I have a college degree and I’m grateful for the job flexibility it affords. I’d always recommend college provided you can avoid mountains of debt.

Education costs are out of control! Tons of trades jobs pay equal or better than white collar jobs. I wish I’d been counseled better in high school. You are taught that college is the only way when it simply isn’t true.

Another thing is most jobs nowadays want a college degree for normal jobs. It’s hard to get hired for normal jobs since they now require a college degree. It’s the new baseline

Yeah, employers want "entry-level" workers with a Bachelor's Degree, preferably bilingual, plus at least two years of experience.

Kevin, I somewhat disagree. While many positions do list a college degree as a qualification, many are also stating "or X years of experience." Mainstream and global companies are laxing their requirements for degrees and opting instead for competency based skills instead. I am not doubting your personal experience, just the generalization stated. Companies can provide education and training. They can help a person to have the knowledge or skill set to do the job. What a company cannot do is make a person play nice in the sandbox with the rest of the team, make a person nice, or make them fit their company culture. Good HR offices and recruiters, who hire well, will opt to hire a less qualified candidate who is a better team/organizational fit.

I think the answer to question if college is worth it depends. It depends what you want to do. I do think most good jobs need some kind of training after high school, not necessarily college. Also, it is not binary. You can also choose to go to college later on in life, but I wouldn't go to these expensive colleges, you can get an equivalent education at cheaper school that's accredited. By the way I went to college, and training that would be considered a trade school. You have to pick your major carefully if you have to take out loans, make sure the ROI is worth it.

Only if you’re going for something you can’t KZbin/ LinkedIn learning your way into the field. So becoming an educator, engineer, or medical field. Anything else .. then no

Engineering is turning away from college too. You can teach yourself how to be an engineer on Udemy and other learning platforms (it will take longer and you will have to make connections to get in)

You say this, but if you research open positions with requests for degrees you see an increase in requests for degrees. I dont mean just big cities, I mean in average rural cities.

Shawna, I hear what you are saying, and would add this -- often a BS/BA is listed as a qualification, however, it is not a non negotiable for many careers. Ernst & Young has changed its view point on requiring a college degree. Women are also less likely to apply for positions in which they do not feel qualified for, while men will. As a result, men get the position. I am not a "feminist," however, I am an advocate for women to boldly and courageously go after what they are called to.

Trades give you a much better ROI. Look on indeed and see what trade jobs pay compared to jobs that required a Bachelors plus x amt of experience. Unless you have the personality to be a manager, trades are the way to go. Also it’s not about how much you make, it’s about living below your means. I know several people who made less than $30k a year who became millionaires by living frugal lives.

You got me Ken! I paid 25k for my automotive trade school I did 10 years in the field .. I always remember my peers saying they paid half that price! And now it’s at 39k and pay has not aggressively increased in that field 😱

I’m thankful I use my degree every week as a pastor. I went to Bible college at Moody and received my BA in Bible and Applied Linguistics. That degree helped me serve as an associate pastor while for money I work as a developer (currently in training, paid by work while paying me to learn). Get this: the field of IT doesn’t NEED a degree. Just work hard. I got in because I took a Udemy course in Python and proved to my employer that I can learn to code. Because of that, I’m being paid to learn C# back end and in a few weeks will be learning front end coding.

@Ken. As an adjunct professor, I must agree with you. I am teaching courses with a curriculum that is outdated by at least a decade and asked to prioritize teaching theories with no practical application. Students leave with no marketable skills and are only good at one skill; taking tests. I started realising this when I graduated with a Masters started working. I was trained by someone who only had a High School Diploma when I should have been the 'expert' with my fancy degree.

I've been contemplating an MBA....but for a job I could already get so 🤷🏻‍♂️ idk. I would just be "more qualified"
@zachdarr7605

I'm an industrial maintenance technician, to get into the first line of managment you just "need a BS" or to have been here 2 years. I bet I could negotiate for more if I had the MBA, but do I spend 30k to make an extra 10k? I'm not 100% sure what the salary range is for the role as it is but the rumor is 100k. My role now is 28-35/hr which with OT and bonus means you can make 75-80
@sidebott
@sidebott 3 жыл бұрын
Zach, if it would cause you to go into debt, reconsider the MBA. A great scenario would be if your company would provide tuition reimbursement or compensation to earn that degree. Do your due diligence and research career growth for your field, and programs that have affordable options. There are other ways to distinguish yourself than just adding an MBA to your resume credentials.

You said that it doesn't make sense that wages don't increase if the amount of people getting degrees does; but without any research or further thought I think it could because if there are more people that get better, then the competition is greater so maybe their wages don't increase but the average wages of a person who didn't study probably do decrease or maybe it simply more difficult to get a job for those who didn't study. Just common sense. However I do agree that many careers and degrees are worthless because they lack practical knowledge

It is pretty easy for a white male to say they are not getting a degree because he doesn't need it and doesn't care what anyone thinks about him, when he is riding with the winds of white privilege (may not be considerate of target audience of BIPOC who may have been groomed to understand or believe that they need to do a little more in order for a chance at equity). I love Ken Coleman, agree w most of the messages and I even have my youngest making this decision now, but I have mixed feelings on a couple of things. That said, this generation has an opportunity here. Debt is the worst enemy.

Rod, thank you for your thoughtful response, and it gives me pause to consider. I have a decision making document that might be helpful to your son as he considers his options. Feel free to reach out to me on LI and I will send it to you. One thing that is hopeful is that individuals of color are really beginning to establish generational wealth. That is something generations past did not have. May you and your family find great favor and your legacy be multiplied.
