FYI. For the day I visited Costco USA and Costco Canada, the exchange rate was $1.00 CAD = $0.75 USD

It’s well known that Canada has highly protectionist trade policies which keep prices higher for dairy & poultry. It’s not Costco’s pricing that’s at fault, these products almost always cost significantly more in Canada. And Costco uses rotisserie chickens as a loss leader to get people in the store where they’ll hopefully buy more stuff while they’re there. That’s why they cost less than the uncooked chicken.

Thanks for the insight, all interesting facts to know for sure. Probably explains why the other food categories were somewhat closer in price. Thanks for watching 👍🏾

A few of the products compared in this video are organic in the USA and not organic in Canada. This represent an even better deal on US products. E.G. The Greek Yogurt, Broccoli but I think a lot of us cross border shop for the incredible variety of goods and not strictly for the price of staple products

Very good point! The variety is definitely larger in the United States.

Costco has trouble keeping up with cheap produce prices in Canada in areas with a strong farmers market culture. Costco can't keep up in Kitchener/Waterloo produce prices. In June half the produce is twice the price at costco compared to the farmers market. I think that is one of the main reasons prices are lower in Canada on veggies , Milk and chicken prices are controlled by the farmers quota system where the government keeps the prices high and makes it hard for young farmers to start.

Interesting video. Canadian Costco's should also have a Canadian flag in the parking lot! Costco US has so much more variety :(. Do you have any knowledge on what the time lag is, on when a certain product will hit Canadian Costco after it hits the US stores? Do they even sell Kirkland butter in Canada? or any butter in multi pack?
@travels_wright

I totally agree with you. When it comes to clothing, certain snacks and beverages? Costco USA had a bit more, but surprisingly, a lot was quite similar. Some food items do not make it to Canada because of stricter protocols for food items like dairy and meats amongst other items. I could definitely use their cheaper gas at this point 😅. Thanks for watching !

Haha! I get it .. butter makes everything taste good. Essential in baking too! I don’t think we have Kirkland brand butter… at least not here in Quebec. I only saw the Naturel brand. Like you said, the prices at Costco for butter is hard to beat !!

So the final Canadian total is less if you count the exchange rate?
@travels_wright

In this case, On a per unit basis, it was actually cheaper in the US. But.. because the quantities sold in the US was larger than in Canada, the total bill came out to be more in the US because you would be buying larger packages. 👍🏾

Good video but with one Huge Flaw. Quebec is not Canada. Quebec is the furthest thing from being considered Canada. That "province" (more like it's own country) shouldn't be compared as Canada.
@travels_wright
@travels_wright 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching ! And I totally agree with you that Quebec is a different province culturally from the rest of Canada , however, my thinking was to try to eliminate any differences where possible, thus using the same store, same products where possible as well as using currency conversion. I also went as far as to not using the respective tax rates for the state and province. Using a Costco say in British Columbia and comparing its prices to one in say Texas would still have the said differences, but you’d still have to pick a province or state to do the comparison. Was the experiment 100% perfect, probably not but I’m sure it’s close enough to be meaningful. Let me know what you think !

@@travels_wright Dairy prices in Quebec and Atlantic Canada are much higher then the rest of the country. So I wouldn't say that Dairy products in general are cheaper in the USA then Canada. Quebec yes indeed. I think a much better comparison would have been an Ontario Costco VS a New York State Costco.

Besides cheese curds, vol-au-vent pastry shell, cold pizza and a couple of local brands (especially in the milk section), I didn't notice a lot of differences between grocery stores in Quebec and in Ontario...
