It depends on several factors such as your skin type, types of acne scars, the doctor's experience, your budget etc. Some scars respond better to TCA or CO2 only, whereas some stubborn scars may require a combination of both subcision followed by RF microneedling and CO2. Please speak with an experienced doctor who can identify your scar type and then plan a suitable treatment plan for you based on your budget.

I would wager that there are some things Pico just can't do. It will handle minor issues with the skin, but if you want the best results, the answer is CO2 laser. One main reason is that Pico just can't get as deep into the skin as an ablative laser like CO2.

I'm surprised that the downtime is only 5-7 days. Are you sure it's not longer than that? I had two TCA cross sessions, and after the second one, I had ugly red wounds for at least a month. Fortunately, I had been working from home at the time, so I didn't have to go out in public. I am planning to ask for vacation time so that I won't have to go to work in person after laser treatment for my acne scars. Is one week good enough? Or should I take off more time than that? I know you said 5-7 days, but that sounds too good to be true. I have rolling scars and hyperpigmentation, which my dermatologist said can be improved with lasers. But I'm sure that there's an ugly duckling phase where I will have to stay home after treatment and not go out in public.

I have an update. I had two procedures during the same appointment. I had v-beam and fraxel. I was able to return to work four days after my appointment. There was some slight redness, but after four days of recovery, it didn't look too severe.

I had never heard of v-beam, but the dermatologist said it helps with the red marks that are left when acne goes away, so I agreed to do it. The more painful one is fraxel, which helps with my rolling atrophic scars. But I think it is worth the pain and money if it makes the scars go away. I'm 38 now, but I haven't had severe acne since I was 18. The atrophic scars from a long time ago are severe and will not go away with topical products. Invasive procedures like lasers and TCA cross are necessary.

Lasers work by destroying your skin so that it can grow back better. If your skin is still sick from acne, you just end up adding more damage and inflammation to the skin. It’s like if you’re sick, you wouldn’t go to the gym, because same logic, you build muscles by tearing them down so that they can rebuild better.

Skin resurfacing and scar management is not a one-time treatment because the skin needs a few sessions of treatment and time to heal and stimulate collagen production. The reason why depressed scars form is because of the lack of collagen and elastin fibers under the skin. For most treatments to be effective, several sessions may be required depending on the severity of scars and how your skin responds. So this means that it may take about 4-5 sessions to see some improvement. There are also some treatments such as dermal fillers which can be used to fill up depression on the skin. In such cases, results can be seen after the treatment. However, the result is usually temporary. Depending on what treatment option the doctor recommends, it can range from $300 to $900 per session. It is important to talk to your doctor to discuss the outcome you want, the budget you may have and the time horizon you have in terms of the result you want to achieve. Hope that helps.
