I’ve always been fascinated by the Adem, with their ancient swords and their red leather wearing mercenaries. But what if I told you their origin shares some things in common with the Amyr? And the Sithe also seem to be connected? It's theory time!

I think the Adem and the Sithe being connected are a definite possibility. I hadn’t considered the Amyr connection, but it does make sense! I first saw your kingkiller theory videos sometime last year, and since then have been rereading the books, slowly, taking notes all the time.

Great video again and some solid theories. Names in threes was an interesting take but do you ahave a counter theory that The Singers aren’t the Witches beyond the Stormwhal Mountains? I thought it rather interesting that the Cthaeth would mention them to Kvothe when telling him about seeking knowledge of The Amyr. But great video as always, you should really look into Witches in KKC. They are in the book and Pat has hid them pretty well.

If you’re right that kvoth is an amyr you may have accidentally confirmed that he is in fact a chandrian because of the 8th person on the vase at the wedding. If it’s true then that means he was pre ordained to be one.

I wrote a Reddit theory a couple years back that explains that Illien was an Adem musician, who traveled with his screen on his back. But as he traveled further, the screen became a tent that he would play inside of, still hiding him from his audience. Longer still it became a wagon and as he gained peers and followers, a new branch of the Adem was formed. If Adem means what most autonyms do, People or The People, then the Adem Latantha would be the people of the Sword Tree, and the traveling people, who follow the wind, would be the Adem Aeruh, or People of the Wind. Over time, as people joined Illien, the name and customs became corrupted into what are now known as the Edema Ruh. Bonus points, Illien, whose uncorrupted name was Yllien, ended his journey on an island in the south west, eventually founding the national of Yll

There is one thing that I've never seen anyone bring up. When Kvothe encounters the chandrian at the ruins of his troupe, Haliax says "who keeps you safe from..." and one of the things was the "singers". Fast forward to the Wise Man's fear when Kvothe has his magical battle with Felurian. Remember what he did? He sang 4 notes to dominate her. I've never seen anyone consider that possible connection.

I'm looking forward to hearing your interpretation of it after I read it on my own. Plus there's the stuff happening in the frame story. Here's a literal connection I was hoping you'd bring up: > “If you fight for the good of others?” > “An Amyr,” I said without thinking. > She cocked her head at me. “That is an interesting choice,” she said. > Vashet held up her arm, displaying the red sleeve proudly. “We Adem are paid to guard, to hunt, to protect. We fight for our land and our school and our reputations. And we fight for the Lethani. With the Lethani. In the Lethani. All of these things together. The Adem word for one who takes the red is Cethan.” She looked up at me. “And it is a very proud thing.”

Thanks for making this video. One thing I was always curious about is the idea of motherhood in the Adem culture - and why Rothfuss is mentioning the idea of children without fathers in his books. Maybe it gives a hint to the true origin of Kvothe and that he is the offspring of an unknown power. Even his father said (mostly as a joke) that his wife had a child with an angle, when they where discussing Kvothes talents with Abenthy at the fire. So maybe the real Amyr (the one Felurian is mentioning) are the reason for the fatherless children of Adem and could hint to the theory that Kvothe is one of them as well - through birth and not just through his actions. (Remember, when Kvothe passed the test he gets an Adem name and the actions of Tempi where right, because he brought back “a lost son”).

I'm going through just now my rereading of KKC, buy for what I remember I always had the impression that the Adem have common origin with the Edema Ruh. Adem and Ruach, sounds very similar to Edema Ruh, this always made me believing there was a connection between them. The Adem have been wandering the world before settling down, while the Edema Ruh kept wandering, becoming then the trouper we now know. Ruach could represent the common roots of both communities. Any thoughts?

The unspoken thing that Rothfuss wasn’t explaining is that the Sith from Star Wars and the Sithe from his books don’t have the same inspiration. The Sithe’s ACTUAL punctuation (which is an alternate spelling of the group of old Irish Gods you have a picture for in your video) is phonetically “shee.” As in bean-sithe or cait-sithe (woman fae and cat fae, respectively). Also- I never considered Haliax using Adem naming convention. That’s interesting (even though I’m overall mad Haliax is Bond villianing all the Chandrian weaknesses to Kvothe. In Aturan or all languages he probably knows). But since he seems to be speaking Aturan that’s a hard sell for me since he doesn’t do it for anything else. Unless Kvothe is sleeping-minding the Chandrian entire conversation. You’d just think Cinder would have more of a reaction to Kvothe responding to him if that was the case. Anyway, I digress. I also have some pretty solid evidence that Dulcen and Dalcenti of the Chandrian are one-in-the-same, and formerly of the Adem. But that’s a whole other thing. Nice video! Good material to discuss :)

I just so happen to be listening to the name of the wind right now and came to Skarpi’s story which is so much better than I remembered it. But in it, he describes Lanre almost exactly the way Kvothe was described when he was with the Adem and they said he has darkness in him, something the lethani cannot mend. Selitos saw in Lanre that he had a darkness that couldn’t be fixed after Lyra died. It lines up very nicely. So I think that lends tons of credence to the idea that the Amyr are the ancestors of the Adem, with kvothe being more closely related to Lanre/the Chandrian

Watching this video made me think about how the Adem "don't talk". Maybe it's too long of a stretch, but if the Adem are in fact descendants of the Amyr/Sithe/Singers, developing a sign language system just to avoid talking about the Chandrian looks like a for-the-greater-good thing to do. It also prevents the Adem from "naming", thus avoiding the use of the kind of magic that can tempt you to change the world, like the shappers did. These videos are the only thing quenching my thirst for KKC, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Always appreciate the great King Killer content. This theory seems sound to me, I'm intrigued by the future narrative implications. We know that the Scrael are crossing the Stormwal mountains, as we haven't yet been introduced to many locations in that region, this likely means whatever Rift has been opened is either close to Haert or the Tahlenwald. Will Kvothe find this connection between the Amyr and the Adem and use it to convince them to fight the Scrael? Check back in 2026 to find out 😁

Fully agree on the wordplay around mendicant - I did a re-read for a failed attempt at a kingkiller fan site several years back and really got into dissecting the little nuances of the story, the amount of time the word 'Folly' is used in text, especially where a different word fits better, definitely means it's a literary mechanic as well. Folly is, in my mind, definitely Kvothe's folly, in likely killing Cinder and claiming his blade, possibly, his curse. We know the sword in his bar isn't Caesura.

Here's something to look into: Denna's patron. Two options imo. He is either someone hunting chandrian (likely amyr) or, my personal favorite option, denna's patron is one of the chandrian. Decent amount of evidence for this like the context of Treban's attack (why he asked her to play the wedding, he told her to give him the names of who went to the wedding so that they could kill everyone who went). The song he asked her to write deflects the "truth" about Haliax's origin which is obviously a nice benefit to chandrian. And obviously the secrecy he holds. And the fact he abuses her. Either he isnt the most morally sound man, or he is a "greater good" fanatic. Plus the times when Kvothe randomly stumbles into denna are times when he encounters chandrian. (Cinder in severen on the mission for the mayor right after denna and kvothe get into that fight), and the Treban interaction after they stumble into each other

Another much simpler (and more likely) theory is that Kvothe's mom, Laurian, is meluan's sister. Early in the first book theres that wierd interaction with his mom and the children song he sings about lackless. Theres the fact kvothe recognized meluan's face, and theres the fact that we know his mom left a noble background for the edema ruh (leaving meluan bitter).

This would make "Ruach" "The Amyr, The Singers, The Sithe." with the Sithe being the first group that became angels (i.e. went to the fae realm to watch over the Ctheah, among other duties) the Amyr being the second group that swore to hunt the seven for what they had done (i.e. founded Ademre and did a lot of fighting) and the Singers the third group that went their own way (i.e. start the traditions of the Edema Ruh). If humans aren't descendants of Ruach though, the Edema would have much more human genetics than the Adem because of the millenia of mingling freely with humans and even accepting many into their family

I enjoyed the connections you described. I always pronounced the sithe as scythe. It is actually the old English version of the word. To me it fit perfectly with the group. They are the ultimate reapers of the Amyr. Tasked with destroying the skin walkers and be warden of the Ctheah. To the Adem the greater good seem to fit their philosophy perfectly. Truth is an individual construct, yet within a society, or religion these are combined and a higher agreed upon level of truth emerges. This is why they think upon the relationships between a personal truth and how it fits, or doesn’t with Lethani. The singers are definitely Edema Ruh. I think the Ademre do not like singing is because the Ruh continued searching and moving like the Amyr, while they finally settled in one place. There is an obvious break between two groups linked back to Myr Tariniel. One keeping true to the martial tradition and the greater good, while the other moving and searching who emphasize the singing/naming nature of the fallen city.

I do like the theory that the Adem are a split off faction of a people who are naturally predisposed towards working for the greater good. The Adem being one of several split factions after the fall of their people that spawned the Singers (and started as them), the Sithe (which I pronounce as seeth, 'cause I like the sound), and the Amyr. Specifically that bit about them having names in threes was very thought provoking for me, though I am not sure i would say that at present it is fair to say all are one. It's the best theory I've heard in a while though.

I had the exact same theory you do about the Edema Ruh being the same as the Adem just them having never stopped travelling. It sounds like they could descend from the Amyr possibly? Like the people received help from the amyr as they were trying to settle down

So much about each of the Adem, Sithe, Edema, Amyr are inconsistant. Some in ways that seem poetic, some in ways that seem chaotic. It's going to be interesting to see how it ties together. Adem don't ride, Sithe are The Riders, Edema Ruh are great riders and judges of horses, The Amyr are described as using horses Sithe seem to wake up and choose violence, The Amyr don't seem uncomfortable with or excited by it, Adem regard view killing as an unfortunate, Edema Ruh avoid confrontation Sithe are described as wearing white, Adem wearing read to hide blood or white because if they are good enough to avoid injuries... The Amyr seem to revel in the symbology of sacrifice The Adem have distinctive grey eyes, Edema Ruh eyes have a "Ruh Look" (Kvothe has that "Ruh Look" and his are fay looking green, color changing, ringed in gold... like his non Ruh born mothers?!?) Sithe seem to be a shaped (presumably "pure") race, Adem have a narrow gene pool, Edema are a culture not a race, Amyr may be an organization, people, culture or combination. Sithe use bows, Adem use swords, Edema Ruh don't have a associated weapon, The Amyr are unknown... Interestingly the Adem schools began with archery and didn't initially seem to value swordsmanship, yet have ancient swords they know the unbroken history of which seemingly predate their exile and origin...

I loved it as always, but how would we link this “first lineage” from which we can trace the Adem, Sithe and Singers with the concept of Shapers vs. Knowers?? I’d love to dig more into it.. Like at what point do Shapers become an enemy

I would like to point out that Ruh in Edema Ruh sound very much like Roux (French word for Readhair) and Edema and Adame are very similar. Rothfuss already reversed the ''A'' and ''E'' for Ferula and Ferule.

Is it possible that the cthaeh and the sword tree have some connections? They are strikingly similar in terms of appearance and aura, however they are complete opposites as well. Kept in perfect balance, as one resides in the fae realm, and the other in the mortal world? One stands for the good, brining peace and serenity to those around it, while the other brings destruction and despair? Curious if you ever thought about this.

Is there a video that talks about the parallels between the stories told by Trapis about Tehlu, and the one Skarpi tells about Lanre? I cant be the only one that sees this, but can’t find any analytical breakdown or comparison of the two.

Do you think, the adem train with the sword tree is symbolically connected to the sithe and the chtae? In the sense that the adem train to avoid the leaves and so the influence of the tree and the sithe avoid the influence of the cthae (a tree Thing)? Does my rambling make any sense?

I've been convinced ever since reading WMF the first time that the Adem and Edema Ruh were originally the same people before splitting into 2 factions. I wonder if Pat was influenced by WoT's Tuatha'an and Aiel. Never made a connection between the Adem and Amyr though.

The theory could be possible since the Adem seem to be inspired by the Aiel of WOT as you mentioned. How hard is it to believe he got inspired by WOT for the Race of Hard warriors with a detailed culture of their own that has a connection with other groups

I may be biased because I'm a lifetime practitioner in martial arts and combatives particularly Filipino Martial arts that focus on short swords. I almost wanted him to stay training longer. But the story needed to progress I do have a theory about the man mothers part. Like all this time and you don't get how babies work? Weird belief for such practical people unless they have fae origins, and don't really require men for children. Could be why they are even a matriarchy.

I really enjoy your videos on this series, well done. The part about not understanding how father's work was just odd - this was the Ademre, right? Surely they must have some woman in the tribe who isn't into guys and has not babies, then gets into guys and starts having them. Or some stranger with a different appearance shows up and out pops a baby that looks like him from the woman who likes him? Do they not have animals? Surely they must have figured out how it works for pigs, sheep, cows, dogs, cats, etc. I think most human cultures figured this stuff out millennia ago. I guess it's just flavor but it's weird that this is somehow harder to accept that all the magic....
