room that he took an arrow to the knee three summers ago while in the ELd... Of course we know in book 2 that the only person who took an arrow to the knee in the Eld was Cinder... I don't think this means anything to the story but it's interesting... Also Devan Lochees ( Chronicler ) last name sounds a lot like Lackless...

Small theory on the side: I suspect Kvothe did not only call Felurians real name but also Dennas. At the far end of wise man's fear he surprisingly meets Denna when she comes into a tavern with a guy friend and can't breathe. He whispered a name in her ear and told her to breathe. And she did. He thought he called the wind to make her breathe again but I suspect he called her by her true name and thereby had power over her so when he told her to breathe she had to comply. I'd really love a SCB video listing all the moments of Kvothe just naming things left and right and having no clue. He's a sweet sweet summer child ...so naive

@@julianciari8026 Why would Elodin assume it wasn't the wind. It's not like Denna is known to be a powerful Fae. Why is Kote so vague about it when he tells us? I think it could be because he called Denna's name, but then, maybe it really was the wind

What if Cinder actually can't do anything to Kvothe? Something I've noticed that I haven't seen anyone on youtube talk about yet are the times that Kvothe displays the imagery of the Amyr, specifically the Ciridae. The mark of the Ciridae, specifically, is a tattoo that looks like blood flowing down one arm and Kvothe does this I believe twice. The most impressive of which is when he's fighting the bandits in the forest. I think it was after using sympathy on the dead body to kill a bunch of them he has blood flowing down his arm with lightning flashing behind him and Martin (?) , who is the most religious of the group, sees him standing there and looks in disbelief. So either this is symbolic in Kvothe being a rival to the Chandrian the same way the Amyr are or, he is actually divinely protected and the Chandrian can't actually do anything to him directly

I think they may have initially assumed Kvothe had died, and I think they assumed this because they put a spell on him to "sleep". When they leave, Kvothe goes to sleep in his wagon until it burns down and is half alive for the next 3 years until Skarpi speaks his name. I don't remember the exact line, but Haliax says something about putting Kvothe to sleep, and then Kvothe doesn't use sympathy, or anything arcanum related until Skarpi, then he suddenly uses it again.

Let's talk about the subtleties, like when Kvothe is leaving the University and Elodin says that the stone bridge is a great place for naming because it is an edge. Later, martin says that they're off the edge of the map in the Eld and Kvothe calls down lightning. And how he must've called lightning and not made a galvanic binding because if he did the slippage would've killed him.

While also a believer in this theory, there is one thing that is sticking out that throws a wrench in the gears. The Cthaeh (who knows all, yada yada) specifically says that Kvothe has encountered Cinder only 2 times in his life and considers that "lucky". The only way around this is if the Cthaeh is really pushing semantics here and not counting him when he's "glamoured". Kinda like the theory of Kvothe's mother's identity saying his mother (I forget the name) was a trouper through and through, since that could've been her new identity, instead of her Lackless name Natalia. That's the main thing that really stymies this theory for me though.

the german version of name of the wind has a short but on the calender an dthe currency at the end a year is maded up of 8 months (Thaw, Equis, Solace, Lannis, Reaping, Fallow, Dearth) plus seven days of high mourning celebrationg the winter solstice at the end. Each month has four spans of 11 days each (Luten, Shuden, Theden, Feochen, Orden, Hepten, Chaen, Felling, Reaving, Cendling, Mourning). So one month is 44 days making his two month term 88 days translating to 12 weeks and 4 days in our calender. There is also some additional information: Chaen means seven and a span used to end on that seventh day the four added day have religious meaning which you can get from Trapis story in Chapter 23 Felling is the day on which Tehlu brought down Encanis Reaving on which he carried Encanis away Cendling on which the fire was lighted Mourning on which Tehlu was mourned on currency it says Cealdish currency is the most used because it is well regulated and doesn't have a lot of fakes due to international prosecution. The coins are Trapezoidal and therefore give a little bar when stacked. A shim is unofficial and can be made by anyone it's only worth what the iron they're made of is worth. Shims have an X on the side to distinguish them from Drabs. 1 Drab is 11-14 Shims after that every 10 make the next higher coin, the order being Shim, Drab, Jot, Talent, Mark. the currency of the commonwealth is a mess because every bigger city can coin their own coins and don't do it according to regulation therefore the uni uses Cealdish currency

I really love how all of this fits together, but there's actually prove in the books, sadly, that Cinder has just appeared as himself and as the Bandit Leader in front of Kvothe. The Cthaeh tells Kvothe that he encountered Cinder twice. And a Cthaeh never lies. Though admittedly, he phrased it vague, as a "twice in a lifetime chance". He also said that Kvothe was lucky to survive his first encounter because the Chandrian were sloppy. And what I think might even more interesting, he said that the Maer is close to the Amir but doesn't know it. So I counter suggest, what if Bredon is actually of the Amir?

I just got through the book and what sticks out to me is the moment when Kvothe tries to bring up Dena constantly changing her name with Master Elodin and Elodin nearly loses his hat over the very idea of anyone changing their true name before Kvothe can explain. More than anything this means its possible to change a name. I wonder if Cinder is looking to get Kvothe to help him change his name in a round-about way so that he may be free of Haliax (brings up the idea of whether he is trying to regain his original true name before he 'fell')

I heard your podcast the other day when you talk about someone telling you that you were late going into this fandom (that a really selfish comment) I read the book in 2016 and of all the theories that I've seen or read since then this one of the best! so who is laughing now! I think what you are doing is awesome opening this wonderful world to new people! i really appreciate it (i don't feel so lonely anymore! it's really difficult to convince someone to read a book this long) Peace!

I’m completely on board with Kvothe’s knack for naming, therefore connecting Master Ash with Cinder, but I feel like there is also merit to the theory of Bredon being Denna’s patron is of the Amyr. If this is so, then how do you connect “ash” with the Amyr? Cinder’s motivation for wanting Kvothe to name Haliax makes sense as well, but do we believe, then, that Cinder/Bredon just knows of Kvothe & Denna’s connection? Denna is very adamant that she has not told Master Ash about Kvothe. Kvothe is hers and she won’t share. This is why the series is so good! So many ways to interpret things.

The appendices in the back of the 10th anniversary edition of Name of the Wind explain all the major money systems and provide a calendar. Cealdish money (shims, drabs, jots, talents, and marks) is decimal, with the exception of there being 11 shims to a drab (10 drabs to a jot, 10 jots to a talent, and 10 talents to a mark). The other money systems (Vintish, Commonwealth, and Aturan) are a lot more complicated. There's no explanation of Modegan money except for a mention Kvothe makes right before he leaves Vintas that he somehow ended up with a single Modegan strehlaum.) The calendar is 8 months of 4 span (44 days) each in a year, with 7 days of High Mourning as leap days to keep the physical year and the calendar year in line.

Chapter 18 of Wiseman's fear where Denna talks about a magic that can make people believe whatever they're told. Kvothe says "Sounds like Fairytale magic". The chapter before, he says he is only able to find things on the Chandrian in Fairytale books. This is what has happened to Kvothe. He believes he is just an innkeeper. Denna begs her patron not to kill Kvothe and this is what happens

I also have a theory that Abenthy leaving the troop is in the same vein as Deanna being asked to go to that wedding. If you recall she was asked by Ash how many people were at the wedding, basically ensuring the Chandrian found them all. Abenthy heard the song the last night he was with the troop, and only left when he was perfectly baited by that woman. Lastly Ash perfectly showed up when Donna needed a patron. Thoughts?
@colinclark5435
@colinclark5435 Жыл бұрын
Ohh see I think Abenthy set the troop up. His note to Kvothe is a lot of foreshadowing, written in a book literally called “rhetoric and logic”and he disappeared right before the attack. He tells kvothe to go to the university, remember his fathers song, and beware folly (cinders sword) which kvothe now has hanging on a wall. I think Abenthy might be another chandrian or Amyr working against cinder.

YES I suspected Bredon was denna’s patron! Because in the wise mans fear bredon mentioned that he had even been dancing lately and then soon after Denna tells qvothe that her patron is a fair dancer! And I was like is it a coincidence? But now this video has me convinced it’s all the same guy it was Agatha- I mean it was Cinder all along~🎶 Also I have a feeling that old Ben is also cinder! I mean he just completely dropped out of the story, kinda sus if u ask me. Also it would be kinda perfect if cinder had been training him from the very beginning to take down heliax!

Ive been wondering about Abenthy, as well. Could he have started the beautiful game? Is he Cinder as well. The words "ashen" and "terrible" and "dispassionate", were used to describe him when Kvothe first called the wind and nearly died. Also wondering about the Tinker who met Kvothe on the road just outside Trebon. Why would he surrender a Lodenstone? And pay for the horse like that? Its too convenient. Cinder departing the scene. Arledin made reference to Lodenstones: he had seen one in Pelaresin. This mention is surely important. How could a Lodenstone just drop into Kvothe's hands like that???!!!!!

I think it's equally likely that Bredon is Master Ash, and that what the Cthaeh said was 100% true but super super misleading. It's entirely possible that Bredon was actually teaching Denna fighting techniques. Using his walking stick in a fight, and taking pleasure in helping her learn. I think Bredon being Cinder could be a red herring. Also, I think at least one of them is true.. Either Ash is Cinder OR Bredon is Cinder OR Ash is Bredon OR all of the above

In regards to Denna’s patron, Master Ash. I don’t think he’s Cinder. Now before I say any more, I’d like to direct you to where I first heard this theory, a video titled “Denna’s Patron” by Captured in Words that does a much better job of explaining all this than me. If Denna was being abused I think she’d run. Disappear. She’s good at that. What I think is going on is that Master Ash is beating her in sparring matches. Don’t forget that the Cthaeh, while only able to speak the truth, is still malevolent. It’s very likely that it’s phrasing the truth in a way that could far too easily be misinterpreted. He’s recently taken to using his walking stick as a weapon for sparring as she improves. We see that Denna can fight when she defends the girl in the alley, and this could be a result of her training with Master Ash. Why Denna is training to fight I don’t have time to say here, so go see the video I recommended. As a side note, I also believe that Master ash is Bredon, with his ash colours.

That wouldnt rule out Cinder as Master Ash though, he could just be less evil than he's made out to be. He would have no reason to hurt her, but the Cthaeh would definitely have a reason to set Kvothe on a path to kill Cinder and screw up CInder's plan to get rid of Haliax
