The time has come to talk about the DVO Jade X coil shock and give a review! We have gotten a lot of questions on what our preferences are between coil and air shocks! Coil gives bikes an advantage on the downhill while air shocks offer easy tuneability and a bit more playful feeling on the trails! The DVO Jade X bridges the gap with being a coil shock with a lockout. But is coil better than air? Let's talk about it!

Dude, I filled my air shock and air forks with ganja smoke. You gotta try it man, so smooth and much groovier rebound. Getting it in there takes a little practice and my lips hurt for a little while but it climbs much better and descends just dreamy. Indica in the rear and Sativa up front seem to work well but still experimenting. Peace brah.

Nice review Mo. Thanks for taking the time to answer some of the questions a lot of us had on air vs. coil! Reaffirms the initial reasons I went with the Jade X on the AF. Looking forward to trying out the progressive spring! Sounds like the answer to the best of both worlds.

Thanks! That was about as clear as mud at night in a coal mine! I still have zero idea whether I should get the Ripmo AF with a coil and get a progressive spring or go for air. "It still keeps all the pop and playfulness of an air shock, but it doesn't feel as playful and poppy".

i had a Topaz 3 air on a shred dogg. the jade x is gonna be my first coil (for a propain tyee). oddly, both bikes have the same shock size, however the GG has 140 travel, and the Tyee is 160. the latter has a longer chainstay and is very progressive w/ the "pro10" suspension. im excited to try it out, when DVO does a custom build and sends it my way.

@@robbiemoody928 the boys at DVO set the HSC/custom tune for the Tyee and my rider weight.. and suggested a 450# spring. it's lively, has more "pop" than i expected, yet hugs the ruts and divets like a champ. could be my imagination, but the coil is faster thru berms. i like it a lot, so far. is it bike park season yet? :)

I am planning on getting the exact same set up with the Jade X. Looks like $100 well spent upgrade. The way I see it, there’s a reason why coil shocks are still used for racing in all vehicles instead of air shocks. Now, if there’s a magna-ride shock for bike would be epic!!

@Table_Topper_Tony

I love my Jade X Coil on my Ripmo AF. I am running a FOX 36 up front that compliments each other really well! I have a higher spring rate on mine that really helps it give that poppy feel on jumps with the rebound slowed down... it’s a dream! And to be honest, I ride my Jade X in the middle position on the lever, I RARELY ride it fully open and when I do, it’s only for the DH bike park days here in Colorado and I NEVER ride it fully stiff. I don’t need the stiffness because the bike already climbs really, really well! So the middle position does just fine! I hope this helps others if they are debating on upgrading to the coil 😊
@snowboardwa7560
@snowboardwa7560 4 жыл бұрын
Isn't your shock really loud in the middle setting? Don't know many people who use the setting because of that. Wondering if your use of a larger spring weight and closing the rebound makes it quieter. Interesting...
@Table_Topper_Tony
@Table_Topper_Tony 4 жыл бұрын
PNW Bike the squishyness is a tad bit loud and I contacted DVO myself to see if it was normal and if it needed a tune up or anything like that. They said that the middle position will give it a more squishy sound compared to having it fully open. They also mentioned that it was normal and that it “Rides beautifully but screams a little in delight.” But too be honest the sound doesn’t bother me, especially when riding. Once you start getting the tires rolling I basically forget all about it.

Anthony Gonzalez That guy is me! Tried bladder at 170 to 190 and no difference. Only quiet with rebound all the way closed. Can’t tell if it’s bad enough to have to send in though. Definitely seems like a range people have been experiencing for the shock noise.

You need the Lockout because you are using a too soft spring. At least the initial spring rate is too soft for your weight. At 200 lbs it should be around 500 lbs. I tried the progressive cane creek spring and the regular on the Af both 450 lbs starting spring rate. Both have 27% sag with my weight being around 80 kg and measured in a seated position with the dropper fully extended. The progressive spring felt too nervous for me. The original spring felt more in control and faster. Sorry for sounding offensive. I don't want to be rude.

Love your videos. And love that your are running the ambassador show for the Ripmo AF! They chose the right person! I'm also running the coil. The shop I bought my bike from set me up with the 600 pound compression shock. I weigh about 204 lbs. This is the first coil shock I've used, so I didn't really know what to think and just trusted the shop. Do you think that is a good setup for me?

I personally like to keep my coil open when climbing. The traction is better on more technical terrain, especially if you can stay seated. And when I do use the lockout at least 50% chance I forget to open it for the downhill :)

@@moandhannahtravel For a 200 lbs rider, would you say the linear 550 spring sits a bit higher with more mid stroke support / less pedal strike than the progressive 475-575 but the progressive one is more supple in the beginning with a bit more bottom out resist ? Now that it comes with an Onyx probably not. The 36 is lighter though. The X2 is almost 1/2 lb heavier than the Topaz. The Topaz is a great shock on this bike. Better than the DPX2 for sure. If I was going to carry 1/2 lb more than the Topaz, I'd just put a coil on it.

I love my Jade X / onyx SC combo, gives my bike that mini DH/ free ride feel that I want with my gravity fueled/ bike park style of riding while still giving me a climbable platform. I have this sus mounted on a Peregrine high pivot Pinion gear box frame. I agree that the climb/ compression switch works wonders, reduces pedal bob to almost zero. I would like to try their progressive rate spring at some point to help with big hits and flat landings. Got any DVO swag left? I would love to rep/ support this brand. Thanks for the great reviews and set up vids!
